Thousands of Wild Horses Roam West. States Pay to Take Them
Montana studies show about 400 000 wild horses roam the state with thousands more in adjoining areas. Ranchers lose pasturage to these herds while Indians resist selling horses. Wild stallions attack remudas of tame horses, and encounters with wolves and mountain lions are common. Histories trace these horses to Spanish Conquistadors and early explorer breeds with Arabian influence shaping the wild stock.
