Paris and other cities report a failed May Day general strike with radicals signaling, police clashing with protesters in red belt areas around Paris, Marseille, and Toulon. Commerce largely continues as 10,000 troops stand by and mobile guards patrol strategic locations.
A. W. Kinnard discusses the home market as the trade zone for commodities produced within a political unit. He cautions against broad international framing and suggests narrowing the term to the immediate trade territory involved in the production discussed, warning against revolutionary implications.
Mr and Mrs Drummond Martin and their little daughter plan to move from Bryan to Taylor after Mr Martin accepts a position with a printing establishment there. Mrs Martin and child will join him soon, leaving Bryan residents to wish them success in their new home. Mrs Lillian Dyer departs tonight for Roanoke Virginia to visit daughter Miss Louise Dyer and sister in law Miss Louise A Dyer.
City commissioners opened four bids for a new water filtration system on Monday night. One bid was disqualified for lack of a supporting check, leaving three bids to be reviewed by a committee including Forrest Jones, S. Johnson, F. L. Henderson, and R. G. Williams. A petition to annex Dellwood on College Road was presented for first reading.
Brazos county commissioners court members plan to attend the East Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association convention on May 4 and 5 in Paris. Judge A S McSwain serves as secretary treasurer and Guy F Boyett is a former vice president.
Mrs J J Brock relief administrator reports that funds have been arranged to pay teachers who ran domestic science classes for relief families and teach adult illiterates for the last four weeks. After a temporary cut, teachers were told to continue in the belief funds would be provided, and the telegram indicates relief headquarters have resolved the issue.
Bullets fired from rooms into ranks of thousands of marching Communists killed a man and wounded six others including a policeman and a soldier in Havana on May 14.
Ray Jack Neeley, arrested in Houston and brought here in connection with the Gordon Sewell warehouse burglary, posted a $500 bond on Monday and was released to return for examining trial on May 7.
Funeral services for the late T Flavius Thompson were held Tuesday at Steep Hollow church after his death Monday morning at 11 20 at his son A C Thompson's home. He had lived in Brazos county for over sixty years and leaves four sons Louis Ernest A C Thompson and others. burial in Steep Hollow cemetery with pallbearers named.
The Bryan and Brazos County Good Cheer Association will pay for incidental costs of free hot lunches for school children white and negro on relief rolls from now until the end of May. The board met Friday to decide funding after relief funds ended. A committee was named to consider providing a wooden leg for a negro citizen.
Dr. William H. Welch, 84, dean of American scientific medicine and one of Johns Hopkins Medical School’s original faculty, died last night. Born April 8, 1850 in Norfolk, Connecticut, he studied at Yale, then earned a medical degree in New York and studied in European universities. He helped pioneer pathology and taught the new science after returning from Europe.
J. B. Ransom and Willie John son, both described as negroes, were jailed Friday morning on charges of stealing a sack of sugar from Humpty Dumpty grocery. Police seek others charged with stealing money from the store’s soda machine.
Brazos county youth Norton R. Burkhalter, who lost his left arm in a Jan 27 auto and truck collision on the highway south of Bryan, has sued Dallas truck operators C. T. English et al for $65,000. Burkhalter, represented by Fulbright Crocker and Freeman, alleges his car was demolished when the truck struck it as he drove toward Bryan.
The College Avenue Baptist Sunday School again topped its attendance record with 546 present, surpassing the previous high of 484 set in 1932. On Sunday April 22, 508 attended, and the following Sunday surpassed that by 38 attendees.
Floyd Allen four month old child of Mr and Mrs G H Brown of Victor died Monday from strangulation after falling from bed and becoming caught between the mattress and bed frame. Victor is a town six miles east of Beaumont.
County Agent C L Benson relayed via wire from Senator Tom Connally that the federal emergency crop loan deadline is moved to May 15, extending from April 30. The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce had urged a 15 day extension.
Lucille Knox a former negro elementary school teacher in Bryan is dead and her husband John Knox is jailed in Hempstead county jail. Reports say Knox killed his wife who had gone to Prairie View to live with her parents and prepare for teaching. It is also reported Knox wounded a Hempstead negro teacher in critical condition. Knox was a well known Bryan figure, previously employed by W. H. Oliver and recently at Webb Bros. store.
Layton Gregg and Moselle Mc Lain obtained a marriage license from County Clerk Clyde Goen on Saturday night.

Mr and Mrs James Wilson and daughter Miss Mary Ida Wilson will depart Wednesday morning for Lovell Kansas to attend a family reunion marking the fiftieth wedding anniversary of his brother A S Wilson. Eleven Wilson children were born. ten survive. Eight or nine are expected to attend at their brother s home in Lowell on his golden anniversary Friday May 4. Attendees include relatives from Iowa Texas Kansas and Illinois. One sister, a China missionary, cannot attend. Mr Wilson has lived in Edge since 1871, having moved from Illinois that year to live with his uncle James Wilson. They will be away ten days.
Roy Jack Neeley, one of three men wanted for the Gordon Sewell warehouse burglary, was held in Houston and brought back by Sheriff J H Reed and Constable Horace Reed. Authorities expect the other suspects to be captured soon.
After May 1 1934 all purchasers of cotton garments should look for the NRA label before buying. The labels will be furnished only to manufacturers complying with their NRA code. All cotton garment manufacturers must attach the NRA label to each garment if they comply. If not complying they may not use the label.
John J. Stasny of the Bryan Fire Department becomes Brazos County’s first ex serviceman to receive the Texas Service Medal through the local Red Cross. The bronze medal bears the Alamo and Texas seal, with a silver star denoting service. Stasny enlisted March 8 1918 at Bryan, served in F Company 19th Infantry then 85th Infantry, discharged February 3 1919 at Camp Travis.
Major General Hugh L. Scott retired longtime Indian fighter and former Army chief of staff died Monday night at Walter Reed Hospital after an illness of two months. He was 80. A West Point graduate of 1876, he served from Sioux campaigns to lead the staff in World War I, shaping American participation in the conflict.
Mrs Charles N Shepardson of the First Christian church delivered the main address on Religion in Russia at the Bryan Federation of Church Societies gathering at the Christian church. The program was led by Mrs E S Bledsoe with devotional, and Mrs D S Buchanan sang with piano accompaniment by Mrs E W Glenn. Federation president Mrs R H Bush conducted the business session and plans for the Daily Vacation Bible School in June were advanced, to be held again at College Avenue Baptist church.
May 1 Tokyo reports that Cordell Hull’s communication on Japan policy was ignored in a foreign office communique to Japanese papers. The statement was published in full in afternoon editions. The reply reviews lines by Hirota Grew and Lindley and seems timed to imply Tokyo held the last word in recent exchanges.
United States rejects Japan's claim to exercise Monroe doctrine rights in China. Secretary Cordell Hull says he instructed ambassador Joseph C. Grew to inform Tokyo that US treaty obligations and expectations care on China. The message, delivered by Grew, arrives as Britain notes the incident is virtually closed.
Washington May 1 The house post office committee voted to reject the senate approved air mail bill and push its own measure. Both bills would let the postmaster general award one year contracts but differ in several details.
