Mer and Mrs. Lester Conway and children from Goose Creek visit Mrs. Conway's parents in Rye. Mrs. Conway is remembered as Misa Rosa Merka. Mr. Merka and Mr. Conway were business visitors in Bryan today. Helen Catherine and James Lawrence, children of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Tom Lawrence, work at the Texas Centennial Exposition in Dallas and report enjoying the fair.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Sanders-McCullough Mortuary for James Bert Carroll of the Rock Prairie community who died Saturday at a local hospital. Reverend W B Breazeale officiated and funeral rites were at Old Bethel cemetery. Carroll, born February 6 1862 in Edinberg Mississippi, lived in Brazos county 51 years as a respected farmer. He is survived by his widow three sons and two daughters plus five brothers and one sister. Pallbearers named.
Brazos County electors out of the county or unable to attend the primary may vote absentee starting Monday. County Clerk Frank Worsham notes a 15 cent fee to obtain the absentee voting application, to be paid with the application.
A crowd of workmen and assistants renovate the Webb Brothers store on Main street. They prep for the Smart Shop to stock new woods, with interior work预计 to take several weeks before completion.
July 7 San Antonio reports five people died in a head on collision on the San Antonio Boerne highway five miles from Boerne. The victims include Mrs J F Needham of Freer and her two children Roberta two and J F Jr four, B F Ferguson Point Top her brother in law and Dr T L Moody head of Moody's Sanitarium Boerne. The crash occurred as the woman Ferguson and her children rushed to reach her injured husband from a refinery accident.
Roy Sanderford senator from Belton campaigned for governor in Bryan, criticizing Gov. Allred’s pension plan and liquor revenues. He cited costs of the pension commission, attacked Allred for state duties, and labeled F. W. Fischer a hot oil merchant while diminishing Tom Hunter’s bid. The talk drew many Brazos County residents to the courthouse Monday night.
At the Bryan College Station Business and Professional Women's Club meeting Dr. H E Hipps of the Sanitarium for Crippled Children at Marlin described the institution and methods to restore wasted bodies. Lantern slides accompanied the talk. Miss Hazel Bennett and Miss Marjorie Rogers joined Dr. Hipps for the event and invited members to the intercity health meeting on July 27.
S. M. Brown, superintendent of Bryan city schools, was installed president of the Bryan Lions club Tuesday noon by F. D. Fuller. Other new officers include J. Coulter Smith as first vice president and Lt. L. Pistole as second vice president. New board members are Mit Dansby Fred Hale and Bill Wimberly. R. A. Booth began a second term as secretary treasurer. The retiring president, R. C. Franks, was praised for the year's work including Easter Egg Hunt, the Stephen F. Austin band carnival, Amateur Shows, and Boy and Girl Scout activities. Brown will miss one month for Columbia University and the Lions International Convention in Providence. The next meeting will be joint with the Rotary to celebrate Railroad Week.
About 200 Brazos county residents have been found eligible for old age assistance and will receive pension checks as rapidly as mailed. Texas Old Age Assistance investigator J. E. Gammon said his Brazos county work is not finished and he expects over 400 eligible residents. Checks will average about $20 each.
George B Terrell of Alto, candidate for state agricultural commissioner, visited Bryan and College today to campaign. He has long served in the office, in the Texas legislature, and one term as congressman at large.
Betty Jo Cook daughter of Mrs Elizabeth Cook and pupil at Travis elementary won District 8 in the elementary Texas Historical Contest receiving 50 dollars. Her entry featured Bryan Main Street 1867 with data on notable figures and a current view showing Bryan's development since founding.
Judge W C Davis and his son Billy tour Washington to landmarks like Mt. Vernon Arlington Lincoln Memorial and Unknown Soldier tomb. They visit Independence Hall Coney Island Empire State Building and meet Dizzy Dean who signs a ball. The pair travel home aboard the Mexico City highway opening party with Daniels Connally Chavez and others.
Dr. F L Thomas of Texas A and M reports boll weevils causing more injury than flea hoppers across most cotton areas. He notes rising hopper counts along the coast and in North Texas, with field averages from 9 to 28 percent in various counties. Leafworms found in Cameron Hidalgo. bollworms feared as heavy rains raise egg-laying risk next week.
City records show permits issued by City Secretary Guy P Bittle totaling 156716 for the first half of 1936 marking the strongest local building activity in years. June alone accounted for 16110 with 10450 for new homes and a Kemp high school project at 2375.
The Legal Benevolent Association, once based in Hearne, gains authorization to rename as Western Benefit Association and will relocate its offices to Bryan. The move reflects organizational rebranding and geographic shift within Texas.
A likely tax collection record for Bryan was reported for the 1935 second half taxes, closed June 30, with $11,464 due under the split payment plan. All but $116, or just over 1 percent, was collected, City Secretary Guy P. Bittle said, signaling improvement.
Shugart Motor company remodels and enlarges all departments to offer better service as the public is entitled. J B Munns as general manager and J W Shugart Jr plan a Bryan site after extensive study of towns. Shugart and Munns relocate from Fort Worth and Floresville respectively, pledging civic involvement.
Despite heavy rain sustaining most of the day a large crowd attended the Fourth celebration at the American Legion home. The sports program was dampened with baseball games canceled but candidates for precinct county and district offices spoke to the audience. Hundreds enjoyed the barbecue dinner and many bought remaining succulent meats to take home. The day closed with a dance that drew a capacity crowd.
Directors of the Bryan Compress and Warehouse company re elected J Webb Howell as president and George G Chance as vice president. New secretary treasurer M L Parker and manager J C Cloud were named. Dansby and Putz renewed as assistant manager and equipment caretaker. The firm, formed in 1897, operates fireproof and sprinkler-equipped warehouses with low insurance rates.
Willie Powers, a juvenile with multiple names, was lodged in the county jail Sunday charged with stealing about 17 dollars from a Bryan and College Station bus on June 18. Constable Jolly arrested him in Marlin after a brief pursuit when the bus driver was away. The suspect allegedly admitted the theft and has prior theft arrests in the area.
The First Baptist Church orchestra will rehearse Thursday at 7 30 p m in the Business Men's Bible Class room, directed by Mrs Van Hill and aides. Choir practice led by Mrs Daniel Russell will also be at 7 30 p m in the church auditorium. Music Evening draws interest in perfecting junior and senior orchestras and expanding the church choir.
The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce will hold its next regular directors meeting on Tuesday July 14 replacing the previously scheduled time. A reminder that the meeting will proceed at the new date and time as announced by the chamber.
Mrs. Owen confirms engagement to Capt Rohde in Washington. Fiance planned to arrive soon with marriage plans undecided. When asked if she would resign she offered no comment.
Brazos county will receive state highway department credit this year for 25202.18 in road bond money previously escrowed and turned over July 19 1935. The credit reduces county indebtedness on the state highway system, effectively retiring that amount of bonds for taxpayers.
City Secretary Guy P. Bittle says the bonus bond funds have been spent foolishly. He notes a recent influx of delinquent tax payments as funds from the bonus bond program are used to clear old debts.
Carl Wipprecht suffered the loss of the tip of his right thumb when it was severed by a wood saw. The accident highlights workplace safety concerns and the need for careful handling of machinery at the worksite.
Dallas July 7 A day by day record from Bella Maxey Harris chronicles social life at Old Washington on the Brazos after the Civil War. The diary notes balls picnics tournaments queen selections visits to plantations church singing school and young romance including a thwarted elopement and a failed marriage proposal.
In New Orleans area on July 7, Lionel Champagne sugar planter was found shot at his Gold Mine plantation. A posse searched for a Black farm laborer suspected in the slaying. Sheriff Duke said the laborer's daughter reported seeing her father shoot the planter and flee toward fields after firing a public safety item.
Two year old Jimmie Alonzo Sy, son of Mr and Mrs Alonzo Roberts of 1718 Parker Ave, died after a short illness. The body was moved by Mc Culloch Dansby Co to Cross for services at ten, with Rev C B Thompson of Bryan officiating. Interment followed at Cross Cemetery. The family and friends mourn the loss in Bryan and Cross communities.
Candidates for district county and precinct offices continue to file expense accounts before the night deadline. W. R. Allen assistant county attorney has been invited to speak on Authority of the Police before the peace officers short course at College. The course runs Monday through Thursday and opens Tuesday July 23. Mr Allen has accepted.
