A veteran pacifist recalls his birth on May 27 1864 in Sumter County Alabama near the Sukanatchie river. He notes the Civil War’s end and the era of slavery while describing a frontier birth and a slave nurse who later benefited the child.
Dr and Mrs L McDonald of Hutto visit Dr McDonalds mother Mrs J D McDonald in Prospect community and attend the School Superintendent conference at A and M College. Dr McDonald earned a doctorate in education from the University of Texas and serves as Hutto public schools superintendent. Mrs M R Bentley returns from Marlin after tonsil operation with daughter Miss Ann Bentley. Mr and Mrs T E Orman of Fort Worth stop with Luke Patronella en route to New Orleans.
Graham Post 159 will host the Sixth District convention to be held Saturday and Sunday. Delegates from posts in the district gather with Corsicana Drum and Bugle Corps as official band arriving Saturday. State adjutant George E. Hughes attends and efforts aim to bring state commander J B Benefield.
Ann Kernodle the granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Wipprecht is nursing a broken arm after falling against a chair on the back gallery at the family home last Saturday afternoon. She is reported to be getting along nicely with little inconvenience.
Miss Katie Daffan life secretary of Hood's Texas Brigade confirms June 27 1954 as official reunion day for Hood's and Green's Brigades to be held in Bryan their permanent reunion city. Mrs C G Cameron life secretary of Green's Brigade also notified and both women are arranging the program for publication by Bryan committees.
AREA ARRANGEMENTS COLLEGE STATION June 12 The first Texas School Administrative Conference at Texas A and M College showcases the state’s diverse educational systems from one room schools to large city high schools. Six hours daily of intensive study plus group meetings probe finance facilities training and looming adult education needs.
Funeral services for Kenneth Boring aged 10 months and 25 days were held at McCulloch Dansby chapel then Steep Hollow church with a visiting minister from Teague. Interment followed at Steep Hollow cemetery. He is survived by his parents and paternal grandparents from Austin.
T P Boyett formerly of Bryan and Rosenberg died Tuesday near noon at Memorial Hospital in Houston after a long illness. The body will be brought to Bryan for burial. funeral time undecided. He had two brothers and three sisters in Bryan and relatives were summoned as his condition worsened.
Charlie Morrison, barber in Cherryville Kansas, announces a promo giving a mug of free beer with every haircut. He attributes the price drop of haircuts to wartime costs and notes the lower price effective from Monday.
In Chicago on June 12, bartender Art Jacobson signaled to police that a blond woman admired his teeth then stole them after he removed them from his mouth. The teeth housed $100 in gold and the woman remains at large with the missing item.
Jose Avila a Mexican tenant on the Brazos Varisco plantation is jailed for murder in the fatal shooting of his sister-in-law Ruparo Avila wife of his brother. He then shot at his 12-year-old daughter and killed himself with a self-inflicted wound. Avila survived and was held for grand jury action.
Dr. F L Thomas of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station reports checks on flea hoppers and other cotton pests. He notes erratic flea hopper occurrence with varying field injury and 10 percent to over half the plants retarded by thrips, causing irregular leaf shape and branching. Boll weevil emergence before June 1 measured 14.46 percent.
Checks totaling 54900 have been received by County Agent J Benson for cotton land rents in Brazos County. This is the first half of the money due under completed contracts. Notices go out to farmers and checks will be distributed at the County Agent's office in the Brazos County Chamber of Commerce offices.
The Bryan city commission votes to create a $50,000 permanent fund from net utility earnings for plant protection and use $45,000 in long term bonds as an investment. Interest stays with the city. Charter amendment carried 236 yes to 22 no. ordinance to take effect July 1. Kemp high athletic field petitioned by A M Waldrop and Wilson Bradley.
Bryan Hospital welcomed visitors on opening day from 10 a m to 5 p m as officials led tours. Dr Jnc W Black and Dr R B Ehlinger greeted guests while out of town doctors attended the event. Six pages of names were recorded at the entrance as the crowd grew. Two patients were admitted and three more reservations were noted for Tuesday.
The William Scott Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will observe Flag Day Thursday at 4 pm in the club house at the Municipal Playgrounds. Mrs. W. S. Howell and Mrs. S. W. Bissing will host the afternoon. All chapter members are urged to attend.
Riverside residents led by Charles Kosarek plan a Thursday barbecue beside the new highway. An orchestra will provide old time music as all candidates for public office are invited to speak, with abundant food and a cordial public invitation.
A. C. Allen, aeronautical engineer in charge of Texas airport projects, says the Bryan airport is one of two Texas sites deemed fundamentally important for revival under the Civil Works Administration. The plan includes fencing and border lighting, with the government supplying labor and materials and the city providing supervision. Funds are expected after the new fiscal year, aiming for completion by year end.
Funeral services for H. W. Plumb of Kingsville were conducted Sunday at the First Methodist church with Rev. L. C. Beasley and Dr. L. B. Elrod officiating. A male quartet sang two hymns, and interment followed in Bryan City Cemetery. Pallbearers were local Kingsville men. honorary pallbearers included several regional associates and Kingsville Lions Club members.
Funeral services for John Jolly Jones were held Sunday at 4 p m at his farm home two miles south of the A and M College. Rev R L Brown conducted the ceremony. interment followed at Old Bethel cemetery. Jones was 69 years old and survived by his widow seven sons one daughter two siblings and eight grandchildren.
The Welborn church barbecue has moved from Tuesday, June 12, to Friday, June 15. Candidates will speak at the event.
Brazos relief headquarters announce the county will receive part of 100 000 dairy cattle moved from drought areas in Texas. Cattle aid families by improving living conditions with food supply, to be paid over two years in cash kind or labor. Applications accepted at Main Street relief HQ. Bryan office to notify Washington on Saturday of cattle desired.
Brazos County Clubwomen and Mrs Alma Metcalf met at City Hall to set June 21 1934 at 5 pm for a rally at Sue Haswell Memorial Park. The plan includes recreation committee names and funding for top attendees at county club meetings to attend the A and M Short Course, with scholarships awarded to Crenshaw and McGregor and others listed among leading attendees.
Decomposed body of a Black man, unnamed by Brazos county authorities, found Saturday on the Missouri Pacific right of way near Mumford in Robertson county. Head crushed, arm missing, with bullet wound evidence. authorities believe the man was killed and placed on the track after several days' death.
The body of 16 year old Helen Dexter of Central City Kentucky was found on Missouri Pacific tracks at Valley Junction near Hearne. Investigators believe chest wounds indicate she was shot before the train struck her. A youth seer identified the girl yesterday.
Four people were injured and one car wrecked in a Saturday afternoon collision at the College avenue and 28th street intersection. Francisco Hernandez drove one vehicle and Will Campbell drove the other. Julio Douglass, three, suffered a broken leg and facial wounds. Charles Douglass, about 20, was badly cut. Pablo Rubio and Pablo Martinez also sustained cuts. Both drivers escaped injury.
Attorney general and gubernatorial candidate James V. Allred will address the annual dinner of the Texas Municipal Utilities League at Bryan Municipal Playgrounds clubhouse Monday night at about 8 o'clock. He will also speak to a Bryan audience after the dinner. A barbecue for about 1,000 attendees will follow from 5:30 with music by the Bryan Community band, under Henry Locke.
Knights of Columbus held an 8 o clock in person business meeting. New officers named to be installed in July include Herman Wehrman grand knight Frank Kocman chancellor Anton F Zemanek recording secretary Louis Bolmanski warden Anton P Zemanek advocate Frank Schultz treasurer Frank Regmund inside guard Sam Carrabo outside guard and Frank Havel three year trustee.
Chester Langoton, a Black man, was indicted on bigamy and stood trial in district court Wednesday. He was acquitted of the charge.
