Visitors to the Texas Centennial praise the lighting, educational value, and portrayal of Texas history and development. Many say the Texas show exceeds the Century of Progress and the San Diego Exposition and Texans should visit first.
County commissioners were re elected in Precincts One Two and Three. In the 4th precinct a runoff pits Commissioner R Pat Patterson against John M Moore with Claude Buchanan third. Moore polled 783 votes Patterson 1032 and Buchanan 546. District tallies show Conrad Wehrman and Smetana among others with small margins in Precinct Two and Three.
Allen Military Academy announces completion of a new hall to replace the fire damaged Rayson Hall and the installation of a steam heating plant. The academy hospital has been remodeled and rated among the best prep schools in the Southwest as enrollments are expected to peak at record levels.
Jno M Lawrence says the sale contract for the Possum Kingdom dam power, first of 13 Brazos watershed projects, may be let in October. He notes Texas Power and Light may buy all power produced and negotiations continue with WPA road work finishing around Oct 1 under Army supervision.
Dave Jolly won the 4th precinct constable race with a 334 vote majority over rivals Buddy Knowles and Jim Welch. Ballot totals: Jolly 878 at City Hall, 863 at Court House, 532 at Fire Station. Knowles 290, 182, 263. Welch 106, 43, 50.
Brazos County voters cast 4029 votes in Saturdays primary, with the sheriff race tight between W R Allen and A S Ware. Allen won by 111 votes, carrying nine boxes to Wares five, with narrow margins in City Hall and Court House boxes. Guy Harris captured a decisive victory for tax assessor collector, beating D Paul Dansby and Walter Higgs by large margins. Judge J M Ferguson defeated A S McSwain by 612 votes, carrying all but two boxes. In the congress race George B Butler led nine boxes to Luther A Johnson's five.
W. J. Newcomb, about 62, died Monday night in Houston after a stroke. Survived by wife, daughter Lelia Maude Nelson, three brothers A. A. Newcomb R. B. Newcomb J. T. Newcomb, all of Bryan, and two sisters Mamie De Hart Hillsboro and Mattie Gilliamberg Waco. native of Brazos county spent early life there then moved to Houston 50 years ago. Funeral plans pending for Wednesday.
J Alton York of Giddings advances to a runoff with Senator Albert Stone for the 14th district state senate seat after returns from six counties show Stone leading in Brazos and Washington, while York dominates Lee and trails in Robertson Bastrop and Burleson.
A revival meeting is in progress at the Harvey Baptist church. Pastor Rev. E. E. Jarrington invites the community to attend and join the gathering.
John Frank Womble, longtime Bryanite and former Longview Chamber assistant, is promoted to secretary manager of the Tyler Chamber of Commerce. He is the son of Henry and Mrs. Womble, a Stephen F. Austin graduate, a former A&M student, and previously served with Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce. He previously handled cotton issues for Gregg County and succeeds Roy J. Leffingwell in Tyler.
Congressman Luther A Johnson declared a district win of 11 968 votes over four opponents. Total counts show Johnson 29 051, Butler 6 957, Cook 4 585, Burleson 3 571, White 1 970 across Navarre Limestone Freestone Leon Hill Ellis Brazos Robertson counties with Johnson leading in all areas.
The Treasury Department awarded a $1,066,700 contract Monday to E. L. Martin of Dallas to construct the narcotic farm at Fort Worth Texas. The project includes administration clinical ward maximum custody ward nurses home and roads with a 245 day completion timeline.
George J. Lacy of Houston, director of the Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory, spoke to the Bryan Lions Tuesday noon about modern methods in detecting deception and keeping pace with evolving criminals. He noted training, equipment like lie detectors and fingerprinting, and cited a Calvert murder case.
Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce directors considered terms for the Southwest Telephone Company renewal set for September. President George G. Chance named a special committee to aid negotiations while discussing rural electrification and a proposed 100 watt broadcast station with a $10 000 cost and 60 mile radius.
Completion of the Grimes county count confirms a runoff between W T McDonald of Brazos and Richard H Barry of Grimes. In Grimes county totals Barry 1028, McDonald 114, Thomas 1126, Edge 124. In Brazos county Edge 1237, McDonald 2010, Thomas 163, Barry 449. Overall Barry 1477, Thomas 1289, McDonald 2124, Edge 1361.
