President Hoover asked Congress to create four new federal offices and alter four departments to cut millions in taxes. He proposed a Public Works Administrator an Assistant Secretary for Public Health an Assistant Secretary for Merchant Marine and an Assistant Secretary for Conservation. He also urged consolidating personnel and education and expanding agricultural economics. The plan would cost $40,000 extra yearly for salaries but save administration costs many times that amount.
Mr and Mrs L C Schlemmer of Kyle visit son L Schlemmer assistant secretary for the Texas Hardware Dealers Association in A M College agricultural engineering. They head toward Marlin. Miss Marie Tower of Abilene visits the Bryant home. Mrs Dan Hall ill with flu but improving. Mr and Mrs J T Baldridge relocate to Bryan occupying the Goodlow cottage. Baldridge works with Singer Sewing Machine Company in Bryan.
Second Lieutenant Herbert C. Lichtenberger, a Randolph Field flying instructor, was charged in Seguin with two counts of robbery with firearms and one assault to murder for the Schertz State Bank robbery on Monday. He was arrested at Randolph Field and a bond decision was not yet made.
Houston February 17 Twenty armed deputies and sheriffs patrolled highways to prevent further destruction of milk coming to the city as the South Texas Producers Association and organized milk distributors continued their price war. The producers entered the retail field when the distributors cut the wholesale price.
COLLEGE STATION Feb 17 The William Scott chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will present a radio program on WTAW at Texas A and M College Friday Feb 18 at 8 pm The program features a Tribute to George Washington by Mrs F L Thomas and Mrs W S Howell will discuss Trees Aggieland Orchestra and Mrs M K Thornton will sing Trees and Carry Me Back to Old Virginia The event honors the bi centennial celebration of George Washington with local and county participation.
Bryan Lions Club considers a food drive benefit after learning many city schoolchildren cannot afford meals. Lion Morris Schulman offered another benefit show at the Palace next Tuesday from 1 to 6 p m with admission for cans of food. Proceeds will aid Parent-Teacher Associations to feed undernourished children.
Judge W. C. Davis traveled to Conroe to hear requests to dissolve injunctions restraining Montgomery county tax officials from certain enforced collections. The injunctions were issued by Judge Fountain Kirby of Groesbeck, the same judge who previously faced challenges to injunctions against Robertson county officers enforcing the cotton truck law.
No change in account noted as cotton futures closed 3 to 4 points lower. Local spot quotes held steady at 6.5 to 6.5 cents middling.
Associated Press reports North Texas floods cresting today then receding. Elm Fork of the Trinity at Gainesville falls from a 25 year high while the Red River at Denison also recedes as statewide rainfall lessens. Trinity crest expected to pass Dallas today.
Mrs Mary Ellen Bullock aged 84 11 1 died Tuesday at noon at the home of her son Samuel A Bullock in Steep Hollow. She had lived with another son Joel Bullock in Corpus Christi and visited during Christmas. She is survived by three sons and four daughters. Funeral from Lampasas with interment at Rockchurch cemetery.
Walter Splawn former president of the University of Texas and railroad authority testified before Congress after a year of study recommending that all railroad holding companies fall under Interstate Commerce Commission jurisdiction in Washington on February 17.
Fire broke out about 7 80 oclock Tuesday evening at Shop Elite owned by Mrs. Bertha Edinburgh. It caused unestimated damage to stock and fixtures with some building damage. Insurance covers stock at 3000 dollars and furniture at 1000 dollars. building also insured.
Mrs. H. L. Morrison of East 23rd street found her flower bed stripped of newly planted roses and perennials. Footprints showed a prowler moved through the yard and carried away the plants. She mused whether neighbors should guard yards at night this spring.
Nanno Andreeson a stock buyer and farmer in Stout Iowa killed his wife and two children Elmer 14 Verna 9 and his sister in law Maggie Hessenius 58 with a rifle then drove to town left a note on a garage door promising five deaths before returning home and killing himself with a shotgun Financial difficulties are cited as the motive in this tragic case

East Texas will be generally fair and colder with freezing in the north and frost in the south if clear, except in the valley where tonight is fair and not so cold in the northwest Thursday. West Texas remains fair and colder in the southeast tonight and fair elsewhere tomorrow.
Bryan Rotary members heard a tribute to George Washington and a contrast between earlier days and today. L Henderson spoke with W I Mel Culloch directing the program and A M Waldrop presiding. Henderson argued that present affairs show a golden age rather than hard times and praised Washington as a surveyor whose early exploits shaped the Republic.
Victor Maddi, sought in Kansas City for the killing of Detective O P Carpenter during an attempted bank robbery, was granted 2000 bond in Houston. A habeas hearing was moved to February 20 as attorneys said Governor Sterling refused extradition without more evidence. An affidavit from John Mingori denied Maddi’s involvement and claimed police coerced him to allege Maddi’s role.
The Navy announced the new giant dirigible will be named Macon after the Georgia city. The craft is already under construction.
Schulenburg Texas Miss Anna Seydler about 62 hanged herself in a door at her home. Her sister Marie about 70 was found unconscious in another room with a rope around her neck. Justice Vogt reported the death as self harm. Doctors expected Marie to recover. A note signed by Anna was found. Both women were unmarried and long-time locals active in church work and said to be in good financial circumstances.
Louis Smith, a Black man, faces possible loss of sight after Ada Smith threw concentrated lye in his face. County Attorney Oak McKenzie filed maiming charges today. Smith alleges abuse by his wife, who claims she acted in self defense after years of beating. Conviction could bring 2 to 10 years in prison.
The First Presbyterian Church announces morning sermon topics by Dr. Charles T. Caldwell. Thursday’s topic is A Great Woman and Friday’s is The Resurrection of the Body. Services start at 10 o'clock each day and the public is invited.
In Shanghai on February 17 Japanese and Chinese artillery fought along the waterfront near Chapei. The Japanese government authorized an ultimatum demanding Chinese withdrawal 12 miles from the city, with a large air force assembling for a major offensive if refused. Five Chinese killed and 19 wounded in the settlement as shells fell.
In Shanghai a nightlong artillery duel shook the city along the front from Chapei to Kiangwan. Chinese forces unleashed their heaviest guns yet in a bid to clear Hongkew in the international settlement, wounding two British sailors and drawing U S Marines into the firefight. Japanese naval HQ reported severe bombardment around Kiankwan and heavy rifle and machine gun fire across the line.
Mukden February 17. Chae Hsin Po, mayor and ally of the Japanese, is tasked with drafting a proclamation that would declare an independent Manchurian Mongolian state. The announcement is expected to follow.
The League of Nations Council published an appeal urging Japan to uphold the supreme sense of honor in a rape case. The report notes the appeal was issued from Geneva on February 17 and references international diplomacy surrounding the incident.
