Daugherty Committee Alleges Conspiracy Evidence

Former Attorney General Daugherty refused to testify to the Senate committee probing his conduct. He charged the panel with attempts to smear him and denied illicit profit from his office. Chairman Brookhart criticized the statement as a personal refutation and pledged reply. He claimed to prove criminal conspiracy in Daugherty's household and noted a $75,000 deposit before leaving office.

Barbecue Fundraiser At Millican Church Draws Crowd

Long tables at the Millican Methodist church hosted a pork and goat barbecue to raise money for the electric lighting system. The event drew a large crowd and nets from cake sales plus an auction by S. bk. Eberstadt of Bryan Chamber of Commerce added about $56 to the proceeds, with over $100 total reported. Families and residents from Bryan attended, including Jack T. Johnson and A. S. McSwain Jr.

Record Rainfall Doubles 1923 Totals in 1924

Preliminary statistics from R. C. Franks show 1924 rainfall reaching 34.20 inches by May, with 84.20 inches total in 1924 to date and 43.33 inches in all of 1923. If June matches July last year, the first half of 1924 could nearly equal 1923’s full year, amid fears of drought and unprecedented wet winter and spring.

Nixie Veteran Austin Drops Dead in Memphis Street

In Memphis on June 4, Confederate veteran H. F. Brach of Austin Texas collapsed and died in the street during the thirty fourth annual reunion of the United Confederate Veterans. Physicians cited an acute heart attack as the cause.

Infant buried in Friday funeral for McGane infant

A brief service led by Rev. C. B. Thompson of the Free Baptist church was held Friday afternoon for the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. McGane who live at J. Z. Ramsey's residence. Interment followed at Bryan City Cemetery.

Absentee voting illustrated by County Clerk McSwain

County Clerk A S McSwain outlines the Thirty Eighth Legislature absentee voting rules. Qualified voters absent from their county may vote by delivering poll tax or exemption certificates to the county clerk up to ten days before an election or via notary mail return under specific deadlines. Notaries must verify the ballot marked by the elector without assistance and mail it to the county clerk in the elector’s county with an official affidavit. Postage is paid by the voter. Applies to all elections including general and primary.

District Court Clears Docket Amid Settlement Rumors

In district court on Friday two matters dominated the docket. The M. F. Dansby insurance suits were adjourned to next week unless a settlement is reached. The negro civil suit J. D. Daniels and W. C. Daniels versus Ed Scott and Jeff Castles involving six hundred dollars from The Peoples Undertaking Company was heard with county and city lawyers present. Judge Davis had promised a decision today but none was issued by press time.

Fred Upham of Chicago resigns as treasurer of the Republican National Committee after many years of service. He cites ill health in a statement issued from Coolidge headquarters in Cleveland on June 4.

Weekend Rain Totals Near Half Inch

Weekend rainfall measured from Saturday morning to this morning totaled about 0.45 inches, according to the government gauge at the Geo. A. Adams Insurance Agency. Weather remained threatening with no definite forecast for when rain will begin or how much will fall.

Special Judges Sit On Ferguson Case

Acting Governor T W Davidson names Judge Alexander Coke of Dallas and Judge Howard Templeton of San Antonio to sit on the supreme court as special judge to answer certified questions in the injunction suit to keep James E Ferguson off the gubernatorial primary ballot. Chief Justice Cureton and Associate Justice Greenwood disqualified themselves due to prior impeachment proceedings involving Ferguson. It seems unlikely the court will rule before the primary as arguments cannot occur before June 11 and rulings would push into July.

Tragic Wheelock Youth William Scasta Dies in Self Inflicted Rifle Shot

William Scasta aged 24 of Wheelock died after an accidental 32 caliber rifle discharge at his father’s home three miles from Wheelock. He reportedly whispered to his mother good bye after the shot as he collapsed. Survived by parents two brothers and a sister funeral planned in Bryan with McCullough Gordon Co handling arrangements. District Court seeks official tester of liquor cases

The district court plans to appoint an official tester to classify liquor as spirituous or intoxicating. Justice J. W. Hamilton recently test tested a sample in the Peter Zulkoski case and called it real stuff. The position has no permanent holder and many applicants are expected. Local jury members might be allowed to sample concoctions to ease staffing.

Heaviest Rain Halts Traffic On Highway Trip

Edgar Buchanan returned from a business trip to Houston and reports the biggest rain of the year along the highway. He drove by automobile and found water so high at Hempstead travel was impossible, with cars halted for hours. After an all night journey he reached Bryan at 5 am today.

Bryan Girl Scouts held a Wednesday picnic hike granted as a half-holiday by Superintendent Madison Hall. They traveled after noon to Guy Dansby’s pasture, shared lunch, and were chaperoned by Mrs. Dansby. Two Cars Collide in Front of Dr Hunnicutt Residence

A car from Austin driven by unknown persons and a car driven by Joe Pasler from a tailor shop between Waldrop Store and Metropolitan Barber Shop collided in front of the Dr Hunnicutt residence last night around eight oclock. No injuries but both cars were damaged. Pasler’s car had one wheel broken and was quickly removed. The other car remained in the Hunnicutt driveway. Street parking on both sides left a narrow passage as both vehicles attempted to pass simultaneously.
