Benchley News Highlights Local Visits and Flood Rescue

Community notes from Benchley report visitors from Hearne Bellaire and Calvert. A heavy rain swelled creeks causing an accident when a wagon and team were swept downstream near Benchley. nearby residents assisted in rescue and recovery.

Death in Kurten Community Prompts Funeral Services

On April 28 Oscar Stroppe died after a several day pneumonia illness. The funeral was held Tuesday at Kurten Cemetery with a large Evangelical church turnout. Rev J J Kasiskie pastors the church. Attendees from Bryan included Rev J J Pipkin and family, A S Mc Swain and wife with child, and Lida Belle Pipkin. John Utsey family moved from Reliance to Kurten for their future home.

Judges Rule Automobile Ownership Not Disqualifying

In Austin on April 30 the Texas Supreme Court held that Tenth Court of Civil Appeals judges in Waco are not disqualified from hearing highway injunction suits involving Limestone and Hamilton counties because they own automobiles. Chief Justice Cureton authored the opinion, and the court ordered the cases to proceed.

Windshield shard wounds Mrs Dimarra in West 28th Street crash

Mrs Mary Dimarra required three stitches after a piece of windshield glass penetrated her jaw during a collision on West 28th Street. The crash involved a car driven by her daughter Santa Dimarra and another driven by two girls. Dimarra was treated and to remain with her son-in-law Frank Cantivespi near Bryan Hospital until tonight or tomorrow. The Dimarra car also suffered a twisted radius rod. the other vehicle had minor damage.

Former Tabor resident brought to Bryan Hospital by car

Co. B. Frances, Goose Creek market proprietor, arrived in Bryan at 5 this morning by car for treatment at Bryan Hospital. He suffers serious complications from pneumonia but withstood the trip. He is Jim Frances of Tabor’s brother and son of Mrs. Jim Frances, Sr., of that community.

A complaint was filed this morning against Ruth Barber, described as a negress, charging her with disturbing the peace per County Attorney Oak McKenzie.

Bry an Music Study Club Sponsors Free May Recital

The Bry an Music Study Club will host a complimentary public recital May 10 at the Carnegie Library auditorium with artist singer from Dallas. Net proceeds from a St Louis Symphony Orchestra production amounted to 116 dollars, and the club plans to join the Fourth District Federation of Women's Clubs with summer executive actions to be handled by the committee.

The Bryan district seeks to absorb greater territory to fund a nine month school term for transferred rural pupils. County data show 169 pupils cross transfers cost Bryan about 2000 dollars in state funds, with potential total costs near 6000 dollars for added teachers. Rural high school to split four grades at satellite sites

The district plans to form separate schools for the first four grades at Wellborn Shirock and Union Hill due to space and funding limits. Starting with 275 pupils the rural high school now serves 400 and needs a cheaper solution than expanding the main facility. Public meetings are scheduled including another session at Rock Prairie to inform patrons.

Record Rainfall in Bryan and Vicinity

A thunderstorm and heavy rain began in the early morning and continued with little abatement. By 9 am 1.68 inches had fallen and 2.78 inches total by 1 pm after 1.10 more inches were logged by the government gauge. Streets, pedestrians, and stalled cars suffered minor damage while the electric line and paper office faced outages. No further local damage reported today.

Presbyterian Class Enjoyed Picnic at Woodville Friday

The boys' class of First Presbyterian Church of Bryan led by John H. Carmichael with invited girl friends and chaperones Miss Malcolm McInnis and Margaret Stevens met Friday at 6 PM and drove to the Woodville schoolhouse site. They spread a basket lunch, played a few games, then returned home due to threatening skies. Supreme Court reverses Dansby fire policy ruling

The Texas Supreme Court reversed a Brazos county ruling awarding M F Dansby $5 000 from National Liberty Insurance on a total loss fire claim. It sent the case back for another trial to decide if the concrete foundation and steps are a substantial part of the structure and thus a basis for restoration.

D. J. McDonald's Son Named East Bernard Superintendent

Prof. L. C. McDonald, son of County Superintendent D. J. McDonald, was elected superintendent of East Bernard schools for two years with a notable salary increase. Churches to Form Ten Boy Scout Troops in Bryan

A Bryan council meeting chaired by T A Adams decided to organize ten Boy Scout troops via churches not on denominational lines. The plan calls for 32 boys per troop with a sponsor from each church and pulpit talks to recruit leaders and members.
