The Legislature adopts Joint Resolution No 7 ordering a statewide vote on July 16 1929 to raise the governor’s salary to 10000 a year. The State Teachers Association Executive Committee in Fort Worth May 11 urges support and asks readers to inform their school boards to pass resolutions endorsing the amendment.
W. J. Coulter of Bryan attends the National Rotary convention in Dallas this week and has long traveled with Rotarians worldwide. Family visits continue as Miss Polly Williams of Yazoo City and Miss Louise Weddington of Bryan plan trips. Col and Mrs Todd move into a new home. others visit Southwestern University at Georgetown to see Roland Dansby and participate in university programs.
Judge J C Hutcheson Jr. established a presumed record in Brownsville by imposing 69 sentences on opening day of the May term of the federal district court. Sentences were handed down between 11 a m and 4 30 p m. The prior all day session saw 88 sentences.
A majority of arbiters in the Texas League are former players. Ziggy Sears concluded fifteen years on the diamond last season, Harry Kane pitched for Fort Worth and other clubs, Hunter Hill served as player and manager, Cecil Griggs played the outfield before owning the blue, and Donnelly also moved from playing to umpiring.
Special to The Eagle reports cloudy conditions with thundershowers tonight and Thursday for Bryan and vicinity. East Texas sees thunderstorms tonight and Thursday with warmer readings in the lower Rio Grande Valley tonight. West Texas remains fair tonight.
Land Grant Schools at Texas A and M announce a June meeting at the Texas institution to discuss a unified program for soil and water conservation. Seven states Oklahoma Arkansas Kansas Louisiana Missouri New Mexico and Colorado are invited to participate with representatives to present each state plan. Director A B Conner will outline the Texas program.
W A Keeling of Austin, chairman of the state bar association legislative committee, issued a call for an organizational meeting in Austin on June 12 to plan adopting a constitutional amendment to increase the Supreme Court membership from seven to nine. The amendment is to be voted on July 16.
The Gulf and West Texas Railroad has applied to the Interstate Commerce Commission for permission to construct a new line from Fredericksburg to San Angelo, Texas.
Word has been received that Mr. Stanford, two years as assistant manager and agricultural director of the East Texas Chamber of Commerce, will return to Bryan next Saturday. He has accepted the Texas editor post at Southern Agriculturist and will open editorial offices here on Monday, June 3.
Speaker W. S. Barron says the Texas legislature will tackle appropriation bills first in the second special session called to convene next Monday. A heated fight is expected over estimates between the house and senate. After that, highway financing and motor registration fees are likely to be addressed, with gasoline tax increases uncertain.
Dr. H B Stenzel of A M College geology department wed Miss Elsie A Brodbeck of Austin and Navasota Saturday afternoon. Justice J T McGee performed the ceremony, arranged days earlier, allowing the couple to catch their afternoon train to Houston before sailing from Galveston for Europe.
Austin swimming instructor Jack Freith, charged with kidnapping Fannie Lee Minter, is under arrest in New Bedford Massachusetts. The Texas university student, socially prominent, was with Freith when arrested at Hotel Tourraine where they posed as man and wife. A governor issued requisition seeks Freith’s return to face swindling charges. Miss Minter’s status as student and the earlier nationwide search are noted.
Manila reports the death toll from Friday's typhoon in Leyte province reaching 112 as communications to the area are restored. Initial figures a day earlier listed 10 dead.
May 29 report from Old Orchard Maine notes the Green Flash and Yellow Bird monoplanes delayed for analysis after Green Flash hit sand spilling gasoline while Yellow Bird wing tank seam opened causing a brief return. In Dallas Dr. Robert S Hyer 68 longtime Southern Methodist University president emeritus died of a heart attack. he was a renowned southwest educator.
Los Angeles May 29. Bert J. Fahy continued his monoplane endurance attempt to surpass the 35 hour solo record held by Martin Jensen. He has been aloft 30 hours at the time.
H B Seale, longtime Brazos County resident and son of pioneer D T Seale, died at his Athens home Tuesday afternoon at 4 15. Sisters Mrs Bettie Bell Mrs Kate Wilcox and Mrs Susie Haygood were with him. Funeral services and burial will be held in Athens today.
The annual reunion of Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy will be in Charlotte, N Y June 4 7. Members of affiliated groups may obtain ID certificates through Mrs Albert Buchanan to secure reduced rail fares from Bryan. Certificates require membership in specified organizations or appointed sponsor status.
A mob of about 200 men stormed the Crockett county jail in Alamo Tennessee and abducted 19 year old Joe Boxley, accused of attacking a justice of the peace's wife, and hanged him from a nearby tree.
City firemen will attend the Texas State Firemen's Association convention in Galveston from June 11 to 13. The Bryan delegation will stay at the Bucaneer Hotel annex, with members including C. E. Jenkins, T. J. Jenkins, Roy Pippen and wife, Will Blazek and wife, W. J. Head and wife, H. J. Burger and wife, R. W. Warren and wife, C. E. Griesser and wife, John Stasney, Sam Noto and wife, W. S. House, Willman Ross, and Milton Baker.
Mr. and Mrs. J. A. McQueen, long time residents of Bryan, are moving back from Temple to occupy their former home on West 29th Street. Household goods arrive today and the couple expects to arrive soon.
J L Gauese, a Black man, received three years in state prison for forging and passing a $3 check. Judge W C Davis imposed the term after a guilty verdict. Earlier trials involved a $1.50 forged check with mixed jury verdicts and a third similar charge was dismissed.
At o clock tonight Stephen F. Austin auditorium hosts graduates who completed work in Bryan elementary schools. Travis school has 7 graduates and Bowie 19. Salutatory speakers are Russell Hillier and Lawrence Parker. Valedictories come from Louise Dyer and Arthur Stewart. The graduation address is by Rev. Thos Gordon Watts and Superintendent H L Durham.
Governor Moody outlined a long agenda for the second called Texas legislature session starting June 3. He plans bills on public utilities appropriations taxation highway revenues water priority blue sky laws judicial reforms education and motor traffic. He may amend first-session measures and decide on the prison concentration bill.
New York May 29 Ed Gallagher of the Gallagher and Shean variety stage team died of paralysis today at Rivercrest Sanitarium Astoria Queens. He first fell ill about a year ago recovered and returned to the stage in February this year when he suffered a stroke.
Dallas May 29. The American Exchange Company, a subsidiary of the American National Bank of Dallas, to handle high class securities, was organized. The new firm will be capitalized at 1,000,000 dollars with Nathan Adams named president. Bank officers will serve as its managers and stock will be owned by bank shareholders.

Governor Kobler signed the bill repealing Wisconsin prohibition enforcement as voters had commanded in the spring election. Earlier attempts to block passage in the senate and assembly failed, leaving enforcement of city laws to federal agents.
Russell P. Satterthwaite, 19, a Harvard College freshman, was found dead in his Cambridge room with a chloroform cloth over his face. Medical Examiner David C. Dow ruled it a death by own action. he was the son of Pennington Satterthwaite, an architect from Short Hills New Jersey.
The trial of Bob Silver, Fort Worth theater bandit, charged with robbery with firearms after escaping Wynne farm prison, is set for Thursday June 6. His three companions in the escape will also be tried here. A record 210 men comprise four special venires, summoned by Sheriff J H Reed. The petit jury was dismissed after the Ganlese forgery case. no more jury trials this week.
Brenham May 29 John Callahan of Kenney is in a local hospital with a fractured skull and other injuries after two cars collided at a sharp turn on the Bellville highway south of Brenham. Other occupants were only slightly hurt and the cars were demolished.
Mr and Mrs Nathan Greenwood of Freeport were driving to Dallas when heavy rain halted their car and made roads impassable. They stopped in Bryan Tuesday afternoon and will resume their journey to Dallas once highways reopen.
Weekly prayer services at many Bryan churches were cancelled for the week due to Bryan High School commencement days and Allen Academy graduation events.
