Governors of Three States Invited to Inspect Highway

Governors of Colorado New Mexico and Texas have been invited by the Colorado Gulf Highway Association president to join the executive committee on an official inspection tour of the highway in their states. Giant dirigible ZR 2 driven off course by storm

Putnam Aug 24. The ZR 2 airship, on a trial trip, was blown off course by a fierce storm and later exploded over Hull’s city hall area. Reports say three parachutes departed, two crewmen died, several injured, and five saved from a crew of forty nine. Six American officers aboard.

First Shipment of Food Reaches Russian Famine Areas

The American Relief Administration reported the first food delivery for famine districts in Russia. One thousand tons of balanced rations left Riga for the Petrograd district and 2500 tons for the Moscow district. Thirty staffers will depart Riga for Moscow Volga Black Sea and Petrograd regions as relief efforts expand across the Polish frontier.

Denver Rio Grande Wreck Kills Engineer Armstrong

A Denver and Rio Grande westbound train 1 derailed about thirteen miles east of Grand Junction. One man, engineer Douglas Armstrong, was killed and twenty five passengers were injured according to early reports received.

Moonshiner Receives Suspended Sentence and Fine

A. P. Markwood, a self confessed moonshiner, was given a suspended one year term in the penitentiary after a Breckenridge district court verdict. A jury awarded him about 70 dollars in fines and costs. He testified hard times drove him to distilling to support his wife and six children. His wife corroborated the claim. He had come from Necessity and surrendered after a fellow moonshiner was arrested.

Grass Fire Alerts Fire Department Near Oil Mill

About one o'clock a fire alarm summoned the fire department to J. E. Ford's residence at Red Top and Henry streets near the oil mill. It proved to be only grass burning but thick smoke alarmed passersby who reported the blaze. No damage resulted.

Saladiner Poisoning Machine Demonstrations Planned

P. S. Mangum sales manager for the Saladiner Poisoning Machine Company and L. G. Williams depart by autos for Dallas to demonstrate the machine to the Chamber of Commerce and Texas Farm Bureau. First stop Waco, then Waxahachie for tests invited by T. B. Truitt with Ellis county agents assisting. Demonstrations in Brazos bottom last week prompted belief inventor J. M. Saladiner solved the poisoning problem.

Smetana Rainstorm Briefly Affects County Locale

Report describes a brief wind and rain storm Tuesday afternoon from the southwest lasting about twenty minutes. The storm swept a four to five mile area into Brazos bottom, bringing heavy rain that cooled the heat but did little to aid crops. Bryan saw only a light sprinkle.

Central Methodist Elders Meet in Fort Worth

Presiding elders of the Central Texas Conference of Southern Methodists met at First Methodist church in Fort Worth to plan the stewardship program and complete plans for the third portion of the Centenary pledges from three years ago. Educational measure passes as House delays action

In Austin on Aug 24 the Senate House approved the revised conference report by 19 to 4 with postponement of final action in the House. Beasley signaled willingness to back further reductions, as liberals floated study time for the bill. The amended conference report cuts education funding by about 169,848 dollars from the prior bill, with detailed reductions across the University of Texas budget, A and M College publicity, and several normal and college line items.

One hundred thousand dollars in gold coin found in the baggage of Felice Haddad a wealthy Venezuelan who arrived Monday on the steamship Caracas from Venezuela. Inspectors debated whether the visitor should declare the gold with others recalling a similar case years ago.
