A. W. Kinnard Jr notes President Roosevelt urges educators to seek truth and discuss social trends in science and economy. He reflects on academic freedom and the duty to inform the public to adapt government practices swiftly, as discussed at the National Education Association convention.
Mr and Mrs Marshal Bullock and several Bryan residents joined the large turnout for the Centennial celebration at Old Washington on Monday. Newton Long and two daughters of Houston returned home after visiting Bryant friends. Mrs A B Sellars will depart Wednesday for Cameron Mo after nursing her ill daughter in law.
Funeral services were held at 3 30 o clock Saturday for Gilbert Edward Loew at the home of his father in law W O Sanders. Dr W H Andrew officiated and led the Masonic service at Bryan City cemetery where interment was made. Loew died at Aransas Pass Thursday morning and his remains were brought to Bryan Friday by the Southern Pacific Sunbeam. He was born in Milwaukee April 14 1904 and was in his last year at the time of death. He is survived by his widow Sue Sanders Loew married here Sept 16 1934 and her father W O Sanders. Also survived by his parents E J Loew and a sister Mrs Ernst Fuchs Jr of Beaumont and grandparents Mr and Mrs Edward Loew of Milwaukee. Loew was a Beaumont High School and Texas A M College Civil Engineering graduate and held a Master’s degree. he served in the U S Army Engineers Reserve. The maximum temperature reached 80 degrees on Tuesday and the minimum 40 degrees on Thursday. A total of 0.42 inches of rain fell during the week at the Experiment Station at A and M College. Temperatures were:
A Rural Electrification Administration team led by W O Coe starts a county wide survey in Brazos with Burleson and Robertson to count definite subscribers and gauge potential customers. The effort maps farms and businesses, marking subscribers and prospects to prepare data for REA submission. weather may affect progress. Multiple areas to be surveyed as conditions permit.
Supt. S. M. Brown of Bryan reports from the National Education Association meeting in St. Louis where at least 15 000 attendees heard talks on adapting schools to changing conditions. An exhibit featured more than 250 companies supplying textbooks and school supplies, and J. C. Cochran of San Antonio was elected to the NEA board. The department is led by a five member board with yearly terms and a rotating president.
Warren Thurman died Friday evening at Wilkerson Memorial Clinic at age 41. He was born June 7 1804 in Edge Brazos county. Coroner ruled death natural causes. Survived by father H R Thurman two sons five daughters. Funeral Saturday at 4 from McCulloch Dansby chapel with Rev W B Breazeale. Burial at New Church cemetery.
A Wednesday start is planned for the Ursuline avenue sewer project approved by the Works Progress Administration. The eastern area will gain a pump lift system to the disposal tank, at an estimated cost of 8452.45 with the city's share about 1600 plus supervising expenses. About 50 men will be employed.
Deputy Game Warden Sam Cavitt reports new deer and wild turkeys received for stocking in Leon County near the Navasota River. The deer total reaches 48 and the turkeys 72, more than usual for a single area, with more shipments expected soon and spread to Brazos Madison and Robertson counties.
Milton Maloney authored the centennial playlet God Looks on Texas performed by the First Baptist Young People's Department to strong showings last Sunday. It will be staged at 6 30 p m next Sunday by the First Methodist church with cast members Milton Maloney W S Johnson Frances Branch E C Dyer Dorothy Hostetter and Bruce Phenix invited by the Methodist department to repeat the presentation.
Hl. O. Ferguson proprietor of Stephen Ice and Bottling Co. with Roy Watson and Carrol Machos left Sunday for Atlanta to attend Coca Cola Company’s Golden Jubilee marking its fiftieth anniversary. They plan to visit various South sites before returning to Bryan.
M. 8. Mack Robinson longtime Hempstead merchant died Monday night at about age 70. Funeral services set for Wednesday at 10 am in Hempstead with interment there. Survived by wife and two daughters Mrs. William Meikow of Columbus and Mrs. John C. Abney of Lampasas. Brother Henry Robinson of Kerrville helped establish Bryan’s telephone system. Niece Alma Robinson of Bryan was in Hempstead today.
President Roosevelt sent Maggie P. Rhew’s name to the senate for confirmation as postmaster at Anderson in Grimes County. The county lies in the Nat Patton district, Crockett, where Patton seeks re election.
Funeral services for Edmund Jones Fountain were held Saturday at 10 30 am in the Fountain home room on East 29th Street. Survivors include two sons J J Fountain Jr and J M Fountain, a brother Dr W C Fountain, a granddaughter Edwin McAshan Fountain and Rosemary Fountain, plus nieces and great nieces. Born in Selma Alabama he moved to Bryan in boyhood and became a pharmacist and later a cotton planter in Burleson County.
Texas Extension Service director H H Williamson leads a group of Texas farmers including George G Chance of Bryan to Memphis for a three day conference with Secretary of Agriculture Henry A Wallace and AAA leaders. Other Texans join the delegation before a Chicago regional meeting to follow.
A district court judge sentenced Robert Green to fifteen years for assault with intent to murder and he will serve concurrently with another term. Green shot two policemen two years ago and was captured by Sheriff Nunn and brought to Bryan. Seven other prisoners received prison terms, including Louis Cox for assault with intent to murder two years, John Griffin for forgery in three cases with multiple terms, John Donley and Fred Ellis for burglary and hog theft two to four years, Elzie Williams for assault to rob two years, and A Smith with Ennis Mitchell for burglary two years. The group marks Brazos county’s largest recent conveyance to Huntsville.
Stockholders held an annual meeting Friday at 5 pm and elected a board for the year. Officers chosen were Mrs. Lee J. Rountree president C. M. Cole vice president and P. A. Tardy secretary treasurer.
The Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin issued a mandate Saturday morning in the State versus Sherrod Holiday of Edge. Holiday was found guilty last year of turkey theft and fined 50 dollars plus costs. The district court judgment is affirmed and the fine stands.
The Texas Highway Department opened contests in Brazos County for filling stations, schools, and homes to promote highway beauty. A three-member judging committee, appointed by the county chairman of the Citizens' Organization for Highway Beautification, will determine winners by May 28 with awards to be presented by June 1. Winners receive a handsomely designed emblem, with one award per contest per county, and past winners may compete in future years.
DeHart found guilty of auto theft by a district court jury. He received a two year term in state prison, with the prior five year sentence suspended for good behavior. The case involved selling the Richie car with matching motor numbers and a prior jail evasion. Brown pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated and received a one year term suspended during good behavior.
Lamar Etheridge an employee of Howell Wholesale Grocery and Willard Asher of Thornton were injured when a truck overturned two miles south of College on Highway 6. Asher had a deep gash and was treated at St Joseph's hospital and later moved to Thornton. Etheridge suffered spinal and chest injuries and remained hospitalized with condition described as serious.
Page Mangum of Vicksburg Mississippi, student at A and M College, leaves Bryans with his father P S Mangum to attend the Mississippi state convention of De Molays in Meridian. He serves as state master councilor, elected last year, and his term ends with this meeting he will be gone a week.
Don Dougherty and George E. Hadley traveled to Millican yesterday to attend funeral services for Miss Annie Lee Thompson, daughter of Mr and Mrs L M Thompson, who died Wednesday afternoon at her parents home after a pneumonia illness.
Three John E. Blair photographs hang at the Eagle office after San Antonio show by the Pictorial club. Blair, Bryan division highway engineer, submitted four images and three were accepted, including a Mexican boy study, the San Jose Mission, and a Brazos River light scene.
The Bryan College Station Business and Professional Women's Club hosted six visiting A M College students from abroad and two from Texas for its regular monthly program. Speaker Cleophas Stanley Speake of Lucknow India shared his American experiences. other attendees and musicians are named, venue activities noted, and dates for future events announced.
City Manager R G Williams, vice-president of the League of Texas Municipalities, will preside over a one day conference in Waco with officials from about 80 central Texas cities. Topics include taxation relief unemployment legislation city planning and municipal indebtedness. L W Hoelscher and A P Cagle will discuss city planning. Mayor Tom Miller of Austin will report on the New Orleans meeting.
William Edward Saunders a Bryan resident for 64 years and last surviving Confederate Army member in Brazos county died March 1 at age 90 after a long illness. Funeral services conducted by the Masons and Knights Templar with burial at Bryan City Cemetery and honors from Camp J B Robertson UCV.
Mrs Mills P Walker learned Friday night in Bryan of the death of her aunt Mrs Rowland Barrow in Austin after a illness. Funeral services were held in Austin Saturday at 2 30 p m. Mrs Barrow leaves husband and two children Charles and Mrs Russell Holmes both of Austin.
Mrs. J. M. Wagstaff and daughter Mrs. C. F. Christian of Abilene visited Bryan and stayed with Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Orms before traveling to Old Washington for the Centennial celebration. Wagstaff was born at Old Washington as Bessie McAlpine and is mother of Rep. R. M. Wagstaff.
Ed Chytil a well known Edge farmer was freed on not guilty verdict in a district court regarding chicken theft. A new indictment was filed later with a $300 bond set awaiting action by the next grand jury.
