Orville S. Carpenter director of the Texas old age assistance commission threatens dismissal for any employee who engages in political campaigns this summer. He cites the statute forbidding state employees to participate in politics in a letter to pension personnel.

Miss Mary Carroll of Corpus Christi, a niece of Mrs. Maggie Harris, has left Bryan to re enter the University of Texas at Austin for the summer session after A and M College commencement. She plans to receive her Ph D at the close of the session. Dr and Mrs Sid Perry and children Annabelle and James Sidney II have returned from Tulsa, Oklahoma, visiting his ill father Dr M L Perry. They were joined by his cousin Miss Louise Perry of Rogers Arkansas, the only girl cousin Dr Perry has.
Mrs Grace John of LaMarque a familiar Bryan College resident and former publicity office worker at College and the Bryan Eagle is among the five dollar prize winners in the sixth of nine weekly Texas history contests staged by General Foods Corporation.
The American Legion Auxiliary met at the Legion home to discuss the July 4 celebration bingo stand and the fall fair for Brazos county. Committees were named for Flowers Pictures Textiles and art Bakery and more. The unit received a Centennial coin for high membership and count rose to 151.
Mrs. C. A. Searcy tends two fine prune trees at her Bryan home with limbs strained by green fruit. Three inches of stem yield 20 full grown prunes. The trees, though not yet ripe, promise to draw visitors from across the state to witness this unusual horticultural sight.
Mrs. R. C. Postum of Caldwell dies from brain concussion after a two-vehicle collision on 15th Street and Oak Grove Avenue. The crash involved Jack Poole, his two daughters, and H. L. Whitley Jr. Mr. Poole is a Burleson County sheriff candidate. Mrs. Postum operated a Caldwell photograph gallery. The Poole party and Whitley all suffered bruises. funeral details are unavailable.
Wedgewood in England will produce commemorative AM College dinner plates designed by the Architecture and Landscape Arts department. Initiated by P. L. Downs Jr of class of 1906 and backed by the Association of Former Students. Twelve copper engravings on Ivory Queensware depict college landmarks from Gathright Hall 1876 to the Veterinary Hospital 1932.
Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Whitley and Mrs. Lamar Carroll attended funeral services in Caldwell on Sunday for Mrs. R. C. Postum who died Saturday after an auto accident Friday in Bryan.
The Parker-Astin Hardware company celebrated its 25th anniversary and noted it remains the strongest firm in its field between Houston and Dallas. The Bryan company buys stock in carload lots to serve the local trade with prompt pricing. The original organization date was June 8 1911 with Parker as president and Astin as vice president.
The Brazos Valley Cotton Cooperative board met led by president J R McCrary Calvert. The annual membership meeting is set for June 30 with several thousand producers expected to attend and barbecue served. E F Creekmore of New Orleans American Cotton Cooperative may speak. Sue Haswell Memorial Park is a tentative meeting site. Directors present included Rogers Navasota Bain Caldwell Atkinson McCrary Schaer Oliver Baker Navasota Gilland Calvert Oliver Brenham.
The Normangee group tours Bryan announcing a June 16 to 19 Centennial celebration open with a camp and concert. Sponsored by the San Antonio Road Association the program features state and national figures including Gov Allred and Atty Gen McCraw. Congressmen and Senators are expected to attend. Events include band contests old fiddlers and old time dance with entries in attire of early Texas settlers.
A color sketch and specifications for the Stephen F. Austin high school band uniforms have arrived and are with band director E Vergne Adams and school officials. Uniforms are green with white trim, white shoes and belt, caps with white visors and nine inch white ostrich plumes. Local merchants may bid on the suits as the contract award committee is formed from school board members, the high school principal, Miss Wesa Weddington, Band Mothers' Club, and Mr. Adams.
Mr and Mrs M R Bentley return from Washington DC where Mr Bentley attended a soil conservation conference. Mrs Bentley attended press conferences with President and Mrs Roosevelt and the Associated Country Women of the World meeting.
Verne Cook Andrews and Doris Louise Simpson obtained marriage licenses as recorded in the notices. The filing confirms their forthcoming marriage and legal eligibility per local civil records.
Jack Shelton state agent and vice director of the Texas A M extension service at College Station was re elected president of the American Jersey Cattle Club for a third term. Four new directors were named B Carter Cam eron Morrison H M Wivell and E S Brigham with holdover directors also attending. The election is seen as Texas recognition as a leading dairy cattle state.
H W Wehrman was elected Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Bryan Council No 1834 during its annual officer election on a Wednesday evening. Other officers named include Edward J Voltin deputy grand knight Jno A O Connor chancellor Frank A Zubik recording secretary Frank Schultz treasurer Jno J Fickey advocate Louis Bolmanskie warden Frank F Regmund inner guard Frank J Rudhti outer guard Frank Havel Frank Saculla Steve Regmund trustees and Rt Rev Msgr J B Gleissner chaplain.
The Reliance Home Demonstration club met with Mrs. C. N. Shealey to choose dress materials and patterns for rally day outfits. Mrs. Alma Metcalfe offered pattern and cutting help and will meet Tuesday at 6 o'clock at Mrs. Tom Berdine's. members listed include Mesdames Shealey Berdine Mahle Lawless Merka White Hartsfield and Essie Shealey. punch and cookies served.
College Station June 9 Soy beans will be processed for the first time in the experimental mill at Texas A and M College Wednesday by students in the ninth annual short course for cotton seed oil mill operators. The program includes power tests linter operation cooking and processing cotton seed meats with demonstrations on line grading and discussions of instruments used in the trade.
Friends report Mrs Elizabeth Cook sustained a broken left arm at her home on South College Avenue late Sunday evening. She toppled from the front steps onto the concrete walk when her shoe heel caught. She is resting at home and recovering well.
Post officials announce adjusted World War I bonus bonds will be delivered starting June 15 with Bryan Post Office limited to a basement office for these transactions. Veterans must identify themselves at the local office or have two witnesses sign for unrecognized recipients. Payments will be made by Treasury checks issued from 251 designated offices, not at Bryan.
The first Summer session convocations at Texas A and M College will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. Dr. C H Winkler, session director, reports two talks. Dr. Heinz Gruner will address engineering faculty and students. Dr. William McAndrew will speak on Why and How Should Schools Teach Politics in the Assembly Hall. All class work will pause to allow attendance.
Dusting for flea hoppers begins in the lower Brazos Valley with planes over the plantations of George G. Chance Seth Mooring John Ettie and J Earl Porter spraying cotton with sulphur. Other area planters have not yet started and damage threat is high with broad poisoning expected soon.
The New Home District association plans its second emancipation celebration at Buffalo tabernacle June 19-20 with basket dinners for each family. At 3 p m Friday June 19 the emancipation sermon will be delivered by Rev. Wm Sandles. A Friday night singing convention invites Madison Leon and Freestone counties choirs with a prize for best singers. Speakers include Prof W T Vandyke Prof Fortson G H Henry and others. Rev S BE Diggs of Bryan acts as moderator and E L Brown is secretary.
The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce board approved the 1936 budget totaling 7025 with funds pledged higher than 1935 and allocations across Agriculture City Development Education and Fire Prevention. Drs. Harrison Ehlinger Wilkerson urged discontinuing hospital nurse services and diverting funds to a city county hospitalization unit.
Bernie Dillon, manager of the Bryan branch of H. Roller Mills Co., is named supervisor over 34 Texas counties and will move to Port Arthur Friday. He keeps Bryan quarters as his mother and daughter remain there. Dennis Cahill of Smetana succeeds him as Bryan branch manager.
Brazos county clerk Frank Worsham, sole candidate for the office, gains a challenger in the form of a fine young son born June 3. Both mother and child are at Wilkerson clinic.
