At College Avenue Baptist Church Men’s Bible Class a six month term began with William Griffin elected president and Elmer Dodson, Horace Jones, Louis Merka as vice presidents. Dr R J Hunnicutt of this city and John Phillips of Navasota were moved to Houston by Federal Narcotic Officer McCullough and Deputy U S Marshal Hudson Myers after arrest on a narcotic charge. Phillips was jailed in Bryan after being brought from Navasota. Hunnicutt was taken into custody just before departure and was not jailed locally.
The charter night for the Isaak Walton League of America Bryan Chapter is delayed from May 6. A May 17 meeting is planned with Judge Escor Floyd president of the Texas State Chapter expected to preside. Further details on visiting state officials will be announced soon.
Funeral services for Paul Merka of Benchley were conducted at the McCulloch Gordon chapel at 2 30 on Sunday. Father J B Gleissner officiated with a mixed sextet from St. Joseph's Catholic Church singing God of My Heart and Nearer My God to Thee. The sextet members were Christine Stasney Lucile Rosprim Frances Boriskie Mary Vitopil Tom Daly and John O Connor. The large funeral procession then went to Smetana for a grave service and burial beside his wife who died in fall 1924. Pallbearers were Gus Bade Mat Vitopil John A Boriskie Frank Braczyk Tom Daily and John O Connor.
I M Free of Prospect Community visited the Eagle office Monday with an onion from the Free garden. The flat top onion measured 16 1 2 inches in circumference, similar in size to others brought in previously. Rev L D Poole accompanied him. they are tenants on County Superintendent D J McDonald's farm.
A dance is planned at Kurten Hall on Monday night May 10. Everyone is invited to attend.
A contract has been let to W. A. Boyett to repair the bad road area near Democrat Crossing on the Madisonville road in Grimes County. Construction costs are described as a few hundred dollars as the road has been impassible since heavy rains and the Navasot river flood.
Millican High School's Senior Class presented their annual play Friday night in the school auditorium. Admission was 10 cents for adults, bringing in funds to cover play books and diploma costs. Miss Erin Simpson led the production and attendees called it a complete success.
Elsie McElroy of Bryan High School won first place in the State Clothing Contest at Beaumont. Gladys Vance took third, and Bryan School earned a silver vegetable dish as the team medal. More than 500 Texas girls entered the event.
Interest rises as the Firemen's Carnival comes to Bryan on May 13 and 14. The May Queen voting closes May 12 at 6 PM with ballots in boxes. Tickets for voters are available from Mrs. C A Searcy. S M Bird oversees entertainment including a minstrel show and burlesque acts featuring local businessmen.
The marriage of Miss Billie Fuller of Bryan and J S Cole of Dallas was held Friday April 30 at 6 pm in the First Christian Church parsonage. Rev L Guy Ament officiated. The bride, daughter of Mrs Susie Fuller, will reside in Dallas after June. the groom is a Texas A and M senior and will graduate in June.
Nora Barnhart Fermier of College Station Texas won the $25 special prize for White Birches in the Houston Post-Dispatch poetry contest open to prior prize winners. Fermier previously won the weekly first prize and is described as a committed poet with several published works.
At the First Baptist church in Bryan on May 2 a large crowd attended services. Thirteen men were ordained as deacons after morning sermons and an afternoon mass meeting featuring M. H. Wolf. Rev. R. E Day presided and Dr. Albert Venting spoke on deacon characteristics.
M B Easters of Kurten visited Bryan today as a guest or observer, according to local social notes.
