The Bryan Booster notes that a proposed Bryan College airport could become real, prompting hopes for related civic ventures. It suggests future targets include highway division HQ location, a combined auditorium and gym, and a Farmers Market shelter, all achievable with effort.
Mrs C M Lopez formerly of Bryan now in San Antonio with Mrs F A Thompson are staying at the LaSalle Hotel in Bryan. Mrs Alfred Crocker of Tyler a formerly Miss Glada Mae Trant visits her parents Mr and Mrs Phillip Trant this week. James B Hall of Hall Chevrolet Company traveled to Houston on business. Mr and Mrs Tyler Haswell and Col and Mrs C C Todd attended the Episcopal Diocesan Council meeting in Tyler with St Andrews delegates return home after a large gathering.
Washington January 23. Civil Works Administrator Harry L. Hopkins orders 14 states to cut civil works payrolls immediately. Cuts range from 1000 in Utah to 81000 in Wisconsin as states had exceeded quotas. Reductions include Oklahoma 1500 and Texas 45000.
The Bry an Volunteer Fire Department held its annual banquet Monday night above the New York cafe. Chief C E B Chesser MC announced Sam Novo’s perfect attendance record for the fourth time and Mayer N A Stewart presented the third bar for the badge. Mayor Stewart praised Assistant Chief Note for the department’s good record.
President C. C. Todd announced the Bryan Brazos County Chamber of Commerce will form standing committees with chairs G. Sam Parker for Finance and Membership John Seeley Caldwell for City Development Daniel Russell for Educational W R McCullough for Legislative R E Karper for Agricultural D L Wilson for Highways Charles H Edge for Fire Prevention I Maniloff for Public Health D W Williams for Interrelations E E Yeager for Trade Extension and J F Casey for Entertainment. A tentative annual budget was discussed by the executive committee and will be reviewed by the finance and membership committee. the group stressed the need for larger membership and income to sustain the organization.
E. L. McClure has moved to Bryan as Brazos Mutual sales manager and owns a 1827 Collins and Hannay history of the United States by Charles Wiley. The volume, over a century old, won a $400 cash premium and a $50 gold medal for best hist ory explaining the American Republic for academies. McClure, a stamp collector, found the book in Corpus Christi two years ago while hunting stamps.
Mrs. Lee J. Rountree will speak at a citizens rally in Hearne on Thursday January 26 at 7 30 PM. The Shakespeare club sponsors the event with Mrs. W C Bishop as citizenship committee chair in charge. The high school auditorium hosts the meeting.
Speakers at the Grimes County Federation of Women’s Clubs meeting praised the past year’s work. They highlighted support for Roosevelt relief programs and the link between national greatness and individual effort. Mrs. Robert Trant presided with Miss Louise Craig assisting as acting secretary.
Brazos County relief administrator reports CWA projects will resume with weather permitting. Labor quota remains 525. rural work weeks drop to 15 hours and city projects to 24 hours. Despite earlier cuts, officials in Washington seek funds to keep work through May 1.
Mrs Lillie Warren Ross wife of J M Ross of Dellwood Park died Saturday night after a short illness. Funeral services were held Monday at 3 p m in Bryan at the Mc Culloch Dansby chapel conducted by Rev W N Purcell. Interment followed in Wellborn. She is survived by her husband four sisters and three brothers. Pallbearers named are J D Williams Robert Bond Joe Barron Douglas Royder William Bradley and Foy Royder.
Plans for the Bryan and College airport submitted by City Manager R G Williams were approved with changes by the Bureau of Aeronautics US Commerce. Work may start soon after truck hire and material cost issues are settled. The airport sits on Jones Estate land east of town with three 3000+ ft runways and gravel oil surfaces. No hangars are planned yet. A government sighting of a Waco to Galveston route includes a PW A grant of over 70000 dollars.
Plans have been made to stage two Roosevelt birthday balls on January 30 to aid the Roosevelt Foundation for infantile paralysis at Warm Springs. In College Station the events will be at the American Legion home and the K of C hall with the Aggieland and Serenaders providing music. Committees from American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Knights of Columbus, and Catholic Daughters of America organize ticket sales and dances, with tickets at Caldwell's, Canada's Pharmacy, and the chamber of commerce.
Two men were seriously injured and another cut and bruised when an unlighted wagon collided with a car on the bridge over Wixon creek on Highway No 21 about 9 o clock Monday night. Albert Manning fractured pelvis and leg and suffered head injuries. Joe Supak believed to have skull fracture. Frank Manning bruised but not staying at Wilkerson Clinic. Sam Simmons and William Amos escaped injury. Supak recently married Miss Mary Frances Boone and lived between Edge and Kurten.
The Sunday night pre service hour at First Baptist Church runs 6:45 to 7:30 with a sermon, drawing a large, pleased and profitable crowd. The second program featured Rev. Robert Lowrey and Ann Hawkes writers while hymns like Shall We Gather At The River were sung by the congregation. Mrs. J H Johnson accompanied at the piano for the evening.
Bart Haltom an 11 year old son of Mr and Mrs Haltom was seriously injured Thursday night at about 730 when he slipped on a wet concrete floor in the basement of the First Baptist church. He fell as he entered the door while returning from the kitchen where refreshments were being prepared. He was unconscious when found by his father and was rushed to a nearby hospital where X rays revealed three skull fractures. His condition is described as critical.
Allen Academy was inspected Friday by Col. W. A. Castle, ROTC officer of the Fifth Corps Area. The annual inspection evaluates War Department recommendations for military schools in the corps area to be considered for the national Honor Military Schools rating.
Dr. L. B. Elrod returned from Houston after visiting his long time friend Dr. J. L. Hendry who is desperately ill with little hope of recovery. Hendry served as a missionary in China for over forty years and receives support from the First Methodist church. he is now superannuated and living in Houston.
At a Sunday meeting of the American Legion Free Fair board Ed S. Martin was elected president with Albert Goodman as vice president Lang Spell as treasurer and Henry Ross as secretary. The year board includes R. % Schovajsa A. N. Stewart H. T. Downard Elbert Gammon L. A. Spell John Lawrence Anton Krenek C. L. Gray and Henry Ross. A committee was chosen to attend the Dallas Fair Secretaries Convention to secure a show for the fall fair.
Relatives and friends traveled from Bryan to Willow Hole to attend the funeral of W L Christian of Dallas held at Willow Hole cemetery. Pastor L B Elrod led the graveside services. Christian died January 20 in Dallas at age 79. He leaves a widow and two children C F Christian of Abilene and Miss Mary Christian of Dallas.
Mrs. A. D. Martin of Bryan won the cooker for naming Ward's New Deal Pudding at Montgomery Ward cooking school. Seventy five contestants entered. a four person audience committee selected the winner as the week long sessions were led by A. R. Elmore of the National Cooking School.
COLLEGE STATION Jan. 22 The first semester at Texas A and M College ends Saturday after final examinations. The second semester begins next Monday morning with registration for old and new students. Old students may finish registration tasks this week such as paying fees and finalizing room assignments.
In a special session the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce reelected directors and unanimously chose Col. C. C. Todd as president for the year. G. Sam Parker and E. E. Yeager were named first and second vice presidents, with J. E. Stanford as secretary and N. F. Lockerd as treasurer, First National Bank as depository. Todd lauded the 1933 record and urged active committees for reconstruction work. Directors present included N. B. Allen and J. F. Casey among others.
Mrs Lee J Rountree district No 17 chairman names Mrs M E Parker of Anderson Grimes county as Grimes county road beautification chairman. Parker also heads the Grimes County Federation of Women's Clubs beautification efforts and will organize the county into a working unit.
J D Martin of Parker Astin Hardware Bry an Prof Dan Scoates of A and M College along with Mrs Cliff Buchanan and Mrs Thurman Mathis and Mr and Mrs E E Yeager travel to Dallas for the 36th annual Texas Hardware and Implement association meeting. Martin is a former president and now director. Scoates serves as secretary. Presidents Peterson Davis Cobb and other officials scheduled as speakers address codes and industry topics.
