Brazos County War Savings Drive Tops Quota

Brazos County exceeds its war savings target by about 53 thousand dollars with total pledges reaching 432,706 and district reports still due. County chair E H Astin led an organized educational drive with Bryan and Brazos County Commercial club as headquarters while meetings and pledge cards covered rural districts and the city.

Limit Club adds to war savings total to $10300

College War Savings Drive Tops Goal at A and M

At a mass meeting President Bizzell announced A and M college subscriptions to the war savings drive exceeded the $21,500 quota and may reach $30,000 after revision. Uncle Dan Jackson received a $25 stamp gift, and a gold ring auction raised $171 for the Red Cross before being awarded to Dr. M. Francis.

Chayotes Sent by Washington Department to Cavitt

Dr. J W Cavitt received three sprouted chayotes from the department of agriculture in Washington. The fruit resembles a pear with a cucumber color and is edible as vegetable or fruit. The shipment included instructions and recipes. Chayotes originate in tropical America and are hoped to succeed in southern states below the frozen ground line.

Postmaster Surges War Savings Stamps Demand in County

Postmaster Lawrence reported Bryan and Brazos county rural offices nearly sold out of war savings stamps Saturday. With $40,000 on hand, about $32,000 was sold, including $24,000 cash at the office and $8,000 to rural Post Offices. A fresh $35,000 supply arrived, and he can secure any needed amount within 24 hours to meet demand.

Five German alien women registered at Bryan Post Office

At the Bryan post office five German women registered as enemy aliens. Most cannot write in either language, signed with marks or thumb prints, and provided photos and full fingerprints. Ages range from 1857 to 1886 birth years. all had various ties to the area. No reports yet from other county post offices.

Mrs George H Echols longtime Brazos county resident died at her Rosprim home at 1 30 this morning She was born April 22 1858 in the county and is survived only by her husband a brother in East Texas The funeral is set for 5 pm at the City cemetery with services by Dr E W Solomon of the Methodist church She had no children and her Hassell family ties include a nephew Frank who spoke at the Colonial theater last week
