Bryan Pickling Industry to Contract Purchase

Associated Press reports Price-Booker Manufacturing plans to buy about 150 acres of cucumbers from local farmers in Bryan. Farmers would plant 8 to 14 acres each, guaranteed price before planting, with gross earnings around 25000 per farmer under normal conditions. Chamber to manage acreage and salting sheds, funds to be expended locally. Chamber moves to refer to agricultural committee. Also invites W R Scott of Southern Pacific Railway to visit Bryan and coordinates with State Highway Department official Haile to attend Rotary meeting. The Federal Council of Churches of America has aligned with the American movement for German relief which has endorsed the proposed $70,000,000 government food credit bill. The council represents about 100,000 Protestant churches and over 20 million members in the United States.

A print mistake altered the meaning of Jesse Conlee’s candidacy in Bryan. The word friends was missing from a paragraph, making it seem his supporters boosted him. The corrected text notes his father John D. Conlee’s prior sheriff and marshal service and his statewide peace officer record.

Reading Club Elects Officers for 1924 25

The Reading Club met after holidays to answer roll call and discuss 1923 events. Officers elected for 1924 25 include Kathleen Sims as president and Mrs J T S Park as vice president, with several secretaries, a treasurer, a critic, a parliamentarian, and a reporter. New members welcomed were Mesdames Gibbs Cook and Fountain. A pianologue titled Suzanne was presented by Mrs Hugh Milton and Mrs Travis Bryan.

Methodist Quarterly Conference Held in Bryan Sunday

The first quarterly conference of the new year met at the Bryan Methodist church Sunday afternoon at three. Presiding elder Rev. D. H. Hotchkiss of Navasota led the session, reports were given in full, and plans for large activities were laid. Hotchkiss preached at both morning and evening services, including College Methodist Church.

Missionary Society of College Met on Monday Afternoon

The Woman's Missionary Society of College met Monday afternoon at the tabernacle with Mrs. King Vivian as hostess. It was the regular monthly business and social meeting with reports from officers showing continued work in society offices. Refreshments followed the discussion led by Mrs. B. F. Harrison.

Wife of Bryan Man Dies Giving Life to Twins

Frank Norris Biett, formerly of Bryan and living with Mrs. Fannie Garth, reported his wife died on Christmas Day in San Antonio. She left behind her husband and twin girls. In Bryan, Mr. Biett had represented the Goodyear Tire Co. and had many local friends offering sympathy.

Farm Bureau met Saturday marketing system here to stay

The Brazos County Farm Bureau held a Saturday meeting in the courthouse at 1 p m on Jan 5. New officers were elected and delegates named for the State convention in Dallas on Jan 15 and 16. Edgar Buchanan reported progress in handling cotton to stabilize prices and urged farmers to study the bureau with an open mind.

Bryan Lodge No 64 Knights of Pythias held its weekly meeting Tuesday at Castle Hall to install elected officers. J. & Gammon served as Chancellor-Commander with Co. Fatal Missouri-Kansas-Texas crash in South Texas

The crash near Houston killed three and left several others critically injured including Engineer Lee Thomason of Smithville. Fireman Ed Sullivan’s body was identified in the wreckage and Ed Derossett of Smithville was named as another victim. Investigators from the railroad and local justices of the peace began examining the disaster as a possible order confusion among trainmen.

Miss Agnes Turner Dies at Noon in This City

The Turner family mourns as Miss Agnes Turner aged 15 dies after a brief illness just before noon. Funeral services will be held here Wednesday with relatives from Bryan, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston expected to attend. Father J. T. Turner operates Turner Grocery on 26th Street near the post office.

Agnes Turner Laid To Rest Beneath A Mound Of Blossoms

The First Baptist church heard heartfelt goodbyes at 8 p m Tuesday for Agnes Turner youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs J T Turner. Her sudden death occurred Monday morning at the family home in Bryan. Large crowds attended. floral tributes came from her Sunday school class schoolmates and friends from other cities. Special music included Asleep in Jesus and No Need of Shadows. pallbearers wore uniforms from A and M College and Allen Academy. Dr John A Held and Rev R L Brown led the service at the church and grave with Nearer My God To Thee sung at the conclusion. The graveside mound of blooms symbolized a bright future reunion.

In Bryan Holmes Brothers Confectionery plans a $7,000 upgrade to the Main street plant. A new cold storage facility with brine freezers will handle wholesale ice cream and cold delicacies powered by electricity, along with hot water pipes to sterilize manufacturing and serving areas. Kurten Community Meeting Draws Crowd In Cold

Miss Laura Belle Rotan and other officials attended Kurten's regular monthly club meeting Saturday night. Prof. J L Dickey of A and M College spoke on improved agriculture livestock and education using sterootican views. About two to three hundred people attended despite bitter cold. Delphian Chapter of Bryan Back to Work After Holidays

The Bryan Delphian Chapter resumed activities after the holidays with 28 members present. The group studies Greek history to support literature and civic development, focusing on The Golden Age of Greece. Activities included assignments on political factions, Grecian leagues, Persia, Xerxes, Pericles, Cimon, and Athens prosperity. New Offer for Muscle Shoals Leases Made by Southern Powers

Nine associated power companies of the South tender a fresh proposal for the Muscle Shoals hydro electric power. The plan would let part of the power be used to manufacture fertilizer, place Muscle Shoals under the federal water power act, and allow the government to collect about 100 million dollars in rental over 50 years while retaining ownership of all properties.

Peters of New Baden Sells A Hundred Hogs

A J Peters of New Baden returns from a visit to his sister Miss Etta Peters in Bryan. He sold his entire supply of one hundred hogs to local meat market men at eight cents per pound, and was impressed with Bryan's progressiveness.

Bankers Gather in Galveston for Texas Association Meeting

Travis B. Bryan cashier of the First National Bank of Bryan will travel to Galveston tonight as district secretary to meet with J. W. Fincher president of the district and A. D. Simpson vice president of the National Bank of Commerce Houston. Also present will be the Galveston Clearing House entertainment committee bankers of the city to arrange a program for the District meeting of the Texas Bankers Association to be held February 18.

John A. Fushak of Kurten died Sunday January 6 at 9:30 a.m. Funeral held Monday with Rev. J. B. Gleissner in Kurten Cemetery. He was 60 and survived by Olga Fushak and children Annie Tillie Otto and others including Frank Anton and a son in a government hospital.

Baptists Report Record Sunday School Attendance

The Baptist Sunday School Council reported the highest quarterly attendance in the church's history, with totals near 5,000. The Mens Bible Class accounted for about 700 attendees, and the A-1 Standard organization was completed, placing the Sunday School in this class within the Southern Baptist convention.
