Miss Natalie Block of Cincinnati has spent a week in Bryan visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Harry Block. She leaves today for Houston en route to Cincinnati. Ed Blazek of Central Tex Auto Co is ill with a severe cold. Mrs J T Hanway travels to Houston for a short visit with her son, plans to return for the Woman's Club first meeting in 1936.
Bryan youths gain national exposure after Montgomery Ward store in Bryan staged a bike parade. Joe Dyer won local prize and is cited in a nationwide feature. Louise Brayton of Bryan is mentioned for riding a miniature airplane on her bike. Notable entries include 110 year old Mrs. M A Schwartz of McAlester Oklahoma with two bicycles and a crate of poultry.
Crowds filled the courthouse corridors on beer license day. County Judge J M Ferguson reported 27 applications on file and that, as far as he knew, all would be granted. The license fee is 50 dollars, with 25 to the state and 25 split between city and county.
The Lindberghs, fleeing Hauptmann execution, landed in Liverpool and sequestered themselves in the Adelphi hotel with detectives escorting. Lews plans to stay in England were unclear as ship crew noted a possible permanent stay or abroad travel. The family may visit relatives near Cardiff, Wales, for an extended period.
Funeral services will be held at Bright Light church in Harvey Sunday at 11 o'clock for Frances Cobb mother of C. Y. Cobb of Steep Hollow. She died Saturday morning at 6 30 at her son's home after a lingering illness. Interment in Bright Light cemetery under Mc Culloch Dansby Funeral Co. of Bryan. Born in Arkansas in 1850 she was 85 years 9 months and 27 days old. Surviving are her son C. Y. Cobb and daughter Mrs. Alice Barrow both of Bryan.
Election at the Court House Saturday evening chose local committeemen from four precincts. Precincts include C. B. McGregor J. A. Gandy and George Cargill with Aubrey Tobias as alternate in Precinct 1. Payne Joe T. Locke Shealy with B. F. Lloyd as alternate in Precinct 2. Ward Mooring H. P. Franklin R. W. Seigert with Milton Sims as alternate in Precinct 3. Jim Jones Lonnie Boriskie A. H. Keller with W. W. Hicks as alternate in Precinct 4. County board members named include H. P. Dansby H. C. Seale Ward Mooring with Joe T. Locke as alternate. Local committeemen will start on new contracts once Washington provides definite information.
Approximately 100 Bryan men were on WPA projects on Monday morning. About 70 were digging ditches and extending water mains while roughly 380 worked on street graveling duties.
Dallas December report notes department store sales in November were two percent below October yet six percent higher than November last year. Wholesale and retail demand remained active in the district, with a seasonal downturn in wholesale distribution but volumes above a year earlier.
Mr and Mrs Coulter Smith and their son Malcolm were injured when their car collided with a northbound vehicle driven by Will Faulkner on a Christmas trip to visit relatives south of Bryan. All recovered slowly with Mrs Smith sustaining the most serious injuries. Watson McAlpine of Tyler, visiting, sustained cuts and bruises.
Jewelry silver and clothing valued around 1200 dollars were stolen from the Gerson home last week. Entry was made through a kitchen window with the Yale locks damaged. Mrs. Gerson was in Houston at the time. police say the thief likely knew the residence.
Miss Julia Vance, registrar of the Extension Teaching Bureau, reports that non resident UT students enrolled for 2069 courses by correspondence this year. The registrar completed and received credit for 2989 semester hours, or 71.02 percent of the 5617 hours closed out by the bureau.
A gobbler attacked Justice A. J. Buchanan on a Wednesday morning forcing eleven stitches to close a severely torn hand. The incident occurred as the turkey resisted decapitation and left the judge nursing injuries.
Friends gathered at First Baptist in Bryan to honor Mrs Mary Lou Taylor Withers 66 who died Sunday at home after indigestion. She and husband W A Withers lived in Bryan nearly fifty years and were noted for hospitality. Survived by husband and two sons or daughters not listed in excerpt.
Officials said initial 1985 cotton subsidy payments likely will be mailed January 15 with checks issued to producers on Bankhead allotments. Payments come from 50 percent of customs receipts set aside for the AAA and may range up to $55 million overall, with most of the 1935 cotton moving to market by month’s end.
A. A. Allison, chair of the Finance and Attendance committee for the Jackson Day banquet, met Brazos county Democrats at the LaSalle hotel in Bryan to boost attendance for the Corsicana event in the 6th Congressional district. He discussed arranging a response to the toast to Brazos county with attendees including Mrs. Lee J. Rountree and Judge W. C. Davis.
Acting director L. G. Kares of the Texas Public Safety department announced four women will serve as commission special Rangers to combat gambling. They will have full police powers, visit gambling locations with escorts, and detain patrons until raiding squads arrive.
Dr. D. G. Jones, former Brazos county resident and Bastrop Louisiana surgeon, returned home Tuesday after a Bryan business trip. A son of the late J. J. Jones and a Texas A. and M. College graduate, he renewed his Eagle subscription and noted a hot Louisiana campaign with likely rough sledding for Long regime backers.
Tuskegee Institute president Dr. F D Patterson announced 1935 U S lynchings totaled 20, up five from 1934. Fourteen whites and sixte en Negroes saved by officers. Mississippi led with seven cases, while Louisiana Florida Georgia Texas California North Carolina and Tennessee reported one each.

Announcement by Mc Culloch Dansby Company states E. H. Whorton will join the firm at the start of the new year. Formerly with R. T. Dennis Company of Waco and Hillsboro for 13 years he now resides in Bryan with his wife and two children. He is an experienced furniture man and will serve customers in his new location. W. I. McCulloch will focus on farming and the livestock business.
Contributions to the Rogers Memorial Fund from Bryan and Brazos county residents total $278.58, short of the quota by $21.42. Campaign officials, led by Mrs. Lee J. Rountree, will keep the drive open until Thursday afternoon January 2, urging all residents to bring pennies to dollars to the Eagle office or Bryan banks before banking hours end. The remaining funds will be mailed to state headquarters that evening, with New Year’s Day and Thursday anticipated for full completion.
A blown safe and rain soaked papers lay in a Bryan driveway near Highway 6. The Bryan Service Station at Brenham owned the papers. two watches were missing from the safe. Brenham officers and the service operator recovered the safe and planned return.
Bryan post office official W. S. Collard says exams will fill rural carrier slots in Bryan with applications due by Friday January 17 and the test to occur about two weeks after. An additional exam for five railway mail clerk posts will be held in Bryan on January 10 due to high applicant volume nationwide.

Dallam county will likely exceed 250 wheat contracts for the next four years. County agent office reports applications already surpass that figure. In the past two years, contracts numbered 218.
Alma H. Moore seeks to add 30 to 40 women to the Bryan WPA sewing room, with about 40 already employed. Space limits at the old fire station and lack of extra supervision require larger quarters and a new Wellborn sewing room to absorb the expanded payroll of roughly $1,000 monthly, plus $720 for the added workers.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a five car garage and two automobiles at the Edge Apartments about 4 30 Friday morning. The cars belonged to Paul Edge and M W Bergeson. Other vehicles were moved by their owners. The neighboring corner of the adjacent garage was searched. Building and car losses were partially insured.
Bryan shows improved building activity in the year ending 1935 with permits totaling 149 710 dollars, up 51 740 or about 33 percent from 1934. Growth centers on repairs to residences and business buildings, while new construction and state highway office work also contribute to a stronger year.
Early Tuesday a brightly lit cedar named Tree of Light was struck by a car driven by E. E. Allred, the machine crashing the tree and leaving its driver to offer compensation for any municipal damages. Police found no witness and noted the wrecked car was towed from the scene.
San Antonio December 31 WPA officials announced plans to expand adult education in Texas by employing 2500 teachers under the emergency program and registering applicants with the National Re-employment Service. The effort aims to reach 100000 adults, with grants totaling 18655650 for adult education and 940430 for nursery schools. previously 2000 teachers served 84000 persons under the Texas Relief Commission. Unemployed relief teachers may be rehired if eligible positions remain after earlier relief listings.
