Grady Murray, recent Lon Morris College graduate, plans to enter A and M College soon and is visiting Y. H. Park at the Methodist parsonage in Bryan. Mesdames Kaplan, Toys, and Misses Maniloff and Kaplans with Beatrice Oednberg journeyed to Hillsboro to escort Maniloff home after hosting her sister Mrs. Toys. Jiggs Maniloff and his father motored to Houston with M A Farber of New York on a business trip. Mrs. Joe Luza underwent surgery at a local hospital and is recovering.
Dr. F. L. Thomas reports the flea hopper has caused substantial cotton damage in Calhoun and Jackson counties. While those fields recover, young boll worms attack fruit on still-growing plants. Leaf worm moths are common along the coast, but no injury was seen across large areas of South Texas.
Moderate week with a high of 97 degrees on Friday and a low of 68 on Tuesday. Rainfall totaled 0.4 inches Sunday as temperatures eased through the period.
In Brazos county a tight second primary featured Clyde Goen and Jess Conlee racing for county clerk with Goen taking the nomination by 93 votes after rural precincts flipped the result. Other races included Mrs. Neeley winning county superintendent by 20 votes and Charles Gainer securing the state senate nomination with strong College Station support.
Mrs. Miriam A. Ferguson diminished the gap with Governor R. S. Sterling in early returns from the Texas Democratic gubernatorial contest as the state election bureau compiled results Tuesday night. Ferguson led Sterling 475,735 to 473,836 with eight counties reporting. gains fluctuated as the count continued. County conventions are set for Saturday and the state convention in Lubbock on September 12 to finalize the party choice.
Reverend Jno L Whorton, pastor of the First Baptist Church, resigns to return to the First Church at Longview where he served five years before moving to Bryan two years ago.
Fort Worth report notes the Farm Industrial Unit of the Texas prison system at Sugar Land has ramped up food preservation. Packing house and cannery have stored large quantities of beef pork lard and other provisions between June 22 and August 1. Total figures include thousands of pounds of meat and oil with several items still in progress.
Supt H L Durham spoke at the Bryan Federation of Young People's Societies meeting at Free Will Baptist church praising community support for BFYPS and urges city funds for wholesome recreational facilities as Bryan emphasizes being a city of schools.
Reports from Albert Stone of Brenham say he defeated Senator Charles Gainer of Bryan for the 14th District state senate nomination. Unofficial count gave Stone a 3,122 lead with four boxes uncounted. Bastrop Robertson and two Burleson boxes showed Stone gaining. Partial returns suggested his eventual majority near 8,200 votes. County breakdown not fully listed.
In the Lower Rio Grande Valley only about 35,000 bales of cotton are expected to be ginned this year with roughly 25,000 already ginned. It ranks as one of the smallest crops since development began, far below the 161,000 bale record set in 1926.
After a long illness Haskell Edward Dishman died at his parents home on West 30th street. Funeral services were held at the Dishman residence with Rev. A E Walker officiating and military honors by Earl Graham Post No 159 at the city cemetery. He was 37 years old and served as a private first class in the 4th Company Infantry.
Truck drivers and deputies mass near Des Moines area for a planned confrontation with farmers over price demands. A long convoy lined up near Huxley five miles south of Ames with clubs distributed and sheriff escorts promised for trucks heading to Des Moines.
Cotton ginning in Brazos County for the 1932 crop stood far ahead of 1931 figures up to August 16, with 352 bales ginned versus 82 bales the same date last year, per the Census Bureau report.
Bryan Federation of Young People's Societies outlines a Sunday program at First Baptist with eight musical numbers planned. Each group adds a special selection and additional congregational songs are planned. A follow up meeting with city leaders will seek better youth recreational facilities. Heber Stewart presides.
The Texas State Highway Commission announces road contracts estimated at about 10 million dollars on September 18 19 to improve 69 miles across 84 counties. In Brazos County 6 miles of paving on No 6 and 4 miles of grading and drainage below College plus concrete on No 21 from Kurten to the Navasota river and the west section from Bryan to the Brazos bottoms. Total 19.9 miles paved and 4.4 miles graded. Work to start early October. Other projects include 3.1 miles of grading on No 21 west of Brazos River and 15.7 miles of pavement and reconstruction on No 21 from Madisonville to the Trinity River.
Mrs A B McSwain of Wellborn was cut on the head and shaken up after a side swipe on the College road near Union Hill Sunday night. Her husband received minor bruises. W A Little and family of College Park escaped injury as their car was only lightly damaged while the McSwains’ vehicle was heavily damaged.
Work began Monday on a new concrete drive linking Bryan city to the cemetery. The project will connect with the highway, lead into the cemetery, and be followed by gravel paving.
Bryan boys and girls prepare for the new academic year as the fall season nears September 1 and families plan trips to colleges and universities. Shop windows showcase fall toys while wardrobes shed summer colors and trunks and bags are readied for departures to campuses across the nation.
Brazos county farmers are invited to a fruit and vegetable grading and standardization school in Navasota on Thursday September 1. The event is hosted by the Navasota and Grimes County Chamber of Commerce the Extension Service of A and M College and the East Texas Chamber of Commerce with talks by leaders from the Chamber of Commerce Extension Service and State Fair followed by round table discussions.
Johnnie Wiggin and Beatrice Townsend both of Burleson county file intent to marry with County Clerk Jess B. McGee. Sam Lanza and Pearline Emola of Brazos county also file intent to marry with the same official.
Rev. John L. Whorton resigns as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bryan effective September 15 to accept the Longview post. During two years in Bryan he guided growth with 160 additions and strengthened church activities. Previously he led Longview’s First Baptist Church for five years and is highly regarded in civic and educational life.
W. R. McCullough of the Bryan and Brazos County Chamber of Commerce reports details for a Southwestern Model Airplane Contest tied to the State Fair of Texas in October. The event is non commercial, aims to stimulate interest in aviation, offers several prizes, and winners will be named champions of the Southwest. Information and entry blanks are available from Mr. McCullough.
St L Nachman Red Cross officials announce final summer life saving class starts Thursday at 5 at the Country Club pool. Open to juniors up to 12 and seniors 17 plus, three free slots. Recorder notes include test scores for Hearn Sanders Nunn Orth and others, with 29 seniors and 45 juniors nationwide in Brazos County to date.
Two Bryan and five College Station students were named among the forty eight graduates by Texas A and M College at the close of the summer session. Degrees awarded included one doctor of veterinary medicine, seventeen master of science, thirty bachelor of science and one bachelor of arts. Awards occurred as the summer session ended.
