Cotton futures closed up today with prices rising by several points. Local spot quotes showed middling basis at 32.5 cents, reflecting firmer demand in the market.

Father loses life in failed rescue at Pottsville fire

A Pottsville area family tragedy left a mother and her four daughters aged one to sixteen dead when a Middleport home burned early today. Andrew Harvilla, the husband and father, was severely burned while attempting to save them. Mrs Harvilla perished trying to rescue her children.

Fatality List Rises by Ten in Overnight Checkup

A grim update reports ten more fatalities as public health officials release today’s checkup numbers. Six persons are still listed as missing, while a woman was killed after leaping from a window in a separate incident.

Millican Community Club elects officers at Monday meeting

Jim Tobias and County Agent C L Benson report on upcoming matters at Millican gathering. Officers were chosen for the boys and girls clubs with Lillian Mills as president and Sylvia Meredith as vice president. Tragic Boy Shooting Kills Phillip K. Trant Jr

Phillip K. Trant Jr. age 12 died after an accidental gun discharge by friend Robert John Persons during a hunting game south of Bryan. The two boys and another child hunted rabbits with unloaded guns until the play of war led to the mishap. Trant died at 5:30 a.m. after hospital surgery. He was a Free Baptist Sunday school attendee and Bryan Boy Scout. Survived by parents, sister Gladamne and brother Robert Charles. Funeral Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Free Baptist church, burial City Cemetery.

Armament Missing Man Surrenders to Local Farmers

John Hightower a Black man who killed Shep Robertson in the I G N depot in the city last Sunday night surrendered today to John and Henry Gregg. After days as a fugitive he was found in the Brazos Bottoms and brought to the county jail by Sheriff Morehead. Officers had kept a strict watch and prevented escape. An examining trial was planned for the following day if arrangements could be made.

Aggies Fall Twice as Mustangs Sweep Series

In Dallas on January 28 SMU defeated Texas A&M 16 to 9 in the gym. Gene Bedford led the Mustangs with ten points on five field goals including three long-range shots. Domino game quarrel lands man jailed after shooting

Booker T. Robertson, a negro, is in county jail on aggravated assault and carrying a pistol charges after a domino game dispute with his brother in law Charley Robertson. A shot from a German luger went through a doorway, hit a wall, and struck the bed below. Sheriff L E Morehead took them into custody after midnight.
