Friday afternoon and evening Santa Claus will parade through Bryan streets drawing hundreds from the trade territory. Bryan residents should greet visitors with a strong local showing to create a good impression for the city as the annual event draws shoppers and sightseers.
Mrs Jas H Webb, spending December in Jacksonville, Miss., writes Bryan friends about a delightful visit with her daughter Mrs J Allen Myers Jr. She plans to spend Christmas week in Yazoo City with Mr and Mrs John Sharp Williams and their debutante daughter Pauline. J A Jeffries, manager of the New Dixie theatre, has recovered from appendicitis and returned to work.
Ernest Williams aged 27 was shot and fatally wounded yesterday near Kirbyville when a gun in the hands of his companion Fear Leonard discharged during an attempt to drive off a wild dog attacking a squirrel. Williams walked home a mile before dying. Justice of the Peace J. S. Booker ruled the shooting accidental with no blame on Leonard.
A gift of 200 dollars from the Woman's Missionary Society of the First Methodist church was announced at the board of stewards meeting for a new recreational building on church property. The report included district meeting notes and a tentative quota for next year's conference contribution.
President Roosevelt meets in Washington for a late conference to map a program eliminating war profits. He re appoints General Douglas MacArthur as army chief of staff through the coming congress and to aid war profits legislation. Bernard Baruch and General Hugh S Johnson join the talks to frame permanent measures now that no war danger exists.
Fire swept through Presidio's business district destroying two stores a flour mill a cafe and three other buildings. The origin is unknown and losses are estimated at $40000.
The League of Nations Chaco advisory committee adjourned until December 26 to await Paraguay’s response to the peace plan ending jungle hostilities. A committee was appointed to ask Paraguay to notify the League promptly whether the plan is accepted.
Licenses for automobiles farm trucks and commercial trucks were received by Tax Collector Guy Harris Wednesday morning with passenger car licenses starting at 112551 through 116350. A Texas prison system representative said about 50000 had been invested in the license tag plant and that this sum has already been surpassed by sales to date.
Three Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees were fatally burned when fire destroyed three barracks near Norris dam Tennessee. About 200 men were left without shelter as cold weather closed in.
The State board of control urged sterilization of the insane as the only known method to prevent hereditary insanity. It recommended the plan be studied for merit and practical legal application by the legislature.
Edge School announces honor roll members across grades from first to ninth. Names include Max Wayne Rychlik Olan Murphy L W Farrow Mary Beth Cross Kathleen Elliott Billie June Leighman Margaret Milkulee Mae Aline Matejak Edith Mae Wilson in first grade along with many others through ninth grade Fred B Wilson Lola Schulz. Faculty includes A C Dowell principal Eunice Mae Hill and Maurine Yancey.
Memorial services were held this morning at 8 15 o'clock in St Josephs Catholic church in memory of the seventh anniversary of the death of Father Peter Litwora. Father T J Valenta presided with assistance from Rt Rev J B Gleissner.
Jesse Jones, chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, challenged New York bankers to create a 50 million dollar Federal Aid Corporation to help thaw the mortgage crisis. He said the RFC has sought national bankers and business leaders to back rebuilding mortgage institutions but action has been slow.
A daughter named Martha Sue Rawlins was born Monday at St. Joseph's hospital in Houston to Mr. and Mrs. Roderick Rawlins. Both mother and baby are doing well. Mrs. Rawlins, the younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Astin, is well loved by Bryan friends who send congratulations and best wishes.
Arlington Downs founder W. T. Waggoner, aged 82, a famed Texas cattle baron and longtime wealthiest Texan, died in Fort Worth Tuesday night after a paralytic stroke Sunday. Dr. Hodges McKnight said he had grown steadily weaker since the stroke.
Tulsa December 12 Sheriff Charlee Price said he is seeking another person connected to the deaths of John Gorrell and Sidney Born Jr. Price believes Born was murdered and ties the suspect to the Gorrell death. He rejects the suicide theory and notes unexplained features in both cases.
Bryan Rotary club members at noon heard a program of music and readings and discussed Is Communism Inevitable with Dr. E B Reynolds and Coulter Hoppess presenting reviews of December Rotarian articles. A new instrument the Uka Lyn was introduced by Fish Sam D Hinton. The club considered a float for the Santa Claus parade and Rotary events with A and M College to host Thursday at Houston Etany club.
Santa Claus arrives in Bryan on a red green and silver float parade through Main and Bryan streets north of 28th. Clowns dwarfs and story book characters will give candies as Bryan merchants distribute souvenirs. many local firms and organizations join in with elaborate floats and decor. The parade and regional football game between the Bryan Broncos and a Corsicana orphanage eleven draw a large crowd despite the busy afternoon.
Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce directors and local citizens met with Dr. Hi V Gieb and Dr A C Scott Jr to discuss adding a 15 million dollar control clause to the Brazos Conservation and Reclamation project. The group noted no action and planned to bring the proposal to the Brazos district committee as taxes redirected to a 50.6 million dollar PWA loan may affect funding.
County Attorney Oak McKenzie addressed the Allen Academy cadet corps on service to city state and nation. He referenced President Roosevelt's call to aid in combating crime as part of his talk. The Allen Academy National Honor Society initiated new members during the assembly period with costumes and staged ceremonies.
David Eichelberger, former A. and M. College student from Waco, was shot and killed Tuesday night. Funeral services will be held in Waco Thursday afternoon. He led student offices at A. and M. and headed the Ross Volunteers in 1933 before service at Kelly Field and Barksdale Field in Shreveport La.
Cadet Charles Fridge, 24, died when a Kelly Field bomber crashed 18 miles northeast of Boerne during a San Antonio to Dallas flight. Cadet Anthony Eubanks of Corpus Christi parachuted to safety after one engine failed.
East Texas shows partly cloudy skies and warmer temperatures tonight with Thursday bringing increasing cloudiness and a chance of unsettled weather in the south and warmer conditions in the east. West Texas starts fair in the north, then cloudier in the south with warmer southeast winds tonight and Thursday unsettled, partly cloudy.
Charles G. Dawes, now vice president under Coolidge, told Chicago traders that June could mark the end of the market gloom and the start of a broad business revival. He said the bank moratorium had damaged confidence but a delayed rush for goods would begin soon, based on a survey.
An east bound Denver Rio Grande Western train struck a boulder near Nigger Hill and plunged the locomotive into the Colorado River. Engineer Young and Fi McDougald died, the baggage car and a coach were wrecked, but all 40 passengers escaped injury.
Mrs. J. T. Hanway and daughter Mrs. M. L. Parker travel to Houston to attend the funeral of their friend Mrs. T. Jones who died Monday. Services were held this morning at 10 30 o clock.
