After a football trip the custodian seeks donor approval to spend $63 on a banquet for twenty boys and guests, a picture party, and football booklets, with remaining funds to the Good Cheer fund. The total comes from $128.35 collected, $65.65 to be prorated, awaiting donors’ views.
Bryan county notes detail Miss Elliott Beason a Texas Woman's College graduate and Christmas visitor leaving for Fort Worth to resume studies. Dr. T Walton A and M College president heads rural electrification committee meeting in Dallas and attends a contest banquet at Baker Hotel. City Manager J Bryan Miler returns from Greenville after his father’s illness and death.
Major General Ernest Hinds surrendered command of the Eighth Corps Area to Major General Thomas Q. Donaldson at noon in San Antonio. Hinds gathered his staff for a farewell, expressing deep regret over severing ties formed during nearly 45 years in the U S Army.
Brazos county Red Cross receives acknowledgment for a $156.50 annual membership remittance from Brazos County Chapter during the Eleventh Annual Roll Call. Mrs Minnie Foster of Wellborn also noted for new membership as the chapter earns the Honor Flag for meeting quota.
Governor Alfred Smith in his eighth and last annual message urges that future favorable constitutional amendments be put to a popular referendum before legislative action. He also defends the Eighteenth Amendment and Volstead law, stressing law enforcement as a sacred state duty.
Two monoplane flights carry seven passengers on a goodwill expedition for the Houston Chamber of Commerce. They depart Houston with stops at Corpus Christi and Tampico and expect to reach Mexico City by nightfall.
A. Brann of Navasota and L. C. McClurkin of Navasota, with W. E. Farmer of Bryan, are in Bryan to sell Gulf States Utility Co. stock for the Western Public Service Co. at 97 dollars per share. Dividends are quarterly, next due in March. Brann succeeds Paul Freeman who left for South America. this is Brann’s first Bryan visit.
A farmhouse blaze near Little Rock killed five children of W. G. Denby four miles north of the city. The victims are Ophelia 14 Loren 9 Ruth 7 TD 12 and Ravis 4.
Cotton futures quoted from 23 to 27 points higher while local spot prices advance to 19 to 20 cents per pound.
The Court of Criminal Appeals reversed its former stance and ruled that the Governor's pardon absolves the recipient from all legal guilt for offenses committed. The decision was issued in a Hunt county case and reported by the Associated Press from Austin on January 4.
Dallas dispatch reports Texas Republicans debate backing Herbert Hoover at the National Republican Convention. Congressman Harry Wurzbach of Seguin opposes instruction to the Texas delegation, while national committeeman R B Creager urges support for Hoover.
East Texas D C Board Will Meet in Dallas January 1928 to discuss policies for the year. President R M Kelly of Longview will present membership report by treasurer Tucker Royall of Palestine. Vice President John D Middleton of Greenville will report on plans to host the 1928 convention.
Dallas dispatch reports rising temperatures across Texas for the next 24 hours with a freezing belt extending slightly south of Dallas as warmer weather returns after a cold spell.
Mrs. W. E. Neeley president of the First Methodist church society has named chairmen for Local Work Parsonage Church Social Service Legislative Interracial Children's Work Entertainment Grounds and Membership. Miss Grace Thatcher is listed among Childrens' Workers and Wilson Bradley elected representative to the City Federation.
Captain Joel Hunt and Sikil Sikes of A. and M. College returned home after playing in the East West football game in San Francisco the day after Christmas. They were honored in California with tokens rings and blankets paid for by promoters, with no pay to the players. Coach D. X. Bible was expected to arrive in seven days from New York City after attending the national rules committee meeting. He will drive from Fort Worth in his car.
At the first staff meeting under director Oscar B. Martin the Extension Service named H. H. Williamson as vice director and as agent. Martin and Williamson left for a Dallas banquet by the Texas Jersey Cattle Club and will attend the More Cotton on Fewer Acres contest.
The Extension Service staff held the regular monthly meeting introducing new director O B and honoring H H Williamson with a padded rocking chair. Miss Minnie Cahill and Mrs Maggie Barry spoke on local topics while the group shared New Year resolutions. An Extension party on Monday night drew a large crowd despite severe weather at the Y M A parlors. Williamson becomes vice director and state agent per Director O B Martin’s Tuesday conference.
The Comptroller of the Currency issued a call for the condition of all national banks as of December 31. In Texas, Senator A E Wood, from Granger, denied rumors of joining the state board of control and said he will seek re election to the Texas Senate.
Guy A. Blount, brother of the late Eugene H. Blount and former East Texas Chamber of Commerce director, was nominated by the Nacogdoches Chamber of Commerce to fill his brother’s place. Blount is a local farmer and landowner in the area.
Hanford McNider resigned as assistant secretary of war and President Coolidge nominated Charles Robbins of Cedar Rapids Iowa to succeed him in Washington.
NACOGDOCHES Jan 4 Sheriff T. G. Vaughn of this county was probably fatally shot while attempting to make an arrest last night. Deputy Sheriff Carl Butler was wounded in the arm at the same time. An arrest is expected to be made soon.
Negotiations in Austin on January 4 aimed at settling disputes between the Brownwood water control improvement district and the Syndicate Power Company over Colorado River water use. Key players included Jay Alexander and Ward S Arnold, with State Board of Water Engineers reducing Brownwood’s permit from 500000 to 125000 acre feet. Brownwood officials plan to supply water to the city and irrigate land pending a broader peace among San Angelo, Junction, and Associated interests.
The Friendship Bible Class of the First Baptist Sunday School elected officers for the new year led by Mrs. Edgar E. Bullock as president. Other officers include Miss Sadie Hamilton as first vice president and Mrs. Harvey C. Fender as second vice president. The group plans to furnish its new class room in the nearing completed First Baptist church by early April.
Bert Creed aged 45, who escaped Huntsville prison in 1904 after a six year sentence for horse stealing, turns himself in at Plainview Texas and asks to be sent back to serve out his term. He says his escape was a foolish stunt and he will not be free until July 10, 1932, at age 51.
Washington announces immediate negotiations with Mexican postal authorities to establish air mail service. Postmaster General New cites Lindbergh’s flight as proof of feasibility and practicality of the new route.
The Texas A and M poultry farm reports a prosperous year under manager W F Munnerlyn. White Leghorns averaged 230 eggs per bird, with pullets laying 290 and 284 eggs respectively. Barred Plymouth Rocks averaged about 200 eggs, Rhode Island Reds also productive with show winners, and most high producers kept for breeding.
Mrs Stecke, president of the Ninth District Parent-Teacher Association, leaves today on official visits to local associations in Marlin Waco and Mexia spends the weekend in Dallas with friends and plans to return to College Station late next week.
Relatives report the Durham Ontario death of Mrs. W. R. Fairman Sr. from pneumonia. She was 78, step mother of W. R. Fairman and mother of C. S. Beckwith of Bryan. She spent a winter here with her son two years ago. Funeral held in Durham on Sunday.
The Woman's Missionary society of the Methodist church in College Station met Monday for the first meeting of the new year. Mrs. W. E. Lewis presided and Mrs. J. C. Thomson led study on Life and Letters of Paul. Treasurer Mrs. Jennie Yates reported 37.50 on hand and 9 new subscribers for Voice.
A local warning warns residents about scam postcard offers claiming to provide newspaper clippings for a fee. The note explains firms send sample papers nationwide and clip items to sell, urging recipients to trash the mail and avoid losing money.
A M Poultry Farm buys a top bred White Leghorn cockerel for egg production. The bird’s dam laid 317 eggs in 1926 and its sire’s dam 302 eggs in 1924. Valued at 250 dollars, he is mated to 12 hens on the College farm, with first year records from 240 to 290 eggs. The pullets will be trap nested to obtain high producing hens.
Handwriting experts hired by Hearst publications for a special Senate Committee found the Mexican documents published in Hearst papers to be spurious. The experts’ report was presented today by William Bedford, Hearst counsel, to the committee.
Houston lumberman John Henry Kirby announced a gift of 600 acres of East Texas forest to Texas A and M College. The land will fund forestry study and a student loan fund administered by the Association of Former Students. Revenue from developed land will aid the loan fund annually.
The Navy opened an inquiry into the loss of submarine S-4 near Provincetown after it sank, with 40 missing or dead, as officials investigate the disaster.
Dean Charles E. Friley of A and M College spoke to the Bryan Lions on The Trend of Intercollegiate Athletics after returning from New York City. The meeting announced minstrel show end men, upcoming practices, and a sympathy resolutions committee for the death of J. Bryan Miller's father.
The College Station Parent Teacher Association will meet Thursday January 5 at 2 30 P M in the Physics lecture room. The meeting will feature a Nature Program on thrift with a two reel movie on Forest Conservation by FE Siecke state forester and talks on Texas Wild Flowers and Our Texas Birds. Hostesses are Mrs J R Dunn Mrs D C Doak and Mrs M H Byron. All patrons and friends are invited.
The Extension Service Club will meet Thursday at 3 P M at the home of Mrs. G E Adams. Joint hostesses are Mrs R R Reppert and Mrs G W McMillan. Election of officers is the order of business and all members are urged to attend.
In Austin on January 10 or 12 State Highway Engineer R A Thompson said final disposition will be made on placing power, tele graph and telephone lines along state highways. The Highway Department seeks lines at the extreme edge of roadways to avoid maintenance interference and will consider moving old posts to new locations.
