A county agent recalls a World War era cotton disease blamed on alkali soil. He explains a fungal root rot thriving in deep clay soils, attacking tap roots and spreading beyond air and light. Deep plowing to vent soil was required for control.
Mrs. Ole Martinsen attended a corsetieres class led by Mrs. Vellena Brady in Houston and stayed as a guest at Mrs. Brady’s home. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Young and two sons traveled from their Cross in Grimes county farm to Bryan for the day. Mrs. B. T. Poole departed for Houston to be with her sister Mrs. H. G. Seibel for eye surgery.
Kurten residents hosted a card party Monday night to raise funds for the Hermann's Sons hall. Arrangements were led by Mrs. Otto Plagens and Mrs. Frank Conrad with Mrs. W. Hedtke of Bryan assisting. Games included bridge forty two and bunco with sandw iches cake coffee and homemade doughnuts served. Bryan guests included J. D. and Mrs. Martin Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Umland Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Hedtke Mr. and Mrs. Frank Conrad Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Fal eau Miss Mary Lou Prenzel Miss Gussie Schultz Mrs. Ella Hogue and James Whaley.
The little brown iron rabbit stolen from Miss Katy Daly and her brother Tom Daly's home lawn was returned Friday afternoon in a much altered state. It now sports a bright yellow body with silver ears but remains the same cherished keepsake from the Daly family, once planted on the lawn by their parents, the late Mr and Mrs John D Daly.
City churches cooperate under Mrs. R. H. Bush for World Day of Prayer to be observed at St Andrews Episcopal on Friday February 16 in an all day session. Public is invited.
The Texas state senate approved a bill allowing water control districts of at least 125000 acres to borrow from the federal government. The measure enables Willacy and Hidalgo county irrigation districts to borrow about 4.853 million dollars to complete their statement of improvements.
City commissioners vote unanimously to seek CWA funds for a Sue Haswell Memorial park auditorium gymnasium and a market house on the current farmers market site. They approve continuing gravel street work with asphalt oil and authorize a suit in district court to settle land rights on 28th street used by Bryan and College Traction Co for storage, needed for a proposed division highway.
Bryan merchants and business men were advised by the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce that the organization will investigate sales and advertising schemes submitted to local merchants. Merchants are urged to report solicitations for review and public reporting.
Rev Basil Bravi pastor of St Anthony s Catholic church leaves Texas for New York to hold six missions in New York City. He will preach daily and thrice daily until April 1 as he conducts the mission work and enjoys the change from Texas to New York.
Lawrence Thomas, educated in Bryan public schools, has been named grand chaplain of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in Atlanta. He serves at Gammon Theological Seminary and previously led the Wiley College endowment campaign at Marshall.
Between 50 and 60 attendees braved bad weather for a Steep Hollow community club night featuring songs dances and a one act play The Sewing Circle by ten local girls The Old Timers String Band Floyd Murray Gordon Weaver James Ricks and Louis Thompson provided music Winifred Carroll of Bryan participated in songs and dances Lion Sponsor R C Franks from Bryan attended The program was organized by club members.
The District 17 interscholastic league lays out plans for this year with district basketball events directed by Coach Madison Bell of A and M College. The playoff will be held February 17 at the Aggie gym and the spring district meet will span March 30 31 and April 7 with literary events in Bryan and athletic events in College Station. About 2000 spectators are expected in Bryan for the first weekend.
More than one hundred people gathered at the Madisonville First Baptist church banquet room for the chamber’s annual meeting. J M Brownlee served as toastmaster while guests and speakers were introduced. a string band provided music during dinner.
Carl Colvin from the Farm Credit Administration led a meeting with farmers and business leaders from 15 to 20 counties at the courthouse. The group discussed methods to resolve misunderstandings between debtors and creditors and to scale farm debts to preserve some equity for farmers, aiming to prevent foreclosures.
Humble Co plans the teardown of the Henderson No 1 well in the Cerlos area after abandonment of the test on Tuesday. A stuck drill stem preceded the decision to abandon the well drilled below 6000 feet, similar to Temple Man No 1, the companys first nearby abandonment.
Frances Aline King 20 years old and lifelong Bryan resident died Tuesday at home after long illness. A SFA high school graduate, she will lie in state at First Baptist Church Wednesday at ten with Dr. W H Andrew officiating. Burial in Bryan City Cemetery. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers named.
County Attorney Oak McKenzie and assistants went to Austin to argue reversal of the court of criminal appeals ruling in the Sylvester and Jesse Steen cases. Lamar Bethea had prompted the appeals court to reverse and remand, and officials seek to overturn that decision and affirm the district court ruling.
Members of the Trade Extension committee of the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce met Thursday to plan a Spring Style Show on March 16. J. E. Stanford was appointed to draft a program for approval, with entries and details to be solicited soon and an announcement due in about two weeks. Present were KE. E. Yeager, Ed S. Martin, J. Maniloff, John M. Lawrence Jr., F R Canady, and D B Stanford.
The Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce plans a campaign to recruit new members and raise revenue. Finance chair G Sam Parker says monthly revenue must rise by about 100 to sustain activity. The Spring Style Show on March 16 is set with merchants backing the event and Trade Extension plans approved. E J Howell of Texas A A M visited and commended the chamber for its role in attracting students.
CE students at A and M College hear bank and business leaders in a personnel administration course led by Dr. C. C. Hedges. Feb 5 speaker Travis B. Bryan of First National Bank of Bryan discusses banking business basics. Feb 12 registrar E. J. Howell covers keeping records and statistical correlation.
Mrs. H. B. McDowell and Mrs. G. S. Fraps chair the L. S. Ross Chapter U D C essay contest for elementary students in Bryan and College stations on Southern History. Hope to set a record with the largest turnout yet in this educational effort.
Dr H W Geib heads a PWA erosion study on Elm Creek in Bell and McLennan counties to protect land from erosion and link soil loss to flood control. The project is one of ten nationwide with headquarters at Temple and involves Texas A M College scientists and extension workers.
A canvassing committee reported 1403.25 collected for the Good Cheer Association. Lead members included N. A. Stewart G. Sam Parker and W. C. Mitchell. Report noted many contributors though some pledges unpaid. Hospital ward leasing discussed but action deferred. The year's organization roster was named.
Bryan chapter of Future Farmers of America formed a committee led by Melvin Dansby to arrange a Brazos County display for the State Fair in Dallas this fall. President Jack Gregg presided and Henry Martinsen read a letter from Cyril Luker of Texas Tech.
Blackie Thompson and Ray Johnson, two of three escaped Oklahoma convicts, are jailed in Harris county after transfer by Sheriff J. L. Boyd for safekeeping. They face charges of bank robbery and Caldwell store holdup. Whitey Walker and his wife remain in Palestine jail with Walker recovering from a gunfight injury in Tallahassee.
The February term of district court opened Monday morning under Judge W. C. Davis for six weeks. Grand jurors were charged by County Attorney Oak McKenzie with 15 to 20 indictments expected. Foreman J. W. Hall of Bryan led a panel of jurors from Bryan, Tabor, Harvey, Kurten, College Station, Wellborn, Edge, Steeles Store. The Caldwell Jewelry robbery and kidnapping cases from December 16 may be first presented. Identified suspects from the Caldwell job were Whitey Walker, Blackie Thompson, and Ray Johnson, jailed in Palestine on an Anderson county bank robbery indictment. Bailiffs were named by the grand jury for session duties.
City school superintendent S. M. Brown spoke on ethics codes on Dr. W. H. Andrew's program before the Lions Club. Brown outlined early topics with more to follow. Musical entertainment featured Miss Mildred Eden, Miss Kath leen Stuart, John Edge, and Harry Williams with a rehearsal set for Friday. Roland Dansby reported 112 attendees at Bowman school meeting. Howard Berry won the attendance prize.
The Texas Wool and Mohair Warehouse Association will meet at Sonora on February 14 to discuss joining the newly formed National Trade Association. J Miles O Daniel, president of the Texas group, called the gathering.
Brazos County Federation lunch in the Woman's Clubhouse spotlighted highway beautification and spring yard improvements. Mrs. W. B. Cline outlined state plans, with Brazos joining counties to be heard in the statewide beautification effort by the State Highway Department. Mrs. Daniel Russell and Mrs. J. Webb Howell sang, piano by Mrs. Evelyn Sanders Williams, and Miss Blanche Brown thanked the federation for cooperation in obtaining plant cuttings.
The Pin Money grocery, operated by W R Thomas, was sold today to J A Williams and Victor Harris, who run Red and White groceries in Bryan. The Pin Money name continues with Eston Williams in charge, assisted by Eugene Hart and Maurice Dyess, as fixtures are rearranged and stock replenished.
Representative Harold Hankamer of El Paso introduced a bill in the Texas House on Monday to require the state treasurer to issue calls for past due general revenue warrants whenever the balance in the general revenue fund exceeds 500000 dollars.
Brazos county school teachers trustees and bus drivers plan to attend the District 16 meeting led by supervisor C M Elwell to be held in Madisonville on February 17. The all day session will be hosted by local schools and the Madisonville chamber of commerce with several hundred visitors expected. Speakers include W L Hughes and G B Wilcox of Texas A and M College and Joe Guiles, state landscape engineer.
