Ww L Matthews, a World War I veteran from Bryan, was sent to a tubercular sanitarium in Sulphur Springs Oklahoma for five months. He returned early by train with his wife and baby and now seeks a house for his family to rent in Bryan. Local relatives of both families reside nearby.

Colder Night Sets 1924 Bryan Record at 22 Degrees

Sunday night brought the coldest reading of the Bryan winter at 22 degrees per the A and M College Experiment Station with E J Reinhardt noting the record. The last 24 hours peaked at 88 degrees, six above freezing since early Sunday. The prior cold mark was 67 degrees on January 5, and the cold wave began with a high wind that later eased.

Birthdays of Lee and Jackson Honored at U D C Program

A large turnout attended a memorial program at Mrs. Webb Howell's home honoring the birth dates of General Robert E. Lee and General Stonewall Jackson. Mrs. M K Thornton and others hosted, with music, papers, and a display of 1860s dresses. More than twenty thousand people are said to have witnessed the ceremony, and plans for the year were announced with hostesses for February.

Dr Henry H Sweets of Louisville Kentucky preached at the First Presbyterian Church in a well attended service despite cold conditions. The sermon on Nehemiah 8 3 titled The Joy of the Lord Shall Be Upon You emphasized Christian joy over worldly life with vivid illustrations. Music featured the anthem Come To My Heart Lord Jesus and a solo by Edgar Buchanan district agent of the Texas Farm Bureau Cotton Association. Trial of John Hightower Held This Afternoon

John Hightower a Black man was bound over to the grand jury on $2,000 bond after a preliminary trial concluded at 3 30. Attys F L Henderson and R S Bowers represent him. County Attorney Oak McKenzie prosecutes for the state. The exam sought to decide if he is bound to district court and set bond.

Attendance at Bryan Sunday schools reached 692 despite the coldest day of the winter. First Baptist led with 253, followed by Methodist 188, Presbyterian 93, Christian 53, Free Baptist 45, Catholic 35, Episcopal 25. totals reflect strong participation across churches.

Albert Scott Jailed on Liquor and Pistol Charges

Albert Scott was arrested around two this morning at his home by Officers Offa Williams and Charley Saxton after police say they seized 4 gallons of intoxicating liquor and a pistol from his possession. He faces two charges, bonded out for 909 and 400 respectively, with preliminary hearing set for Wednesday at 2 PM as attorneys attend district court in Franklin Texas.

A man named J M Kulak was seriously injured today in an auto accident on College Road. He was taken to Bryan Hospital for treatment with a badly injured leg. No details of the wreck were available before the Eagle went to press.

Mayor and Mrs Haswell booked for West Indies cruise

In the Texas state papers dated January 20, the Goodwill Chamber of Commerce cruise list names Mayor and Mrs Tyler Haswell of Bryan among 87 prominent Texans. The LaFayette departure from Houston on February 26 sails to March 20, 1924, as a social and commercial outing for public and business ties.

Funeral rites held for Mrs Minnie Jones at Gossett home

Funeral services for Mrs Minnie Jones aged 24 were held Saturday afternoon at four at the F A Gossett home in this city, conducted by Rev L Guy Ament. She is survived by her parents husband and one child. The body was shipped Sunday to Singleton Grimes county for burial by Mec Culloch Gordon Co.
