Rural communities face growing desperation due to drought as farmers and tenants struggle to supply workers and basic needs. The Bryan Booster calls for drought relief to Brazos County, urging farm agents and relief officials to pursue aid to ease hunger and layoffs.
Mrs. F. C. Birdwell leaves for Fort Worth to visit relatives and later her son Captain M. J. Birdwell at a soil erosion camp near Rusk. Mr. and Mrs. Willis Edge of Yeager Hardware take a vacation in Bryan. Mrs. Lb. Johnson travels to Mount Pleasant to visit her son Luther. Mrs. C. L. Baker goes to Palestine to meet her son. Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Regenbrecht and son Douglas enjoy a weekend with relatives in Corpus Christi.
Temperatures stayed at 100 or more every day last week with a high of 103 on Saturday and a low of 74 on Saturday night. No rainfall occurred. readings show Day high and Night low values across the period.
Miss Clara Calhoun, on leave from Bryan high school to work for the United States consul general in Hamburg, Germany, will return August 23 to resume her commercial department duties. She plans two weeks in southern Germany, visiting Dresden and Munich, then Ireland at Killarney before sailing home on the George Washington to New York.
County judges from six counties met Tuesday with Congressman Luther A. Johnson and C. B. Martin at Texas A and M College to discuss drouth conditions. Also present was Dr. C. W. Warburton of agriculture department in charge of relief work. Continued on page 3.
From Corsicana dated July 7 Cong. Luther A. Johnson was advised that Dr. C W Warburton head of relief for the Agriculture Department placed Brazos and all counties in his district in the secondary drought relief area today. Counties will be entitled to relief facilities except cattle purchases.
A Nashville Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway freight train derailed near La Vergne Tennessee as it moved from Nashville to Chattanooga. At least eight hoboes died and many others were injured with feared more bodies trapped in wreckage.
The Bryan Municipal Playgrounds held its first paying members meeting with about 100 attendees. Plans for expanded services and popular recreation features were discussed. a women’s bridge committee from Bryan and College Station will organize sessions, with a general member committee and special event subcommittees to follow.
Baltimore jurist Judge Eugene O Dunne voided the marriage between Virginia Classen Diatmant and John Bradon Bronner, ruling a woman may change her mind anytime about marriage. The decision frames the female mind body and will as not bound by prior contract.
Members of the Evangelical church at Kurten announce their annual barbecue at the schoolhouse. Food includes beef goat pork mutton and chicken served at noon. Marek's orchestra of Cameron will provide music for the Thursday night dance.
Absentee voting for the July 28 primaries begins this week for Brazos County residents. Qualified voters away on election day may obtain an affidavit and ballot from the county clerk. Absent residents may request ballots by mail and must return them promptly. Ballots are forwarded to precinct officials, with the period ending July 24. State law allows voting between 20 days and 3 days before the election.
Clarence Nemir of Austin and his UT student orchestra sailed from New York on July 5 for Havre aboard the French line motorship LaFayette. For three years Nemir has taken the group to Europe, performing on ship and in European cities during tea dances and other entertainments.
Montgomery Ward presents nine soaps at the Bryan store with an introductory sale starting Thursday and running through the week. Special bargains and low prices accompany a display of brands from Baby Soap to Hardwater Soap, highlighting lather in hard water.
The six lynchings in the first half of 1934 were all of African Americans. Offenses included wounding, rape, attempted rape, associating with white women, and striking. Florida Kentucky Tennessee Texas each reported one case and Mississippi had two.
Lee Arthur McKinley pleaded not guilty at arraignment on a charge of disturbing the peace at a Negro Holy Roller service Sunday night. His case was set for Thursday.
Harvey D. Watson and Melvin Dansby were chosen to represent the Bryan chapter of F F A at the State F F A meeting in Huntsville July 23 and 24. The Huntsville district will hold its summer encampment the same dates. Most Bryan members will attend. Planning for a playground baseball team practice at Travis School Wednesday at 9 a.m. was also arranged. Watson presided with listed members and visitors attending.
Manuel Garcia is in critical condition at Bryan hospital after being cut by Louis Lopez in the city’s northwest Sunday evening. Authorities say the assault followed a dispute over a woman. Lopez fled but was captured by Sheriff J. H. Reed and jailed. A murder or assault with intent to murder charge hinges on Garcia’s outcome.
Alabama textile workers voted to strike with about 30 000 workers participating. A Birmingham meeting will decide the strike date. Demands call for a 20 hour reduction in the work week and a minimum of 12 dollars per week for 30 hours, restoring the 40 hour week code wage.
Austin July 10. All growers of state certified seed plan to meet at College Station July 20 to create a certified seed producers association. R V Miller chief of field seed certification division said it would be the first meeting of all growers of certified cotton sorghum oats and corn seed. The group aims to promote breeding and use of better seed by Texas farmers.
Mrs Lee J Rountree editor of the Bryan Eagle was re elected president of the Former Round Rock Academy Students Association at the annual reunion held Sunday in Round Rock. She could not attend due to a family medical emergency in El Paso Texas where her mother Mrs T C Mitchell resides.
Two men were arrested Saturday morning by Chief T. K. Tillis and Constable Horace Reed for shoplifting at the Gerson Inc store and jailed in the county jail.
Curtis notes Vinson publicity director of the College in the Far East has sent entertaining letters about a Honolulu stop. The party included three college students who won the annual cotton trip and Prof J S Mugford. He describes tropical vegetation, Waikiki surf, newspaper visits, a Chinese restaurant dinner, and an Oahu drive. Plans include banquets in Tokio Kobe and other points with about 35 days ahead in Japan Chosen and Manchukuo.
Miss Maurice Searcy daughter of Mrs C A Searcy earned two placements in the Who's Who contests at Camp Dantzler near Hattiesburg Mississippi in summer events. She tied for second in the final popularity vote just one vote behind the winner and was named best swimmer among 32 girls and nine counselors.
Obituary notice for Daniel C. Vick of Bryan Texas who died Sunday at a local hospital at age 75. He arrived in Brazos county in 1888 and owned Vick planing mills. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church. Funeral held at his son Roy M. Vick’s home on College Avenue conducted by Dr. W H Andrew with Psalm 23 and a hymn performed by the church quartet.
Charles Le Turne Jr. of Harlingen, 15, landed a seven foot one inch sailfish five miles off Port Isabel on Monday. The fish was fought for 20 minutes before it was brought to the gaff, and records indicate it was the first sailfish ever caught off the Texas gulf coast.
Members of the Auxiliary of Earl Graham post No. 159 Amer ican Legion met Friday night at the Legion home with good attendance. Treasurer Mrs Luke Patranella reported finances satisfactory while President Mrs Anton Krenek conducted the session. A. S. McSwain announced plans to recruit Girl Scout leaders and a nominating committee including Mrs L J Falgeau Mrs M M Erskine and Mrs Raymond Jones was named for next election. Erskine also reported ongoing Child Welfare committee work.
Lieutenant A C Thornton head of Houston police homicide squad urges Texas legislation to classify attempted death by own action as a felony. He says such acts waste police time and reduce actual suicides, noting habitual cases where people dive into water despite rescue hopes. Local lawyer Tom Branch cites no US state has such a statute.
The Department of Agriculture places US cotton in cultivation at 28,024,000 acres on July 1 with Texas at 10,914,000 and Louisiana at 1,227,000. The figure equals 68.6 percent of last year's 40,852,000 acres. New York futures rose about $2 per bale after the government report.
Sunday night a lone bandit robbed Henry Barnes station at College avenue and 29th street, taking about 26 dollars after asking for a bottle of soda. Claude Atkins, in charge, was ordered to the restroom for two minutes while the thief fled and police searched the area. The bandit was described as medium height, about 150 pounds, wearing a brown suit.
A copper powder horn once used by Daniel Boone's Kentucky hunting party was presented to the University of Texas library archives by Pey ton Wade Nowlin’s granddaughter Lena Dancy, featuring two horsemen, a Canadian deer crest with seven four point stars, and Texas aquatic acorns and nuts.
State relief workers consider establishing a rural work center at Millican as part of rural rehabilitation. A survey is under way alongside an inspection of tenant houses offered to relief families. Another survey targets cripples under 55 in relief households to determine needs for separate relief aid.
