Associated Press reports on May 11 describes German efforts on the Meuse west bank near Vaux and northwest of Vaux repelled by French counter attacks near Dead Man's Hill. Heavy artillery drives and eastern front gains at Selburg accompany turmoil in Albania and Ireland.
Taliaferro and Armstrong on behalf of H. and T. C. Railway file damages and injunction suit in District Clerk J. W. Barron’s office against the City of Bryan and Aldermen Tyler Haswell John Vick J. B. Doane and former Alderman Sam B. Wilson. The case seeks 5000 in damages and to restrain city interference as the railroad seeks to restore the track infrastructure after the city moved a switch to permit intersection paving on Main and Fannin Streets. Judge J. C. Scott will hear the matter June 7.
In Saratoga Springs on May 16 the Methodist general conference almost unanimously endorsed unification of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The plan paves the way for final action by the Southern conference in 1918 and by the Northern conference in 1920.
London reports a net gain of 24.25 million dollars from seizure of enemy ships and cargoes in the war’s final twenty months. The prize court has disposed of 157 ships, with proceeds totaling 34.25 million, plus 1.674 million in interest. More than 1000 prize writs have been issued. Seized contraband spans windmills tombstones human hair and even animals bound for the Berlin Zoo.
W F Massey reports in the Progressive Farmer on melon culture in sandy soils. Practices include Dec or Jan land preparation, 8 by 8 foot checks, manure in each check, spring rotting, planting on hills, thinning to two plants, and nitrate around hills. No pruning is advised. if no manure is available use wood mold with cotton seed meal and acid phosphate in the hill.
Messrs A M and J A Vance of Kaw Paving Company Topeka arrived to supervise. They expect work to begin within ten days once preliminaries are settled. Thirty cars of material are in town with more en route, mixing machines have left Taylor and should arrive this week. The Vances, state manager and site supervisor, stay at Hotel Bryan.

In Pensacola on May 17 J J Diaz owner and captain and H B Snell master of the schooner Lucy H pleaded guilty in Federal Court to violating U S neutrality laws by landing a Villa expedition on the Mexican coast Diaz was fined 200 dollars and Snell 50 dollars
Texas employs 4408 people in printing and publishing with a 9.13 million dollar capital base across 1067 establishments. Texas ranks second in number of newspapers. the Houston Telegraph, founded by Gai Borden in 1836, is defunct. The Galveston News, established 1843, is the oldest. Texas publishes 57 foreign titles and total combined circulation is five million per issue.
Washington reports three Americans were aboard the Canadian steamer Bretria when it was sunk Friday most likely by a mine. Consul Skinner in London notes Lloyds says torpedoed. crew unharmed alongside details of the incident.
AP dispatch says the Dutch steamer Batavier the Fifth was torpedoed in the North Sea. Four crew members were lost while the rest landed at Great Yarmouth.
Quincy mass May 16 Associated Press reports Submarine L Eleven the last of seven of its class was launched today. The 170 foot vessel ranks among the largest underwater boats in the navy.
London officials announced that Sir Roger Camment and Bailey were committed for trial on a high treason charge. The same report notes Luigi Marcini, an American, drowned when the Batavier V was torpedoed.
Washington May 16 The revised figures of the army reorganization bill show the peace strength to be 211000. The war staff troops added brings the maximum to 261500.
United States soldiers rescue American J Deemer and his cook Monroe Payne from a Mexican village 125 miles into Mexico after a Glenn Springs raid. The men were taken back to the United States and said to have been killed for supplying the U S troops. General Funston reported Major Langhorne's force found them at El Pino 90 miles south of Boquillas with no resistance and continued pursuit of the bandits.

On May 17 in Austin Texas the University of Texas Longhorns defeated Texas A M 11 to 8 to clinch the state intercollegiate championship. Olson steadied Texas after A M threats, Ezell homered, Williams triple and single, Keltner added three singles, and Sellars Thomas started strong before weakness in the sixth due to illness. Rigney and Russell led A M with two hits each.
Ned Gould known as Uncle Ned died early Tuesday in Millican Texas. A very old man, he was brought from Virginia by Judge Woods with several others who have since died. His age reached 106 miles according to local claim.
San Antonio reports Col. Sibley with the Boquilla expedition lies 40 miles south of the border in headquarters formation. No new news on his operations is available.
J C Jarrett of Ste gall and Jarrett from Waxahachie and Temple arrives to supervise curb and gutter work for the residence district paving. He says machines are en route to Bryan and local labor will be used, with a large crew to accelerate progress. The firm has past experience in Taylor Temple Waxahachie Terrell and other cities. Work to start once arrangements are finalized.
The Texas pardon board refused to commute the death sentences of Jose Chapa and Malquiadea Buenrostro, Mexican raiders. They must hang Friday unless Governor Ferguson intervenes.
