The People's Column notes heavy rains and floods have damaged Brazos county roads. The piece urges faster construction of better highways, including all weather east west north south routes, to aid farmers and business leaders and calls for a plan to unite progressive citizens in support.
Miss Wilma Whitmire, a CIA student, visits Bryan en route home to Madisonville for A and M College commencement. Jean McAdams plans to move from Bryan to Waco to live with her father. Mrs J P Buck of Sour Lake visits Bryan while Mr Buck teaches at UT summer school. No prayer meeting at the Methodist church tonight due to the pastor's absence.
President Hoover sent a letter to Senator Capper and C. C. Younggreen praising advertising ethics ahead of the International Advertising Association's Berlin convention August 12 to 15. He cited self examination by advertisers and agency checks as key advances in business ethics over the past twenty years.
Mostly cloudy tonight and Thursday for Bryan and vicinity. East Texas expects mostly cloudy skies with probable showers in the north portion tonight and Thursday. West Texas forecast calls for partly cloudy conditions with possible showers in the northern areas.
Mayor E. J. Jenkins told Bryan Lions Club that the city must raise funds for school operation and maintenance. He said an amendment to the city charter should be placed before voters this fall to increase the school tax levy. He cited heavier expenses with the opening of Travis school and rising student registration.
Willie Wilson of East 26th street wakes to smoke from a blaze in his home. He rescues his wife and two children, ages 7 and 11 months, then alerts the Bryan fire department. The roof is damaged and the rear gutted. losses are about 2700 for the house and 300 for furnishings, with insurance expected to cover the damage. The cause remains a mystery.
London June 5. Labour leader MacDonald, victorious in last week's elections, accepted King George's invitation to form a cabinet to replace Stanley Baldwin's Conservative government, which resigned yesterday.
H O Boatwright Mrs M G Nall and Miss Mary Jane Nall report they arrived in Charlotte North Carolina safely and without material delay despite floods. They attended the annual reunion of Confederate Veterans and Daughters of the Confederacy and plan to visit Greenville afterward. Mr Boatwright also intends to spend time visiting his old home and acquaintances across the state.
A fatal engine explosion in Raymonville claimed the life of James Parker, age unknown, who was injured yesterday while enroute to Medical College. Authorities report burns and fatal injuries as investigators examine the site.
In Austin on June 5 the Texas House debated whether to ask J. T. Robison general land office commissioner to resign or face impeachment as the senate sits as a court.
A 160 mile sequence of pageants from Waco to Cisco is planned for early July. Eight towns along highway No 67 join the Indian Trail caravan of autos linking the events. The plan grew from a coordinated effort by the sister towns in Waco and surrounding areas.
Navasota River remains over roads as traffic to Navasota and Houston, and Madisonville is blocked by high waters. District Engineer J. E. Blair says the river is receding slowly with no clear time for route reopenings. Travelers are advised to detour via Caldwell, Brenham and Sealy, where the road is open in fair condition.
Groveton Chamber of Commerce plans Rally Day on June 14 with Secretary S E Eberstadt invited to assist. The event aims to boost local enthusiasm and is backed by East Texas and Bryan organizations, with all expenses covered by the Etex group.
Governor Dan Moody backs a Guggenheim foundation plan to mark town roofs so cross country flyers can spot them. About 2000 of 7500 intermediate towns planned to participate while others already marked or still marking.
The endurance aircraft Fort Worth set another record after more than seven days aloft. Spark plugs fired about 130 435 200 times during the flight and the continuous spark would equal an unbroken light flash 41 miles long.
V Ray Adams former Dallas bank employee charged with the murder of Orville Mathews pleaded not guilty at the trial opening in Corsicana. Mathews was shot to death last September during the incident.
In Amarillo on June 5, the trial over Grace Morrison’s death proceeded amid gossip in court. Plaintiff Mrs. Levi A. Stallworth faces a charge of shooting Morrison after a dispute over alleged friendly relations with Stallworth’s husband. Ethel Roper testified about the rooming house visit the night of the shooting.
The Bryan Woman's Club building committee has drafted plans for a new club house on the purchased property at Washington avenue and East 27th street. J. T. Freeland prepared the plans and is directing local school construction work. The committee will meet to formally accept the blueprints once they arrive and begin building, aiming for a June 15th deadline.
J Webb Howell president of the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce and new East Texas Chamber of Commerce director will attend the first board meeting in Jacksonville on June 10. President Hayne Nelms calls the meeting to elect vice presidents assign committees and outline the year’s work.
Last night the city commission approved building estimates totaling 14 329 dollars. Included were Travis School 5 876 dollars Bowie School 1 986 dollars and City Hall 6 567 dollars.
Mrs. Eva Rablen of Texas pleads guilty to the murder of her deaf husband Col. Rablen in Sonora California. She admits poisoning his coffee as part of a death by own action pact but could not complete it due to distractions at a nearby dance hall. She faces life imprisonment.
Dr. Hubert Work, chairman of the Republican National Committee, has submitted his resignation effective in the early fall. President Hoover received the letter, and the White House announced the president will express appreciation and regret. Work said the committee would convene early in the fall to select a successor.
The Rev James E Corder pastor of the First Baptist church in Robert Lee is described as an all round man. He handles plumbing on a newly built house, lays concrete sidewalks, and serves as secretary of the city council.
In Sherman on June 4 Austin College granted 43 degrees. Four graduates earned Master of Arts and 39 received Bachelor of Arts. The class includes 32 men and 11 women.
A Brazos County raid led to the arrest of Sam Loren, an Italian resident, after a tip from a city employee. Authorities seized a sizable quantity of liquor described as whiskey and wine allegedly stored in mosquito breeding areas, prompting charges of possession of intoxicants.
June 5 Moody address to lawmakers reports favor for a nine member state board of education and abolition of the state text book commission. The bill reshaped to have superintendent and board secretary elected at polls. Governor Moody also urged stricter utility regulation a state income tax and a 4 cent gasoline tax.
C Walter Sharpe, contractor in charge of building the First State Bank vault, describes the security features and dimensions of the new money vault. The structure includes 18 inch thick concrete walls, four steel bar layers, a 3-4 inch steel plate lining, burglar proof doors and alarms. The separate book vault is smaller but equally secure against burglars and fire. Sharpe notes his 20 years of experience and warns that lawful borrowing is easier than stealing from the vault.
County Clerk Jess B. McGee announced a temporary halt on marriage licenses from June 12 to 15 due to a new law requiring a three day notice and a health exam for grooms. Licenses granted before June 12 avoid the new requirements, as seen with a license issued yesterday to L. T. Lester and Ida Mae Smith.

Al Rowden convicted in Stephens county for his wife Pauline Rowden’s murder was granted a new trial by the court of criminal appeals. The reversal cites discovery of new evidence and remands to the trial court for a retrial.
Theatrical magnate and former Boston Red Sox owner Harry H Frazee died at his Park Avenue home in New York. Mayor James J Walker, a friend, was by his bedside. Frazee, 48, began as a road agent at 16 and produced shows from Uncle Josh Perkins to No No Nanette. He built the Cort Theatre in Chicago and the Longacre in New York and led the Red Sox from 1916 to 1923.
Washington June 5 Call ing of a Democratic dinner for Jouett Shouse newly appointed aide to Chairman Raskob of the national committee prompted Senator Simmons of North Carolina to demand the unhorsing of Raskob in the interests of harmony.
In Corpus Christi on June 5, Andrew Crawford Mathews eight year old son of Mr and Mrs Sim Mathews of Port Aransas was found dead under a local pier following an all night search. He was last seen playing on the pier the previous day.
Bob Silver and three companions escaped Wynne prison farm and are to be tried for robbery with firearms. Mrs. Silver plans to attend and support him in court, accompanied by defense attorney J G Minkert and Huntsville lawyer Mack Gates. Mrs. Silver travels from Wichita Falls to be present.

An important department in Bryan's summer school is the commercial department with Miss Clara Calhoun as teacher and director. Typewriting shorthand and bookkeeping are taught. The course shows strong student interest from Bryan College and vicinity. Enrollment continues through the week and Miss Calhoun welcomes prospective students.
The cotton market remained sluggish with futures down 8 to 10 points and local spot prices quoted between 17.00 and 17.80 cents per pound. Traders watched for demand signals as prices softened across the session.
