Harrell seeks tariff duty on crude oil amid oil monopoly claims
In Washington on August 16 Senator Harrell Republican of Oklahoma urged a tariff on crude petroleum as protection for indepen dent producers against monopolies led by Standard and Doheny and others. He alleged that Standard and Indiana groups control key stocks and operations, driving prices down through forced sales while Mexico production is monopolized. A tariff would raise revenue and shield independents while a separate tariff amendment adds free zones at American ports for crude materials to be converted before shipment.
