The hospital in Bryan, run for years by the late Dr W H Oli ay, is sold to Dr B Ehlinger and Dr R B Grant Jr for operation by the Order of St Francis sisters. They plan to take over about January 1 1935 and will staff with physicians from Caldwell Calvert Hearne Madisonville and Normangee to ensure continuity.
Alex Harris son of W. W. Harris of Bryan has been named chief highway engineer for Mississippi. A 1920 graduate of A and M College, he has worked in the highway department for years and served as assistant chief for two years. He will be stationed in Jackson.
A Texas Highway Commission delegation from Bryan Mexia Groesbeck Calvert urged closing gaps on the X All route from the Grimes county line to a six mile concrete stretch south of Groesbeck. Officials indicated support and possible funding from a 12 million federal allocation to complete the all weather Houston to Dallas corridor.
Warrants charging the operators of Sweet Shop No. 2 and the Baron's Tavern near College Avenue and Highway No. 6 allege disturbing the peace with loud music late at night. Complaints signed by Hugh Looney and H. L. Whitley, turned over to Sheriff J. H. Reed. County Attorney Oak McKenzie cited potential injunction to curb noise if needed.
At a called Bry an Pastors Association meeting, officials discussed gambling reports in Bry an especially machine gaming. The group denounced gaming machines as a nuisance harming the community and youth and pledged to support law enforcement efforts.

The Robertson county grand jury indicted Ishmeal Orange for the murder of Helen Dexter a hitchhiker from Centerville Kentucky whose body was found weeks ago on the Missouri Pacific tracks near Valley Junction They were seen together at the station and were said to have argued Orange has not been seen since the body was discovered Earlier reports suggested a train fatality but a bullet wound was found in the breast Orange reportedly has a Kentucky prison record and a dishonorable U S Navy discharge.
Albany July 17 The court of appeals ruled that Anna Antonio a mother of three and convicted husband slayer must die in the electric chair at Sing Sing prison unless Governor Lehman intervenes Her execution was set for August
Grimes county merchant H R Jones was killed at his Bedias area store near midnight Friday by Ira Rector 28 who confessed Saturday He used an ax after buying tomatoes razor blades and crackers Rector said he needed money and was held in Huntsville for trial Rector indicated the crime followed by a missing cigar box of cash Five children survive Jones with relatives in Bryan Huntsville and Houston The funeral was held in Mooresville Sunday
In Lufkin 92 year old G W Fisher wed Minnie Tonie in a Sunday ceremony by Rev Polly Durham. Fisher, among the town’s oldest residents, previously lost his wife last year and already has 10 children and 35 grandchildren.
San Francisco endures a grim scene with tanks machine guns and barricades along Market Street and Embarcadero as residents gaze at a city in fear and disruption far from its usual lively pace after a night of unrest and martial displays.
Discovery of a man’s skeleton with crushed skull and knotted restraints was found about a mile from the old Bryan Hearne road. Clothing and a book identified the remains as Ivy Fair, Bryan negro missing since last April. County Attorney John R Grace leads the investigation and suspects a motive beyond robbery likely a grudge killing or silencing of Fair.
Brazos county relief headquarters confirms an extra quota of 15 youths for a civil conservation camp at Conroe will be drawn from Bryan rather than rural sections. Applicants must come from communities of at least 2 500 population and the July 23 dispatch to Conroe is noted in the briefing.
A small grass fire on South Bryan avenue near noon caused a routine fire department response. No damage was reported.
Myrtle Lee Harrison the 16 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs J C Harrison who disappeared last Wednesday night around 11 was located in Dallas at the home of friends. Her father said she was well and had apparently reached Dallas without harm but gave no details of her travel.
Huntsville Alabama July 17 Upwards of 10 000 workers in 15 cotton mills joined a statewide textile strike Five mills closed here and another awaited the result of a conference with operators Mills at Gadsden Jasper Gordon Albertville Guntersville and Birmingham closed as shifts changed John Dean International representative of the United Textile Workers of America said over 22 000 workers would be on strike by 3 o clock p m
Bryan loses R A McDaniels after his resignation as Montgomery Ward manager dating to the store's opening on April 11 1930. B S McCleary from Austin takes over the Bryan store after serving as Ward district supervisor in Louisiana and Mississippi. He expects to move his family next week with A E McCourt assisting at the inauguration.
Tony Barcelona informs of his father Charlie Barcelona’s death at age 60 in Los Angeles California after being run over by a car. Funeral set for Thursday in Los Angeles with interment beside his wife who died three years earlier. Surviving are three sons Bryan Frank Sam and five daughters including Mary Salvato Congetta Salvato Josephine Alie Angelina and Virginia Barcelona. Tony cannot attend the funeral. friends extend sympathy.
Mrs. Charles Mauthel sustained cuts and bruises Sunday when the car carrying her husband and daughter, driven by the daughter, collided with a machine driven by A. E. Mize. Both vehicles were badly damaged.
Mrs. Cora Cooner Williams wife of J M Williams died Wednesday afternoon at her daughter's home on Baker avenue after a long illness. Funeral services were held Thursday at the First Methodist church with Rev Jesse C Thompson officiating assisted by Dr L B Elrod. Burial was in Rector cemetery Rock Prairie area. She was born April 19 1861 in Panola county and was 73 years old. She had lived in Brazos county 65 years. She married John Monroe Williams November 15 1879. Survived by her husband four sons Otho and Offa Williams of Wellborn R Orin Williams and J M Williams Jr of Houston two daughters Mrs W P Powers Bryan and Mrs J Walter Smith Navasota eight grandchildren and other relatives.
Following Brazos county's listing in the drought relief area an extra CCC quota of 15 youths was assigned. Mrs. J. L. Brock, county administrator, says applications are now at relief headquarters. Earlier this month 20 youths from the county have already joined CCC camps in this state and the new allotment will be sent as applications are approved.
Will begin in Brazos county Wednesday as part of the federal drought relief effort. George W. Barnes, Texas drought relief director, announced at a meeting at Texas A and M College. The program will roll out in several nearby counties, delayed in others by need for veterinarians and cattle appraisers. More than 150 officials and stockmen attended, with Brazos leaders including County Judge A S McSwain and County Agent C L Benson present.
Funeral services were held in Bryan for Joe Cortemelia 25 whose death occurred Monday night in an automobile accident at Forney. He was killed instantly and his body arrived in Bryan this afternoon. He was survived by his father Tony Cortemelia of Westbrook Robertson county and six sisters and two brothers. The family formerly lived in Brazoria county.
