Tax Collector Guy Harris reports 3830 citizens paid poll taxes for the period ending January 31, qualifying for this year’s general election. Analysts estimate overs and riders could raise the voting pool to about 4500, signaling a record or near record turnout for Brazos County in years.

In College Station on February 1 C A Cobb of the agricultural adjustment administration told the Texas A and M extension service that the eligibility limit for government cotton contracts was lowered from 100 to 75 pounds of lint per acre averaged over five years The signing deadline was extended to February 15 This change could allow about 500 000 acres in Texas to qualify and may lead to a sign up of roughly 4 000 000 acres statewide with about 25 percent of growers previously under 100 pounds per acre now eligible to participate.
Washington Feb 6 The Senate Agriculture Committee endorsed reporting a Bankhead bill amendment. It would drop the gin licensing provision and levy a 12 cent a pound tax on cotton ginned in 1934 beyond 9 million bales.
Bert McMorries a well known Bryan man died Saturday night at 9 30 after a week in Wilkerson clinic Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 pm from MecCulloch Dansby funeral chapel with Rev L B Elrod officiating A Methodist choir quartet delivered hymns and flowers adorned the casket The funeral procession moved to Bryan city cemetery He was 41 years old born January 25 189 and survived by two half sisters Mrs R B Compton and Mrs John Sayles of Abilene Pallbearers were Hal Haltom Robert Walthall Joe Spell Jack Johnson J W Poin Dexter and M Schulman
Reports from Houston say the Henderson No 1 well by Humble in Ferguson Crossing has a drill stem stuck at 6161 feet the deepest test in the area. Sunday night another report says preparations to raze the derrick and relocate it to a new site, with four possible locations under consideration.
Tax Collector Guy Harris will compile a county delinquent tax list as of February 1 for publication within weeks, following a prior resolution by the county commissioners court.
Sam FE. Eberstadt worked Friday for the government to survey the economic impact of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration program on farms and related businesses in Brazos County under County Agent C. L. Benson. The survey must be completed by February 14.

Mrs. Velma Graham assistant in the chemistry division of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station broke both bones in her right arm just above the wrist when she fell stepping from the car Monday afternoon. She was taken to Wilkerson Memorial Clinic for treatment and later returned home where she is reported to be getting along satisfactorily.
San Angelo broker T. L. Benson paid a record seven cents per pound for 1 530 mutton lambs bought from J. B. Stevens of Eden last week.
Col lin county has about 40 000 acres signed up for cotton reduction this year with several thousand more to rent to the government. County Farm Agent Jack McCullough expects the county quota to be reached if extension to February 15 is approved in Washington last week.
Menzie and two others from the Caldwell jewelry store robbery and John Seeley kidnaping are in Florida custody. They face indictments in four Texas counties for robbery with firearms and could be tried in Brazos or Anderson counties with death penalties sought.
Fire heavily damaged the old Rehde house on Oak Grove avenue Monday afternoon. The landmark, repaired 41 years ago, was occupied by A. T. Merka who saved some belongings. Fire likely began in the attic from a defective flue. loss not yet estimated.
Word reached Bryan on Tuesday that D. D. William son, a former resident, has been critically ill in Kerrville with tuberculosis for more than a year and is not expected to survive. His brothers in law Harrison, Milton, and W. T. Franklin and wife, along with D. JD. Williamson Jr., who has been a student here, left for Kerrville by auto. Mr Williamson was foreman of the Eagle Printing company’s mechanical department for several years.
City commissioners are set to discuss locating a division highway building to be constructed by the Highway department and a project to clean and repair water mains and install a filtration plant to purify the city water supply.
Rural white school teachers will meet in Bryan at the Bowie school auditorium Saturday at 10 o clock. The program will be in charge of L J Canavespi principal of Stdele s Store school.
A community singing will be held at College Avenue Baptist church in Bryan Sunday at 2 30 oclock led by Gor don Weaver the chorist of the newly organized group. Singers from Bryan and neighboring communities including North Zulch are expected to attend the public is invited.
Funeral services for Mrs. Valeska Gelber were held Tuesday at 4 o clock at the family home on West 27th street with Rabbi Wolf Macht of Waco presiding. Interment followed in the Jewish section of City Cemetery. Pallbearers included Joe Kaplan Joe Groginsky Ben Marwill Sol Gerson M Schulman I Maniloff and J J Taubenhaus with many other relatives in attendance.
Judge W C Davis will convene the February term of district court in a refurbished courtroom. The ceiling is white, walls blue green, and woodwork cleaned and varnished. Spectator seats, bench, clerk’s desk, and juror areas updated. floors receive protective covering. Courthouse corridors and offices show progress. plumbers repair plumbing and exterior repairs to cupola and roof are planned.
Premier Daladier won a 300 to 217 confidence vote in the French chamber after a riotous session. Deputies interrupted his policy declaration as blows broke out among lawmakers with machine guns nearby and thousands of police on duty amid Bayonne bank scandal tensions.

In Crockett on February 6 a northbound freight struck and killed 65 year old W. E. Havis who was deaf and did not hear the approaching train while walking along the tracks.
George A Adams Insurance Agency relocates to a new Main Street location in a building owned by Mr Adams. Founded April 5 1900 it claims a long standing record as one of the oldest Texas agencies with no court cases and no policyholders harmed by the agency negligent or inaccurate handling.
Bryan merchants favored a spring style show and discussed a city peddling ordinance to curb indiscriminate house to house selling. The ordinance was sent to the City Development committee and the style show to the Trade Extension committee for decision.
Education committee outlines campaign to attract Texas teachers to summer school at A M College. Advertising in a Texas magazine and personal letters will reach teachers. A conference of independent school district heads and a large summer conference are planned. The rural school circulating library support is endorsed. Participants include Daniel Russell J Webb Howell C C Todd Curtis Vinson and others.
Corsicana will host the annual Chamber of Commerce meeting on February 20 in the high school auditorium with Col. Ike S. Ashburn as principal speaker. Ashburn is chairman of the Texas advisory board for the PWA and GM of the Texas Good Roads association.
The American Legion Auxiliary met at the Legion home with 15 members and Mrs. Anton Krenek presiding. They planned a new yearly objective though not yet decided, each member pledging one dollar. A request for clean rags for veterans remains open, with donations arranged through Mrs. Edwin Crenshaw Jr. The building and grounds committee continues planting shrubs and trees, and members without cards are urged to obtain them at Kaplan's store from Mrs. Ed Martin.
Brazos County Health Board meets Saturday to review the first intensive tuberculosis control program in the county. Reports by county health nurse Mrs Edna Abbott Shelton and nurse Sedalia Wilson highlight immunization progress for typhoid diphtheria smallpox and malaria smear work. Funds from Christmas tuberculosis seal sales totaled 242.30 with 60 percent staying locally 35 percent to the state board and the rest to the national board.
Speaker Coke Stevenson ruled the governor must submit taxation before any bills to levy taxes for the principal and interest on state relief bonds can be considered. Duvall urged retirement provisions for a 4.5 million bond issue, fearing lack of sinking fund would stop bids February 20. The governor still has the chance to propose tax measures to retire the bonds.
Brazos county war veteran J. Allen Hale was carried to the government hospital at Legion for treatment Sunday. He was accompanied by post commander H. T. Downard Service Officer Hy. T. Schovassa and John H. Morehead. A Bryan man, D. D. Williamson, was also listed as hospitalized.
Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie I. Garth were held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the family home on South Bryan Avenue. The 83 year old mother and grandmother died Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Rev. L. A. Wilson and Dr. Thomas Gordon Watts led the rites and burial followed in Bryan city cemetery beside family members. Survivors include two daughters Miss Cora Garth and Mrs. R. L. Burney and one sister Miss Willie Rogers. Pallbearers were Walter Coulter Tyler Haswell Dr. L Weddington H A Saunders T K Lawrence and E W Crenshaw.
