The Bryan business district shines brightly for the holidays and attracts praise from residents and visitors. A Christmas tree at 26th and Main could finish the festive display, as a past “tree of light” did. While late for this year, planners should consider it for next season.
Mrs V J Head hosts her cousin Mrs M Glasscock of Thorndale as guest in her Haswell Drive home. A new Fox family home at Hin ewell Drive and East 29th Street nears occupancy after the New Year. W T Smith of Myler arrives to spend holidays with parents Mr and Mrs J M Boriskide. J Brooks Stevenson Jr and family plan Christmas week in Houston visiting mother Mrs J B Stevenson Sr and sister Miss Maude Stevenson.
Eugene R. Black, 55, former governor of the Federal Reserve Board, died today in Atlanta. He guided the reserve system during turbulent 1935 and returned last summer as governor of the Atlanta Reserve Bank. Black was regarded as a conservative influence in federal financial policy.
Taylor, Dec 19. S R Walker charged with murder for the slaying of his wife who died of a crushed skull. Investigators say he had brooded months over unemployment and business issues. He surrendered after sending an ambulance to his home. A heavy wrench is evidence. Funeral plans for Mrs. Walker await a son from California and a daughter from El Paso.
Special to the Eagle reports light frost in Bryan area Thursday morning. East Texas Fair with light frost in the south and warmer in the far northwest tonight. Thursday brings increasing clouds and warmer conditions in the south. West Texas largely partly cloudy tonight with slight warming in the Panhandle and far west. Thursday unsettled with highs near ninety in the Panhandle.
The Bryan city commission bans use of firecrackers and explosives in the business area during the holidays. Police will arrest violators without prior warning. Parents warned to warn children and avoid legal trouble as complaints from shoppers and merchants prompted the action at a Tuesday adjourned meeting.
Rotary members at the New York Cafe hosted a noon Christmas program led by Prof. D H Reid. Santa distributed gifts, Dr E P Humbert spoke on Rotary benefits, noting humanization and civic service as core outcomes. guests included Herbert St John and Robert Fechner with other visitors.
Governor elect James V. Allred visited President Roosevelt in Washington to discuss general matters and Texas cooperation in the New Deal. He said oil and housing issues were not discussed and noted talks with a Federal Housing Administration attorney on legislation to empower Texas investment houses to participate in housing efforts.
Saarbrucken report states Captain Arthur G. Hemsley resigns as chief of the Saar civil police and will not return to the post even if reinstated. In Rome Premier Mussolini warns over 1000 Italian troops departing for Saar basin duty to uphold army tradition and conduct.
Directors authorize buying 9 373 acres across Lubbock Wichita Falls Mexia and Nacogdoches to settle 600 families. Largest tract 4 102 acres at 25 an acre for 400 families at Lubbock. Budgets set 1 500 000 for January and six months for Woodlake Trinity county.
Hull reports Mrs. Ethel Lillie Major aged 42 mother of two was hanged today becoming the first woman executed in Rowland in 80 years.
In Marfa on December 19 a unique project has students refurbishing worn desks. Lacking funds for new equipment, pupils sand, stain, varnish, and repair marks and initials on the desks themselves.
American business leaders at a White Sulphur Springs convention pledge to cooperate with the government in fighting extreme legislation. The Roosevelt administration is not named. A recovery plan is being developed but not yet announced.
Zion Lutheran Church in Kurten hosts a children's Christmas Eve program on December 24 at 7 pm with all carols sung by children. Helen and Mildred Klintworth sing Silent Night. The story is told by the children. Pastor H E Spitzenfeil gives a brief address. Gifts are distributed and offerings go to the Lutheran Orphans Home in New Orleans. Services follow on Sunday at 10 am in English and on Christmas Day at 10 am in German and English.
The William Scott chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet with Mrs. W. S. Howell Thursday, Dec. 20, at 4 o'clock. All members are urged to attend.
London reports the three governments American British and Japanese failed to agree on a successor to the 1922 Washington naval pact. England and the United States refused full equality to Japan prompting adjournment with a shared statement favoring continued naval limitation and reductions though no date was set.
Tokyo December 19 The Japanese privy council the empires highest consultative body unanimously advised Emperor Hirohito to abrogate the Washington treaty of 1922. The recommendation followed a committee report and brief deliberations in the imperial palace seen by many leaders as a major step since the great war.
Dee Burns 19 perished after a pine lighter used for illumination ignited her clothing. The blaze occurred Tuesday near Cushing, killing 8 year old Able Rawlinson who lived nearby.
Navy Secretary Swanson said the navy will be kept afloat as American plans for fleet construction continue after Japan denounced the naval treaty. He stated the treaty remains effective for two years and America will do what is necessary for proper defense.
Two gunmen robbed L T Murphy a Lufkin businessman on Main Street Tuesday and escaped with 260 dollars. They forced the victim to surrender the money at pistol point and fled in an automobile.
Miss Mary Jane Reed rural schools superintendent in Leon county met in Bryan with Mrs. R. K. Fletcher rural school librarian to arrange assistance for cataloging a new rural school library being organized in Centerville.
Workers in the Bryan branch of Santa Claus Inc have nearly finished preparing hundreds of toys for distribution to more than a thousand county relief lists. The American Legion Auxiliary and relief carpenters prepared and repaired items, with Morris Schulman allowing children to trade toys for admission to theaters.
President Roosevelt announced readiness to loan federal funds to cities for municipal power plant construction if investigations show public power cheaper than private companies. The Navy seeks to determine whether building its own power plants is cheaper than private purchases. He plans to present his legislative program to Congress without a prior national radio address.
The 1934 Stephen F. Austin high school Broncos regional football champions will be entertained at 7 30 tonight at Sue Haswell Memorial Park with a barbecue hosted by the B Association formed by former athletes. The BYA operation trophy for the top tackler and the Bullock Akin trophy for the best blocker will be presented, with other awards likely announced at the upcoming pep squad banquet Friday evening.

In San Angelo on December 19, Dee and Nelson Basham of the Spade Ranch collected 5000 dead rattlesnakes over 14 months. They earned 10 cents per snake from ranch owners for snakes found on their land, turning a years long effort into $500.
