In a letter to the editor readers decry new school reforms arguing that pupils lose discipline and intellectual rigor. They claim today’s children lack sufficient training in the Three R's and classical languages while older residents and some educators push back against progressive trends.
Rev and Mrs C E Bullock of oe were in Bryan today on business. Mrs J H Webb returns Thursday from visits with her daughters in Birmingham and Yazoo City. Miss Velma Moore hosts Misses Florence and Cutie Satterwhite of Crockett. Mr and Mrs Charley Hall of oe left for home after visiting T P Hall family Steep Hollow. Mrs John K Parker visiting Houston with sister Mrs Frank W Womack.
Bryan was chosen as the permanent meeting place for the Retail Merchants Association secretaries of the Central Texas district. A Bryan group representing about twenty counties including Harris, Travis, Walker, Williamson, Brazos and others elected officers. The group will meet quarterly on specified windows and Mrs. A. C. Bowden of Marlin was elected executive secretary. Arthur H. Hert of Austin was elected assistant secretary and treasurer.
Steele McDonald son of County Superintendent Mrs D J McDonald installs one of the new sanitary pit toilets at the old Prospect home. The demonstration aims to teach rural residents with County Agent C L Benson Mrs J R Stewart and Johnnie Easters of the vicinity Mr Maley of Reliance and other county club members in attendance.
In Berlin the government refused to bow to political pressure after death sentences were handed to five Fascists for political murder. Hitler assured the condemned men he would secure freedom or honor, but a government spokesman said leniency would be seen as yielding to Nazi pressure and that pardons would be decided on justice alone.
A two inch weekly rain pushes Nolan County to a yearly total of 59.79 inches, a record, with no wind or hail damage. Feed crops cotton and grass are abundant, with cotton yields around one half to three quarters of a bale per acre. A record 552,706 cans of vegetables and 194,000 jars of fruits were produced, and 417 canning cookers plus 262 sealers sold. Sweetwater area sent 125 cars of grass fed cattle to California, and winter plans include feeding 2 to 50 cattle per farmer, plus a 4,500 head local feedlot and plans for a 50,000 to 75,000 sheep feeding plant.
County Judge A S McSwain received a letter from D K Martin of the State Highway Commission stating the commission ordered paving of the west end of Highway 21 from Bryan to the Brazos River with concrete Plans are being drawn for the Bryan to Little Brazos stretch to be laid this year The dump between the two rivers will be gravelled and concrete laid later
Bryan city directory will be compiled as part of a push to elevate Bryan into cities with citizen directories. C of C directors advised residents to seek local work for Aggies, and committees reported on labor needs for students, housing arrangements, and a city directory election matter. The College will allow students employed in Bryan to reside in town while continuing on page 5.
State Commissioner of Agriculture McDonald reported a survey of the hurricane area west of Houston on August 13 found more than 45 percent of the early rice crop destroyed. Late crop damage was slight and no money damage estimate could be given.
The Texas A and M College board let a contract for a new administration building to Standard Construction Company of Houston at about 350000 dollars. Three new structures including animal industries building and veterinary hospital with a steam and water tunnel contract total near 750000 dollars. The administration building will be east of the current agricultural building and work will start promptly.
A blaze around 2 pm totally destroyed the residence of D W Foster on West 25th Street. Occupants Addie Broadway and Raymond Hotaling lost their furnishings. Neighbor Leonard Wheeless’s home was badly scorched. insurance loss figures were not released.
Work began today on a new entrance to the city cemetery. A concrete drive will extend from the highway into the cemetery, followed by a gravel drive. The vicinity around the entrance will be beautified with plantings of flowers and shrubs to ensure easy access in all weathers.
An error listed the event as a joint Brazos Burleson teachers institute to be held in Bryan on September 8 and 9. County superintendent Mrs. D. J. McDonald says Burleson authorities withdrew, so only Brazos County teachers will attend.
B L Price of Waco has accepted a position as teacher of English in Allen Academy for the coming year. He is Baylor AB degree 1927 honor graduate, studied at Harvard 1927 28, worked in New York, studied French in Paris, and earned a Masters with honors at Baylor in August after post graduate work.
Temperatures moderated last week versus the prior week with a high of 97 degrees reached last Tuesday and a low of 70 degrees noted Sunday night. Rainfall for the week totaled .59 inches. Temperatures were as follows.
Fire from an overheated flue spread from Winters dry cleaning shop to Tony Wood yard store on Saturday night about 7:30. Slight ceiling damage at Woodyard store and smoke damage noted at Marwill Winters Woodyard establishments.
New display windows and a side entrance are planned for Eugene Edge and Son's store. The rear 25th street side will host the enhancements to showcase stock to passersby and provide convenient shopper access.
County Attorney Oak McKenzie said an inquiry into possible illegal voting in the recent primary in Ruan and Brazos counties will precede the August 7 second primary. He cites mismatches between votes cast and poll taxes paid, estimating about 400 unaccounted votes possibly illegally cast. Affidavits at polling places would require nons payers to swear eligibility, with forms ready after a meeting with Democratic chair W. S. Higgs for grand jury review.
Roy Caldwell, a Black man, drove onto Highway No. 6 north of Bryan and was hit by a truck driven by Alonzo Blankenship, another Black man. Both vehicles veered into a ditch with the truck on top of the car. Caldwell escaped with only a few bruises while the auto was a total loss.

Rev. John L. Whorton, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bryan, has been unanimously called to the pastorate of the First Baptist Church at Longview where he previously served. The call was extended last Sunday and Rev. Whorton has not yet decided.
LAREDO Aug 23 A quarantine against pink root in onion plants and sets grown and shipped in South Texas will take effect for the coming planting season. J M Del Curto head of the horticultural quarantines division announced that recent complaints from North Texas and other states cited plants failing to grow due to pink root. The rules, drafted by J E McDonald Texas agriculture commissioner, cover many counties including LaSalle, McMullen, Atascosa, Frio, Dimmit, Zavala, Maverick, Kinney, Webb, Hidalgo, Cameron, Medina, Zapata, Duval, Jim Hogg, Willacy, Nueces, San Patricio and Kleberg. All onion plants must be inspected in the field before sale or shipment. if infection is under 10 percent a certificate of inspection is issued.
Group No 5 of the Woman's Missionary Society of the First Methodist Church met Monday night with Miss Verna Taylor. Miss Hettie Edge led the program on Idol atry with all present joining in the discussion. Refreshments followed and a social session concluded the gathering.
Washington reports a five percent drop in cattle fed for market in the corn belt as of August 1 from a year earlier and a 14 percent rise east of the Mississippi. Slaughter inspected in the first seven months reached 4,386,000 head, down 4.9 percent from last year and the lowest for the period since 1921, while farm cattle numbers rise since 1928. If year end slaughter remains light, cows on farms at the start of 1933 may be the largest on record.

Three hundred Nebraska farmers tried to blockade the Sioux City market in Emerson. They separated the cattle cars but did not free any cattle. Train crew escaped by ruse, moved the stock to Nacora, then returned to Sioux City. farmers departed after the crew left.
Washington August 23. The Census Bureau reports that ginners have processed 251,183 running bales of cotton from this year's growth up to August 16, including 3,617 round bales counted as half bales and excluding liters. Texas contributed 241,096 bales.
Tuesday morning 88 residents of Bryan had cast their vote for the run-off primary while away from the city or who planned to be away on election day.
Rev. E. C. Morris tenders resignation as pastor of the Free Baptist church with the resignation to take effect November 1. He and Mrs. Morris have won many friends in Bryan across denominations during their stay, and their departure will be deeply regretted. His future plans are not yet decided.
NACOGDOCHES Aug 23. The jail inmate charged with robbing County Judge Shofner last week is identified by fingerprints as Melvin Powell, a convict who escaped from a state prison farm during the recent hurricane. Powell, serving a 12 year Houston burglary sentence, was among those released to save lives and seized the opportunity to flee.
Aug 23 report says the first break in the Iowa farmers blockade occurred when milk and cream hours were lifted by pickets. Clifton W. Lavery of Logan Iowa announced milk and cream would be passed by as talks start between farmers milk distributors of Omaha and Council Bluffs. Livestock and grain trucks would remain halted.
Texas A and M College awarded contracts over the weekend for major building and utilities projects totaling about $400,000. H E Warttinger of Austin won the animal industries building bid about $200,000, Heneger and Chambers of Dallas secured the veterinary hospital and stable unit, and Kirkwood Wharton and Lee of San Antonio took the steam and water line tunnel. The projects will be located southeast of the livestock judging pavilion and north of the chemistry building, with work starting promptly and over 200 contractors and others in attendance.
Bryanite Bill Stadachene was arrested Monday afternoon by Deputy Sheriff C. L. Baker and jailed on a charge of assault with intent to commit murder after a restaurant argument on North Bryan avenue. He allegedly returned to the Brogdon tire shop, retrieved a pistol, and fired at Roy Thurman who was uninjured. Stadachene posted bond and will face a preliminary hearing before Justice J. T. McGee today or tomorrow.
