Brooks Stevenson Jr the 10 year old son of Mr and Mrs J Brooks Stevenson will go to Houston next Monday and will enter Camp Ross Sterling for two weeks. The Scardino family visiting relatives in Houston attended a barbecue in Mumford. E A Miller and family hosted visitors from New Ulm and Davis California at Haswell Drive summer house confirms.
Supporters of the Butler-for- Congress club formalized their organization at a district court room meeting. President John S Caldwell announced the executive committee members and stated committees for Finance Speakers Publicity and Ladies with named local officials and supporters. Butler plans two Sunday meetings after touring the Sixth district and highlighting his legislative record including first term service on the appropriations committee and liquor traffic role.
Dr T O Walton and officials foresee 4000 plus registrations at Texas A M College this fall based on advance numbers 43 percent higher than last year. Last year’s total neared 3500 with a projected gain of 500 or more amid better business and agricultural conditions.
Brazos county Red Cross chapter finishes a June 29 to July 9 first aid training at A and M College to enable stations on highways around Bryan. Dr. R M Searcy and M L Cashion led the effort with Paul J Merrill as instructor.
At a Brazos County meeting the County Agent stated that local and county committee men are USDA employees and cannot participate in political campaigns. Political activity in any election or in support of any party or measure is prohibited by policy of the College and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Mrs. Mary Irwin Barron aged 65 died at the family farm in Wellborn after a two month illness. Funeral at Minter Springs cemetery conducted by Rev J P Brown with McCulloch Dansby directing. She was born in Arkansas and lived in Wellborn 25 years. Survived by four sons T Joe Barron Sugarland C B Barron Houston W H Barron Hobby Y N Barron Hobby and two daughters Mrs Joe Norwood Wellborn and Mrs Laura Straub Wellborn.
Kurten school board president Otto Plagens announces a July 23 dedication for the new Kurten schoolhouse. The barbecue, postponed from July 1, will be held with opening inspections, a dedicatory program, speeches by local and state candidates, a ball game, and music by the Terrell Orchestra of Bryan.
Bryan friends mourn W. Bertrand Connelly of Austin whose body was found with a gunshot wound behind his Floral shop. Connelly lived in Bryan as a child with his parents and will be remembered there. A Bryan communion table gift plate lists his name among donors from the Sunday school class taught by Mrs. Dona Carnes.
James Byrd, a Black man, opened fire at a Sunday gathering on the Mike Perrone farm injuring Antonio Ramos who later died at Wilkerson Memorial Clinic. Mike Ramatis remains seriously ill with chest wounds and pneumonia while Frank Martinis was treated and released. Authorities charged Byrd with serious assault and investigated motive. a public safety item was recovered after a search.
Moderate temperatures with slight rainfall prevailed through the past week. The maximum was 2 degrees recorded Saturday and the minimum 71 during the first three days. Rainfall totaled 0.51 inches.
The Smetana 4-H club held Achievement Day with members presenting yearlong goals and projects. Ruby Kre built shelves costing 3 dollars and sold plums. Ella Mae Holick harvested 1125 pounds of vegetables and canned 285 foods. Lillie Mae Habarta renovated a corner attic bedroom and sold 29 dollars of produce plus 89.90 from fryers, totaling 108.90. Dot Marie Sramek improved the yard adding 25 plants and eight rose bushes, with father building a new rock path.
A three year old Bryan boy was bitten by a cat last Saturday. Head examination at Austin found the cat rabid. Dr. R Henry Harrison Jr city health officer warns residents to give anti rabies treatment to dogs and cats and take extra precautions to protect young children.
Lesser Newton, secretary treasurer of the Bryan Production Credit association, said a Central Texas group’s meeting at Waco on July 8 and 9 showed more members and rising business. Directors from across the region reported satisfactory progress as farmers and stockmen warm to the new credit system.
Chicago news notes cool weather and rain head to the heat baked north central states. Forecasters say the flying millions won t be fooled this time. A heat wave 12 days long has caused over 2000 deaths and about 1 billion dollars in crop damage.
Eight indictments, all felonies, were returned by the Robertson county grand jury this week. Among them are two murder cases and a charge against an elderly man for assaulting a 13 year old white girl in Hearne, as reported to Judge W. C. Davis.
W. S. Higgs reports a ruling from the attorney general permitting residents who came of age since January 1, 1935 in cities under 10 000 to vote without exemption certificates if they meet residence and other qualifications. Bryan qualifies under this population category and local adults attaining majority since January 1 last year may vote without pull tax receipts or exemption certificates.
A barbecue supper at Reliance Saturday night at 8 p m will raise proceeds for the Reliance church. Candidates for precinct and county office are to speak, providing a forum for local election discussion.
The Brazos County Red Cross sent Junior Life Saving test sheets to the Midwestern Branch in St Louis after life saving and first aid exams at Camp Arrowmoon. Scores ranged from 84 to 98 with participants from Bryan Hearne Franklin and other towns.
Joe Merka, prominent farmer, explains Rye was once Ryefield named for a field planted to eye. He notes post office rules caused the name change and traces ownership to Mrs Henry and the Kopecky estate. Also urged are soil terracing 4 H club work and community teamwork for progress.
Sheriff Roy Nunn reports two colored men arrested Friday in Brazos County for stealing two horses from John Alva on June 18. The horses recovered near the John Worthington place in Burleson County after being sold by Worthington, who is serving a two year federal sentence for liquor violations. The suspects remain jailed in Brazos County.
Richards Texas July 14 Hunt for Roy Curry Hubbard City murderer and kidnapper continued Monday around Bedias 35 miles northwest of Richards after he forced two couples to drive him and swapped cars multiple times. Curry sentenced to life and 25 years earlier began serving in March 1935.
Voters showing interest in the July 25 primary are filing absentee ballot applications. By Monday night 42 county residents planned to be out of the county on election day and had both filed for and voted their absentee ballots with County Clerk Frank Worsham.
Texas A and M College reports a new full-session summer enrollment record with 1,292 distinct students, 209 added on the first day of the second term. Registration continues through Thursday, with term exams slated for August 21-22.
Elijah Plesant and Ivy Lee Hickman along with Robert Anderson and Helen Roland secured marriage licenses.
The Texas Fire Insurance Commission reduced Bryan’s key rate by one cent to 16 cents citing water main improvements. The city awarded Kennersom Brothers of Dallas a $7484 contract to install a vacuum steam heating plant at Stephen F. Austin High School. Extensions to water and sewer lines, additions to the city limits, and a review of the budget were discussed as city officials adjourned to meet again next week.
Dr E P Humbert left Station Monday for a two week inspection trip to review soil conservation projects across the state. His itinerary includes Madison Nacogdoches Tyler Lindale Gate Land Ft Worth Dublin and more. A short course runs July 26 to August 8 at the College, with contacts among conservation experts appearing on the program.
The Bryan public schools closed the summer session today under Supt. S. M. Brown. More than 60 students attended the sessions, the largest for a Bryan summer program, and reports will be issued Friday. There were no closing exercises, as only students who completed work took part in the end term ceremonies.
