Ann Haskel plans a grand party to outshine Lodge crowd and restore a decayed mountain estate. John Herbert fears ridicule yet supports his mother’s bid to prove value beyond class lines as Ann’s guests arrive to judge her bold move.
A large Edge crowd enjoyed a Sunday night singing with many strong performers. Notables include Rev. Ham and family visiting, twin brothers Clifford and Clifton Barnett delivering guitar songs, and the community hosting a singing school under Bert Phillips with fifty four students enrolled.
Frances Mooney daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J W Mooney fractured her right arm when she fell from a wagon during a visit to Iola. She was taken to Bryan for setting the fracture and was reported comfortable the next day.
Chief of Police K. T. Tillis along with Night Policeman Lee Norwood and Motorcycle Policeman Howard Lee attend a short course for law enforcement officers at Texas A and M College that began Monday morning.
About 50 farmers at R. H. Smith farm learned from E. R. Eudaly how trench silos provide simple low‑cost feed with no fire risk and weather‑flexible filling. The notice also covers 4‑H achievement tours, farm records contest, phosphate orders, and upcoming camp plans.

The Smetana school district installs a Delco lighting system for the school and teacherage. The school board includes President John Kalinec, Joe Holik, and Sam Picolo. Superintendent E. J. Watts, Principal L. E. Pearson, and teachers Mrs. John Buchanan, Mrs. Fila Merka, Miss Ruby Wallin, and Miss Annie Sebesta are named. The school has just earned a standardization certificate placing it on par with rural schools of this ranking.
Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock Monday at Beckham cemetery in Tabor for Ted McAliley two year old son of Mr and Mrs Roy McAliley. Rev R L Brown of the College Baptist church officiated. He died Sunday night and is survived by his parents and one sister Jane with relatives from Comanche attending.
Residents attended Memorial Day at Bald Prairie and a centennial event. Several families, including the Nash and Curik households, visited Bryan Huntsville and Hearne for summer plans and schooling. Church meetings with Rev. H E Kelley were reported, and visits from Misses Scasta Hint Nash Hill were noted.
Brazos county residents seeking WPA jobs should apply at the Bryan relief office in the Astin building over Reid grocery. The office opens Thursday and Friday this week and Monday through Wednesday weekly thereafter, closed Thursday Friday and Saturday while applications are checked, with hours 8 to 12 and 1 to 5.
Regular preacher Millican Rev Hooter filled his Sunday appointment. Decatur resident Mrs C E Jamerson spent the weekend with her father J W Burrow as her son brought his boy to the A and M College short course. Mr and Mrs M Sawyers and daughter Norma went to Hot Springs Ark for a month for hot baths. Mr and Mrs J S Syms welcomed a baby girl Peggy Ann. Erin Simpson visiting the Burrows and L B Simpson families. Mrs Malcolm McGregor and children returned from a visit with her father in Lufkin. A crowd of young folks motor to Galveston for a pleasure trip and reported a wonderful time. Mrs K T Williams is ill but improving. Mr and Mrs Jack Cowen and son of Deenville visit D C Cowen and family. Mrs Maggie Stousland of Galveston visiting her mother Emma Bradley. Mr and Mrs L M Dixon of Navasota in town Sunday. Mr and Mrs R W Baker and family of Baytown spent last Sunday with his mother Liz Baker then left for Dallas to visit.
Congressman Nat Patton of Crockett appears renominated in the seventh district after Sunday returns. Texas Election Bureau tabulations show Patton 18 467, Frizell 8938, Stone 7851 with one county left to count.
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin H. Phipps of Houston were injured when their motorcycle struck a horse crossing Highway 6 just south of the A and M College. The horse died instantly and the couple received flesh wounds but no broken bones. They stayed in Bryan briefly for treatment before continuing recuperation at home.
Parents of Brazos County students who want a school transfer for the coming year must file applications before Saturday August 1 per county superintendent Mrs W E Neeley.
County school board will meet Saturday at the office of the county superintendent in the courthouse to discuss transportation of school children for the coming year. Trustees with school problems are invited. Deputy State Superintendent Charles B. Barclay will attend to assist in solving transportation issues.
A Sunday birthday gathering honored Mrs. Albert Schultz of Steep Hollow for her fifty third birthday. Attendees included her family from Steep Hollow Bry an Kurten and Weimer with numerous children and relatives joining in the celebration.
Miss Leila Palasota daughter of Mr and Mrs P J Palasota married Thomas D Rotello of Navasota Sunday at St Anthony's Catholic Church Rev B Brain officiated flowers of calla lilies and ferns adorned the altar and pews The couple's reception followed at the Palasota home then a two day wedding trip to Monterrey Mexico and other points in Mexico and Texas before settling in Navasota with gifts on display and many out of town guests present.
A Texas wildlife short course gathering near Normangee highlighted the Leon game restoration project and the need for 40 000 acres of habitat for deer and turkey. Speakers included S E Cavitt and Seth Taylor with praise for Leon Brazos Grimes counties and Navasota bottoms habitat.
Bryan friends report the death of Mrs. W. H. McKenzie of Austin wife of Dr. W. H. McKenzie pastor of the University Baptist church She had been ill for months but not bedbound until recently Funeral services were held today in Austin.
The Houstonian notes Margaret Beason of Bryan, daughter of County Agent C. L. Beason, is elected secretary in the Deans office. Former yearbook editor, she will receive her degree this summer.
