The funeral pageant for George VI ends in St George's Chapel Windsor with the coffin laid beside English kings. Crowds thronged the route from Westminster Hall as royals and world leaders followed, pausing two minutes at 1 30 p m. for silence before burial.
Dr Webb Buchanan commander of Earl Graham Post 159 American Legion returned from a Dallas business trip to seal a carnival show for the Legion Fair. He also visited his daughter Miss Bobbie Ann Buchanan in Ranger for the weekend. Also returning from Dallas were Mr and Mrs C M Mitchell and their two sons Charles and Johnnie Mack after a weekend with friends. Miss Lucy Parks visited parents on South College avenue and then returned to Houston to continue her stay with her brother O J Parks Family.
The 1936 Farmers short course at Texas A M College will run July 20 through July 24, earlier than last year, announced by H H Williamson director of the Texas Extension Service. Attendance in 1935 reached 7000, an all time high.
Elsie Taylor, a black man, was arrested Sunday by Deputy Offa Williams with Jess Conlee for attempting to hijack merchant J. N. Sramek of Smetana about 11 pm Saturday. The complaint was filed in Justice A. J. Buchanan's court. Sramek and his brother William identified the suspect, who fled after being seen. He had prior burglary history and escaped from Robertson county jail two years ago. Authorities expect Franklin county officers to transport him for trial.
Sheriff R W Nunn returned from Anson with Sammy Sanders a negro brought to the county jail on a charge of complicity in a string of burglaries during the holiday period. Robert Shelton another negro implicated is jailed in Anson and will be brought for trial. Sheriff Nunn has recovered much property from Bryan homes and hopes to recover more as the case is pieced together. He was accompanied on the West Texas trip by H P Dansby.
Drizzling rains eased freezing temperatures in South Texas and spared winter vegetables from frost damage. The mercury stayed below freezing mainly away from the Mexican border as a final cold snap passed and warmer weather began to move in. Rains dampened the southern portion.
Sheriff Roy W. Nunn rides in a county furnished green Chevrolet under the new compensation system. He previously drew fees for serving papers and notifying witnesses, now paid into the county officer salary fund. He logged about 300 miles Wednesday to clear up burglaries in Bryan.
Bryan and Brazos county child welfare workers are advised the Fourth Texas Conference on Child Health and Protection will be held in February 1937, not February of this year. Jeanie M. Pickney, co chair of Education and Training, says a biennial meeting is more economical and allows the steering committee more time to advance the work.
Soil Erosion Control Service will demonstrate erosion prevention on W. E. Graham farm at Rock Prairie in Brazos County for five years. About 400 acres contracted. CCC enlistees from Madison County will carry out work including mapping, pasture management, terracing, strip cropping, galley control, reforestation, and check dams. Projects support Farmers Short Course and College of Agriculture programs.
E. J. Jenkins a longtime Bryan civic leader was elected president of the Bryan board of school trustees replacing the late A. M. Waldrop. The six member board includes R V Armstrong Ivan Langford Travis Bryan F L Henderson and Dr Lamar Jones. Mrs Vernon Floyd resigns Bowie school post. J Sidney Smith named to take the city school census again.
Construction on the new brick veneer Kurten school started Thursday. The project costs about 18000 with 8000 from a Public Works Administration grant. J B Murphy of Mineral Wells won the contract. he and son J Alton Murphy have been in Bryan and Kurten to start work.
Bryan city commission discusses extending electric service to the highway east of College and the Union Hill area and serving Steele's Store via line extension or REA distribution. They weigh gate prices, patronage, and REA reimbursement while awaiting more data. Rates outside city limits are cut, and fire limits expand south and west to control new construction.
Texas A and M College plans its thirteenth annual horse show to be staged Wednesday afternoon April 8 by the military department. Col A R Emery and Maj W R Irvin head the show committee with open events for all: pony class rider performance jumping and harness classes. Capt M H Marcus oversees entries and awards include cups ribbons for winners.
The Census Bureau lists 10,249,688 running bales of last year's cotton before Jan 16, including 16,284 American-Egyptian bales. Total 1934 crop was 9,636,000 bales, with state ginnings detailed for Alabama to Virginia and Texas leading at 2,790,957.
Dr. C. H. Williamson aged 76 prominent figure in the Southern Presbyterian church died at a Memphis hospital after serving as pastor of First Church from 1909 to 1927.
Miss Ida J. Parker reports her niece Miss Gladys Foster is critically ill with a second operation performed Saturday night. Foster taught home economics at Stephen F. Austin High School.
At a Thursday meeting the out of school farm boys of Kurten, led by J L Sowell, studied making rope from binders twine. They learned rope could be produced at half the usual cost with little effort, crafting about 90 feet. The fifth in a series drew about twenty boys and several fathers.
By close of business Monday 2346 Brazos County residents had paid poll tax and qualified to vote in the 1936 elections with slightly over 100 exemptions granted. With local state and national elections that year, officials expect about 4000 poll tax receipts to be issued. Friday January 31 is the final payment day, with three days remaining.
Beaumont Lions charter member J R Rohrer now in Houston and W E Paulson Texas A and M College spoke to Bryan Lions on Tuesday. Rohrer described Railway Express Agency work and noted unusual deliveries while in transit. Paulson discussed cooperative cotton gins and the Experiment Station role.
Approval of Bryan engineering department plans for an 8 inch water main linking the power plant to the storage tank under Southern Pacific Lines was granted by division engineers at Ennis. Utilities Commissioner Forrest Jones and City Manager R G Williams said the plans were ready for city action when funds or authorization permit.
Governor O K Allen died at 10 40 am from cerebral hemorrhage after a sudden attack at the executive mansion. Lieutenant Governor James A Noe automatically succeeded him. Allen, born 1881 in Winnfield, rose from teacher and mill worker to governor and US Senate candidate, longtime Huey Long ally.
Residents of Brazos county seeking final action on naturalization papers will be heard in district court Feb 11. Judge W C Davis announced the date after a word from William A Whalen of the Galveston district, Immigration and Naturalization division. An official from his office will be in Bryan to provide information and guide those taking out first papers or pursuing steps toward naturalization.
