New Policy Adopted by Bryan High On Rural Student Admission
Bryan High announces a policy change for rural high school students entering the district. Superintendent H L Durham says rural pupils perform poorly in some courses and outlines two pathways: rural entrants get credit for the first two years without examination if they pass, while any beyond two years require written tests in English and mathematics. Man Pleads Guilty in Theft Case After Grand Jury Indictment

Profit Is Made On Chickens by Youth of Bryan
A Bryan youth reports a net profit of 31.99 from 198 fryers raised in 11 weeks. Bill LeGrand, a first year vocational agriculture student, housed 198 chicks in a 4 by 8 shed with a three deck battery brooder and sanitation via hardware cloth bottoms. They fed a university formula with cod liver oil, sold 96 chickens retail in Bryan and 102 wholesale in Houston.

The Bryan post office will revert to second class on July 1. The front courtesy mailbox will be discontinued as staff is reduced, and collections from that box will end. Mail can be deposited at the office up to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 9 p.m. on Sundays, with items sent on night trains.

Negro Is Guilty Of Murder Two-Year Sentence
Charles Hasley, a negro, was found guilty in district court of murdering Willie Edwards on July 18, 1931, and received a two year state prison term. Defense by Henderson and Hoyle. state represented by La mar Bethea and County Attorney Oak McKenzie with Bethea handling trial in McKenzie’s absence. Edwards’s skeletal remains were found in a ditch months after his disappearance.

Gourds From 1837 Win Texas Fame In Rusk
Mrs. Vic Pryor of Rusk owns the oldest gourds in Texas grown in 1837. One measures 59 inches around and served as a sugar gourd. the other is a long Spanish gourd used as a water container. Pryor’s father carried it in the Cherokee War of 1839. Gourds were vital kitchen tools in pioneer days.
