I Maniloff was introduced Friday night as the new Lions club chairman for the Steeles Store community group. Music featured Hoot Gibson on violin Hoyt Thames guitar C L Benson and Ben Ruchti harmonica. Smetana club members Ima Mae Franklin Julia Holik and Henry Merka gave progress reports and A D Jackson will invite Rye 4 H club to meet July third Friday. Maniloff offered a prize to the club member with best progress report. Ben Ruchti's clog dancing drew repeated encores.
Dr. Henry Harrison of the Lions club reports a fine 4 H meeting at Smetana on Thursday night with progress reports music and talks. Julia Holik won first for best report with Lois McKalip and Henry Berka taking second and third.
A Bryan based citizens committee urged county taxes be cut by reducing property valuations to 9 000 000 for the coming year, not by lowering tax rates. The group led by H P Dansby met with the county commissioners to discuss economies and the proposed basis for county government funding.
A woman pursuing a shoe thief from Montgomery Ward was struck by a car in a Burleson County incident. Driver Williard Oldham of Burleson County says he was not at fault after the collision. The injured woman, Mrs. Willie Krenek, received treatment for minor cuts and a scalp wound.
The letter from W B DeWees, arriving January 1 1822 at the Little Brazos crossing, describes a long journey from Red River with several families and a harsh trek through Texas while detailing his observations and experiences with Native Americans. He notes subsequent travels to Colorado and San Antonio de Bexar later in 1823.
A freak of nature in Sherman reports a potato vine at Mrs. Walter Meredith's home in Denison yielding perfect underground potatoes and equally perfect tomatoes above ground. The unusual plant grows in the middle of a potato patch away from tomatoes.
Former residents of Grimes County gathered at the Fairview Methodist Episcopal church site near Richards for an old time barbecue. Guests included descendants who traveled from Tennessee to celebrate the community and roots of the Woods family and local pioneer settlers educated at the church and school established in 1862.

Bryan and Brazos county mourn the death of Adela Taylor Dodson 83 at home after a brief illness. A lifelong Bryan resident since girlhood, she was born in Alabama December 19 1848 and was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church. Survived by son Elmer M. Dodson, sister Mrs J B Dodson of Wills Point and brother T E Taylor of Bryan. Funeral Thursday at 4 from E M Dodson home on College Avenue conducted by Rev Jno L Wharton. Interment in Bryan City Cemetery under Mc Culloch Dansby. Pallbearers listed.
Madisonville resident Mrs. Aquilla Elizabeth Keefer age 31 years 1 month 11 days died at Wilkerson clinic today at 10 am after illness. Body sent to Madisonville. Friday funeral at 4 pm Rev G H Bounds and Rev C B Thompson officiating. Interment in Hopewell cemetery Nor mangee family burying ground. Survived by husband mother sisters brothers all of Madison county.
Reports show about 200 signatures gathered on petitions asking the Bryan city commission to reduce telephone rates. One petition had no signatures while another carried roughly 100 signatures.
A second attempted burglary at the Gordon Sewell Inc warehouse on South Bryan Avenue failed Monday night after a door was pried open and the burglar alarm activated. The would be burglars were also alerted.

A Thursday night barbecue at the First Baptist Church in Millican drew hundreds from Bryan Navasota Wellborn and nearby towns. County Attorney Oak McKenzie presided as master of ceremonies as candidates for county district and state offices spoke. Two college presidents and many business and agricultural leaders from the state and nation will speak at the twenty third annual short courses for farm and ranch people at Texas A and M College starting July 25.
