Negroes detained after reported Millican shooting

Sheriff Nunn and assistants responded to a Millican area report of a negro shooting at a fruit place. They brought in two uninjured suspects who had fired at each other with a pistol and a shotgun. Aggravated assault charges filed. both jailed pending bond arrangements. Dr W H Lawrence listed with dental office in City National Bank building.

Oil showing in Buzzard Roost well raises hopes

Oil was struck Friday in the Buzzard's Roost pond well in this county. The showing occurred at about 1300 feet and spurred excitement as drilling continued to 1400 feet. Log is described as excellent by stockholder Lamar Bethea amid deposits of asphalt and sulfur. Doctor driller Mr Adams was reportedly ill but holds the sinking contract for the Country club well.

Burglary Charge Against Ed Williams In County Jail

Ed Williams charged with burglary after entering Jake Collins house in Millican. Sheriff Nunn reports a watch and a bracelet were stolen during the break in. The suspect is held in the county jail pending further action.

Rules of Exemption Formed in Washington War Draft Plan

Washington June 29 Exemption regulations were finalized at the cabinet meeting and will be approved by President Wilson within forty eight hours. The rules align with Crowder's draft plan and broaden exemptions for physical incapacity vital war industries religious belief family support and other war related criteria. The draft is expected to be heavier with men assigned to noncombat war work where needed and a draft day set within two weeks.

Embargo Lifts Cotton Planting in Large Texas Zone

Austin June 28 The federal government will embargo cotton growing in a long zone up to the Rio Grande and 100 miles inland Texas growers fear the move will hit the valley hard. A delegation from Harlingen San Benito Browns ville met with the governor and agriculture commissioner to discuss the order and its impact on future crops The embargo targets new plantings but may not affect the current crop as authorities stamp out the pink boll weevil threat.

Man Shoots Self Near Temple Texas

Marshall P. McCain a 31 year old farmer living twelve miles south of Rogers near Temple Texas killed himself with a pistol Saturday. An inquest by Justice of the Peace Gibson returned a verdict death by own action and the motive remains undetermined.
