In a local column Bryan Tex dated December 17 1982 a reader defends his wood chopping exploits and notes a plan to build up sentiment for a Bryan based order of wood choppers. He cites axes and cords of wood as measures of progress.
Mrs H H Pressley of Hearne shopped in Bryan for Christmas. Mrs Jeff Smith of Waco arrives, to stay with Co BE Jenkins and relatives. Harold Sanders family, now in Bryan, welcomes back friends. Tom Chambers welcomes a 7 3 4 pound boy born Monday. W R Sanders to host daughter and Albert Denman of Beaumont for the holidays.
W. S. Barron declined to serve as director of the Texas Good Roads Association representing the senatorial district. He received a telegram from Ike Ashburn, newly elected president, but declined since he is already president of the X-All Highway Association, which demands much time.
Henry Washington, a negro, sought for the shooting of Gus Conatella on Highway 6 about three weeks ago, was arrested in Corsicana per Sheriff J. H. Reed. He will be brought here. Washington is believed to have fired at another man in a wagon with Conatella during a prior dispute. Conatella was shot with a target rifle and not seriously hurt.
Duck Oil Company of Tulsa plans geologic work on a 7000 acre Grimes county tract near Iola owned by the Chaney family. Masten of Tyler says a 5000 foot test well may be drilled if geology warrants it, with a 3500 foot option. Plans include recovering a previously drilled Dodd tract well and a 20 geologist crew will move in within days with Tulsa backed Dyck Company support.
Mies Eleanor Lucas presents about twenty five pupils in a Christmas revue of songs plays and rhyme at 7 30 Thursday December 29 Stephen F Austin High School auditorium. Public invited.
The Delta Kappa Gamma society held an initiation banquet at the La Salle Hotel to inaugurate the Alpha Xi chapter serving Brazos Anderson and Grimes counties. Dr Annie Webb Blanton of Texas University presided. three members were absent and to be initiated later.
Henry Schram of Kurten led 24 Bryan high school boys in an agricultural project profit scheme. They grew cotton and fall potatoes to earn money.
A Bryan High School vocational agriculture project records show a net profit of 727.69 this year from 10 acres of cotton 1745 fryers 5 percent acres of corn and 7 pigs 359 laying hens three dairy cows 25 turkeys 412 acres of potatoes three beef calves and four meat hogs. Henry Schram led with 97.79 from 10 acres cotton and 37.72 from 12 acres potatoes. Lynn Weedon posted 48.05 from White Leghorn hens and 18.59 from three beef calves. Bill LeGrand earned 34 from 200 Rhode Island Red White Leghorn chicks. Other named contributors include Foster Slowey Hudspeth Putz Stevener Williamson Lightsey Locke. Losses occurred on one dairy broiler and pork project.
The Ball Lumber Company trailer truck driven by Hastings Vaughn was nearly demolished after colliding with a Southern Pacific freight train at the East 24th street crossing around 4:30 Tuesday morning. Vaughn was shaken, taken to a local hospital for examination, with no broken bones found.
A Christmas Review presented by the pupils of Miss Eleanor Lucas is set for Thursday December 22 at 7 30 p m in the High School auditorium. The public is warmly invited to attend.
Margaret Benson Louise Dyer Leo Mills Arthur Stewart Hannah Griffin and Russell Hillier seniors at Stephen F Austin high school were elected to the Bryan high chapter of the National Honor Society at the assembly period Monday. Membership is based on character scholarship leadership and service with fifteen percent of the senior class eligible and members must rank in the upper third of scholastic standing. A few more seniors and some juniors may be elected in the second semester. The Bryan high chapter was formed in May 1929 and has elected 23 members since then.
A transient jailed in Bryan after getting wedged in a dog kennel while seeking shelter. He had sold a charity suit for liquor, then tried to crawl into a dog house on College Road, getting stuck and provoking a call to police. He was released from jail and ordered out of the city.
The Legion of Bryan and Brazos county Auxiliary plan a New Year Eve Watch Party inviting former Elks members and Legion post members with wives to Bryan. Hyman’s Orchestra will provide music and refreshments will be served. Lang Spell chairs general arrangements and Ed S. Martin chairs the refreshments committee.
Funeral services for W H Allphin aged 80 a Madisonville pioneer were held at his home with the Huntsville Church of Christ pastor officiating Byron Allphin and his brother John accompanied by other relatives. Surviving are his wife Mrs W H Alphin daughter from first wife nine children from second marriage and several Madisonville residents among the survivors.
Sale of automobile license tags at the Tax Collector J. M. Ferguson office lags behind last year’s pace for the period but tags may be obtained until January 31 1933 without penalty.
Miss Edith W. Scott of Cleburne marries Coke Stevenson Jr son of Representative Stephenson of Junction. The couple will be in Austin for the upcoming session and take courses at the University of Texas.
Photographs of Texas turkey farming, provided by the Brady Chamber of Commerce, illustrate a new geography textbook. The Philadelphia publisher released the volume, adopted for Texas third graders in 1933 and expected to find use in other states as well.
Two fires over the weekend taxed Bryan firefighters in cold weather. Saturday’s blaze destroyed part of a West 21st Street home owned by Nancy Green due to a faulty flue, about 100 dollars in damage. Sunday morning a stove too close to a wall sparked a blaze at the C. M. Smith apartment at 20th and Washington, damaging several rooms, the roof, and contents with uncertain totals. renters occupied the unit and no insurance was reported for the house, furniture valued around 500 dollars.
A gasoline stove exploded at a truck drivers camp on Highway No. 6 south of Bryan, setting the tent afire and causing minor burns to a man who was asleep in his bunk. Other drivers saved most of the bedding and prevented further damage.
The rural school of Brazes county will close Friday for the Christmas holidays. School work will be resumed Monday January 2.
Special to The Eagle College Station December 20 Texas A and M will retain head football coach Matty Bell. Dean E J Kyle, chairman of the Athletic Council, said the council carefully considered the athletic situation and decided to keep Bell. The council convened with full membership minus student representatives and later met Bell to discuss next season plans.
John E. Blair division highway engineer is preparing a wall map showing the condition of all state and federal aid highways in Texas. He has sent a questionnaire to each highway division requesting sector pavement details, and the finished map will mark each mile of highway with its pavement type.
New York December reports say Ethel Barrymore remains seriously ill with pneumonia though friends hope the crisis has passed. She was stricken with grippe December 1 while in New Haven for a tryout of her play Encore.
In San Marcos on December 19 the Southwest Texas Wolf Hunters Association released 124 hounds in the first half day and caught 11 wolves, a catch that could challenge half day hunt records.
A large group of Methodist youth and friends attended the Junior Epworth League Christmas party directed by Miss Frances James at the Methodist annex on Saturday night. They played many games and enjoyed a decorated table with Christmas candies nuts apples and oranges.
Mr and Mrs William Brock smith of the Kurten community mourn the burial of their three week old infant and are at the bedside of their three year old son Willie Jr who is critically ill with pneumonia at a Bryan hospital.
Census Bureau report shows Brazos county ginned 15 308 bales from the 1942 crop through December 1, down from 22 937 bales by the same date a year earlier.

The Future Farmers of America at Austin High hosts a father and son night at 7. A harmonica duo by Harvey D. V and a talk by Monroe Bond on Election Represses the Low Mood head the program. The group set a father barbecue date and elected Jeremiah as third year basketball coach and Lindsey Lawless as first year coach.
Bryan city operations run on a tight schedule. For the first five months of the current fiscal year expenditures total about 19 691 toward a 44 308 annual budget. The prior year budget stood at 56 011, about 12 000 more. Permanent improvements include ample city entran ce work and park upgrades with fire poling motorcycles and auditorium recoating in Sue Haswell Memorial Park.
