Early farm groups focused on social and educational aims before realizing the need for economic cooperation. The Farmers' Union began in Texas and spread widely while England's Rochdale Pioneers influenced farm distribution efforts. Commercial interests feared the farmers building their own system.
Bryan residents and visitors are noted in a sequence of brief items. Byars of Reliance joined local visitors, Bond of Rock Prairie was in town for business, Sarah Lee Durham attends summer classes at A M College, and Henrietta Plagens of Houston, a graduate nurse, visited Bryan and is working on a Navajo special case.
At the First Baptist Church the meeting on Wednesday evening planned an new orchestra for Bry an with 25 pledged musicians, each owning their instrument. Mrs Van Hill who directed an orchestra before moving to Bry an and Dee Mize of Allen Academy will assist. rehearsals start Thursday night with a first public appearance anticipated.
Flea hoppers spread more widely but in smaller numbers across Texas this week, says De F L Thomas of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station. Numbers rose on Ellis Grayson and Kaufman county farms with Grayson Kaufman injurious levels. Increased counts also in Brazoria DeWitt Matagorda Refugio Victoria counties. eight coast counties and Brazos Burleson Milam show declines. Boll weevil infection averages rise to 24 percent south Texas and 27 percent southeast Texas. Hot weather slowed cotton insects as boll weevils struggle in ground squares and plant growth stalls briefly.
Preparations for the Earl Graham Post 159 American Legion Fourth of July celebration anticipate a large turnout. Bryan businesses close to allow out-of-town candidates and speakers, plus entertainment including bingo and a dance. A Studebaker car giveaway at 10 pm and a three game baseball series with Dallas’s junior team add to events. Committee members include Dr Webb Buchanan L A Spell and W L Goodloe with organizers Erskine Krenek Pierce and Ashworth Gray.
Dr. P. C. Mangelsdorf a Harvard graduate and Texas A and M geneticist spoke to the Bryan Lions Club Tuesday noon. He outlined Texas and southern corn progress and accomplishments in breeding corn wheat and oats. Fred Hale introduced the speaker who was called a special guest.
A solemn burial for "Old Man Grouch" by 69 Boy Scouts from Frazog and Robertson counties marks the start of a ten day Camp Arrowmoon session. The camp prepares daily work and study programs as leaders oversee activities and a July 4 barbecue is planned.
Expense accounts from district county and precinct candidates are arriving at Frank Worsham’s county clerk office. Most first reports filed. two more due before election time. Worsham reports the largest account as he paid the Democratic county executive committee fee himself. Other totals include Harris 192.50, Ware 124.50, Cole 137.50, Cole 156.55, and Nunn 156.55 with various entries for precinct and county posts.
Travis B. Bryan president of First National Bank is named a member of the Agricultural committee of the Texas Bankers association by President T H Nees. He previously served on the committee last year and has long served as agricultural banker for Brazos County.
E F Creekmore of the American Cotton Cooperative Association spoke at the Brazos Valley Cotton Cooperative Association annual barbecue and meeting at Sue Haswell Memorial Park in Bryan. He praised the cooperative movement and credited the Brazos Valley with strong leadership led by J R McCrary of Calvert.
County Agent C L Benson said Miss Sara Cotropia daughter of Mr and Mrs Carlo Cotropia Mumford who was valedictorian of Hearne 1936 has been accepted for entrance as a freshman at Rice Institute in Houston in the fall according to the registrar.
I Morgan, longtime Bry an assistant district superintendent for American National Insurance Co, is named district head for the Nashville district and will begin duties July 13. He and Mrs Morgan with their son Bobby plan to travel to Nashville via Houston to reach the assignment. Ernestine Hooker, formerly in Mr. Morgans office, will relocate with a vacation and move to another company office. Seldon Ellis will serve as the companys Bry an and College representative.
College Station June 29 Dr. Mark Francis long aided Texas cattle through veterinary research at Texas A and M College and the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station until his death Sunday. His work against Texas fever advanced cattle importation and improved herds by immunizing cattle and studying the disease transmitted by cattle ticks.
Miss Rosemary Knobel of Bryan has been chosen Junior Queen for the Texas on Parade centennial pageant in Hearne. She will accompany Mrs. W. T. Dillard as duchess, wear a white satin gown with a crimson train, a jeweled crown and scepter, and be attended by Jewell Allen and Doris Jean Sisson. A Bryan Hearne party plans to attend the centennial night parade.
Rev and Mrs C B Thompson and children Charles Barbara Ann and Bobby Allen returned from a motor trip through Georgia and Florida Rev Thompson attended the Free Will Baptist general conference at Glenville Florida June 16 to 20 on the return trip the family vacationed along the Florida coast Others at the conference included Rev J L Bounds of Waco delegate from Texas Mr and Mrs J L Edge Rev and Mrs E Sterl Phinney of Bryan and Barney Grant of North Zulch
Funeral services for Mrs Bettie Searcy Powers 67 died at home on Highway No 6 Bryan were held Monday at College Avenue Baptist Church with Rev W B Brazeale officiating. Interment was in City Cemetery. She is survived by husband Ben Powers son Tom Powers Bryan daughter Mrs B F Patterson San Antonio six nephews served as pallbearers and several relatives attended from out of town.
August Prinzel celebrated his 82nd birthday at his Kurten farm home with more than 60 relatives including his wife two daughters and their families. Born in Cassel Germany June 28 1854 he came to the United States as a youth and has lived in Brazos County half a century. The day included a noon barbecue dinner and gifts from guests while daughters and grandchildren joined in the celebration.
About sixty five to seventy rural women and girls gathered at Haswell Memorial Park in Brazos county for a county wide rally on clothing and canning projects led by Alma Metcalfe. Judges evaluated wardrobe work and canning displays while attendees shared a luncheon and heard inspirational talks.
Dr. Mark Francis longtime dean of veterinary medicine at Texas A&M and head of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station division died suddenly on campus. Funeral services were held today and burial set for Shandon Ohio. He joined the college in 1888 and led efforts against cattle fever ticks and immunization programs that saved Texas cattlemen millions. His fossil collection, housed in a hall named for him, drew visitors for years.
A Red Cross First Aid course opened Saturday at College to train volunteers for highway safety stations in Brazos county. Dr. R. M. and chapter chairman M. br Cashion met the class, with sessions at 7 30 p m and two hours of instruction nightly. The 15 hour course ends with exams qualifying students to assist in Red Cross highway work. Readable class roster includes A Arugasa, M F Brown, Curtis Bullock, F B Brown, D Burley, J H Brownlee, and more.
Ernest Goen and Mrs. Tillman Jones spoke at the American Legion home on Thursday evening to a large group. They discussed child welfare Americanization and rehabilitation work, with examples of good deeds cited. The program included songs by Mildred Salley and Kathleen Stuart and a dance by Jackie Hensarling, followed by a social hour and refreshments.
