A. W. Kinnard Sr writes that Green Pastures A satire on religion presents a striking view of how humans shape belief. The column notes how religious ideas among deep south negroes reflect daily life and hint at color and texture in faith. The elder preacher dozes as the younger explains.
Mr and Mrs Bill Wimberley return from a two week trip to Shreveport the Centennial Exposition in Dallas and Alpine with Mt. Locke Observatory improvements noted in the Davis mountains. Mr and Mrs J G Black now reside in Bryan and run Black s Cafe on North Main Street. Mr and Mrs L L Fouraker and son Lawrence depart for Dallas to attend the Texas Centennial.
Cliff Haley, a Black man, charged with murdering his wife Pearl Haley on October 21 1952 and fatally shooting Henry Andrews on the same night, was brought to Louisville Kentucky for trial after an 18 month search. Sheriff Roy Nunn located him and Deputy Sheriff H P Franklin Motorcycle Policeman Howard Lee and Hudson Myers escorted him back. Haley had left his wife prior to the shootings and ambushed them as they neared the porch of her La Salle Hotel housekeeper home. He disappeared after the killings and was jailed Tuesday afternoon.
The W. M. Sparks move into a two story ten room brick veneer home in Oakwood south of College Station while Dr. and Mrs. Sid Perry relocate to Cavitt's Oak Lawn off Highway 6 between Bryan and College. The Hanover apartments, brick veneer with six and five room units, are now open and occupied. Architects Jack Atkinson and W. Olin Sanders supervised design and valuation.
James Daniels a 31 year old Delta Corporation aviator from Monroe Louisiana crashed while dusting cotton on the George G Chance plantation in Burleson county. His plane wing struck a six foot stump hidden by weeds causing the craft to autorotate and burst into flames. Daniels was burned to death and his wife accompanied the body to Laurel Mississippi. He was among several aviators dusting cotton this season but this was the first fatality.
Bryan friends report the death Sunday of Phil Mosley son of Mr and Mrs C P Mosley formerly of Bryan and Allen Academy. He suffered a broken neck and paralysis while swimming in Wichita Falls last Tuesday and died Sunday. Funeral services were held in Jacksonville with several Bryan residents in attendance. He had won scholastic and athletic honors at Lon Morris College and would have been co captain of the Lon Morris football team this fall with Emory Deason.
The liquor control board cautioned permit holders that liquor and beer sales are prohibited during the Democratic primary on July 25. Beer taverns must close during polling hours from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Liquor package stores must stay shut from midnight Friday until 7 a.m. Monday.
Funeral services were held in Normangee for Henry Luther Woodyard the 10 month old son of Mr and Mrs Jimmie Woodyard. The child died Sunday night and was taken to Normangee for burial by Mc Culloch Dansby for the interment.
F. E. Lichte has taken on the role of Extension cotton gin specialist starting July 1 and will improve ginning practices in the state. He will coordinate with other cotton experts and agencies to tackle cotton problems and will attend a one day conference at Stoneville Mississippi July 13 to learn new ginning methods.
Edward Arch Freeman 63 years 11 months 7 days died at his son and family home on south College Avenue Sunday evening at 7 30 after months of illness. He had come to Bryan for a visit and previously lost his wife five months ago. The body was shipped to Terrell for funeral services today at 4 o'clock. He is survived by his son W C Freeman and grandson Clyde Freeman Jr both of Bryan.
A Brazos County farmer asked County Agent C. L. Beason where he could sell his body, citing a Madison County farmer who reportedly sold his cadaver to a medical school. Beason, versed in farm markets, said he knew no outlets for cadavers and could offer no guidance.
Excerpts from the Centennial Year Farmers Short Course at Texas A M College cover winter grazing with small grains. R H Stansel of the Angleton Experiment Station recommends Italian rye grass and oats for year round pasturage. Miss Minnie Eldridge urges 4 H Club girls to value workmanship and color in quilting and pillow making.
A Bryan church was entered Sunday night likely via the back door to the furnace room. The intruder left disappointed after ransacking desks and drawers. only postage stamps were missing from the office lock box, while the rest of the church interior remained undamaged.
San Marcos July 21 Bert S. Candler Jr. 23 son of a San Antonio furniture merchant was fatally injured in an automobile accident near the city Monday. A another occupant was badly hurt in the crash leaving authorities investigating the cause and condition of the injured party.
Bryan residents and neighboring Robertson and Limestone communities gathered at Calvert athletic field for a rally supporting Luther A. Johnson of Corsicana seeking reelection to Congress. About 700 attendees heard criticisms from Johnson opponents Hollis Frazier Noble Cook and George Butler. Johnson defended his record including aid to farmers veterans and Texas A&M College. Attendees included Lee Simmons Judge Henry A Bush and supporters George A. Adams Mills P. Walker and others.
Bryan City Schools complete staffing for 1936-37 with 69 teachers across six schools. Four Bowie instructors join the ranks, replacing married teachers Mozelle Vick Elizabeth Baird and Virginia Manning, and boosting enrollment with added public school music as a part-time subject. Christine Lichte Lola Rosier Minnie Ferguson and Annette Bradfield are the new Bowie staff.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 4 p.m. at the old House cemetery near Edge for James House 66 of Edge who died Friday night after a lingering illness. Rev E Stern Phinney of Bryan officiated. Sanders McCullough directed arrangements. He was born in Brazos County and lived in Edge his whole life working as a farmer and respected citizen. He was predeceased by his wife and survived by two daughters Mrs P R Wilson of Edge and Mrs Will Henry of Bryan, one brother George House, seven grandsons Milton Wilbur Doward Henry Leslie Oran Melvin Wilson and Leroy Hair. Pallbearers were Jim Cloud Frank Boviskie E B Moore Ben Powers W S House and Reagan Warren.
The State agricultural conservation committee proposes weed and grass eradication as a soil conserving practice in Texas. The Secretary of Agriculture accepted the plan. farmers may receive a soil conserving payment per acre for eradicating Johnson grass Bermuda grass nut grass blue weed and bindweed on badly infested crop land, with location filed with the County Committee before work begins.
City commissioners opened bids at a called meeting and awarded the audit contract to Frank Wilcox of Waco, a certified public accountant, for 167.50 dollars after five bids were submitted. Wilcox had previously performed the city's audits.
Gov James V Allred will speak at the Kurten school dedication at 12 15 PM Thursday according to W S Barron. He will be in Houston Wednesday night and be met at Navasota by Jess Gammon then driven to Kurten for the barbecue before returning to Bryan to catch the Sunbeam north to Corsicana.
The worst wind and thunder storm in years affected central and northwest Texas with 65 mph winds and a 200 mile rain band. Thousands of trees toppled in Dallas and Gainesville as damage neared $100,000 to the Centennial Exposition. no lives were lost and heat was broken by the storm.
R. C. Franks was sworn in as a Bryan city commissioner in a special Tuesday election and inducted at a Wednesday night meeting. He succeeds Wilson Bradley as postmaster and will oversee the finance and taxation portfolio. The Frankses then left for Providence Rhode Island to attend the Lions International convention where he serves as District 28S governor.
Second expense report filed with County Clerk shows widespread spending by candidates. Listings include J M Ferguson 141.70. George B Butler 1513. Noble Cook 1146.75. George P Edge 117. Paul Dansby 162.50. Roy Nunn 303.05. plus many others with fees.
The 1820 quilt owned by Mrs. M. C. Atkins is a hand stitched heirloom from her great grandmother Mary Thomas Reed wife of Georgia surgeon Dr. Reed. Made of multicolored scraps, it features five stars with hexagonal pieces totaling over 11 000 in the central star. Urged to donate to the Texas Centennial display in Dallas.
A WPA education survey is underway in Brazos County supervised by George Tipton District 5 with temporary Huntsville offices. Three workers are employed to assess buildings equipment sanitary conditions and numbers of teachers and pupils for use by the state board to guide school improvements. Tipton expects completion across ten counties in about ten weeks.
Adolph Liner lost fifty dollars in a whiskey hunt that led to drunken driving charges against him and to arrests of Seth Holmes and Jesse Mae Foster for misdemeanor theft. Liner says he chased a wallet grab by a woman at a negro house. Holmes knocked him down and the money disappeared. Helmes was nabbed at another house and the woman in Hearne.
Weldon Stone, previously on the Texas A and M faculty, is added to the summer instructor roster at Southwest Texas State Teachers College. He will teach in the English department.
The Bryan Board of Equalization reported a $52,865 increase in total valuations for taxation, rising to $4,622,865 from $4,570,000 a year earlier. The tax rate stands at $1.50 per $100, with the city commission to decide on its continuation while reviewing the budget prepared by City Manager R. G. Williams.
Ed O’Neal of Chicago Illinois, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, urged cooperation between farmers, Land Grant Colleges, Experiment Stations, Extension Services and the U S Department of Agriculture to craft and execute agricultural programs locally and nationally. The speech opened the Centennial Ye Farmers Short Course at Texas A and M College, followed by a full day of group meetings, demonstrations, and talks by noted experts. Officers of the Texas Beekeepers Association were elected, and the group plans to host an International Beekeepers meeting in San Antonio November 23 24 and 25 attracting 1500 to 2000 attendees.
J R McCrary of Calvert and Field, manager, attended the stockholders meeting of the American Cotton Co op in New Orleans. McCrary was named to a four member board for possible changes in the association and its subsidiaries. President N C Williams announced the group aims to handle two million bales this year.
Workmen began remodeling the Eugen Edge and Son store front Monday morning. The display windows will be enlarged and other improvements made. During construction customers are asked to use the 25th street entrance.
