J T McGer addresses rumors about a $100 monthly pension by explaining his retired Postal Service allowance is $58.89. He describes the fund as employee contributed, not tax funded, and not a public charge, comparing it to a private old age pension plan.
Abbot JT Bryan and Dohn Strickland sons of Mr and Mrs C P Strickland of Alvin arrived for a week long visit with Carlton Ely Jr at 2415 Baker Avenue. Mrs Florence Birdwell and companions spent the weekend with her son Capt M J Birdwell at the C C camp between Rusk and Palestine, with Sunday visiting day noted. Mrs H J Durham hosts young women who have accepted positions at A and M College for the term, including Mrs Lucile Roland Alma Croft Miss Mary Torne and Miss Catherine Palmer.
Directors of the Brazos River Conservation and Reclamation district meet in Waco to discuss plans tied to a proposed 50 million dollar government expenditure for river improvements. Attending are Congressmen Cross and Buchanan and John Norris, with President Lewis Mims noting Brazos’ favored spot among six Texas rivers for a broad waterway program including navigation and hydroelectric development.
Ed McGrudder, a Black farmer in the Navasota bottoms on Horace Dansby’s land, shows four acres of yams and other vegetables. He notes eight children help work the farm and last week paid a long grocery bill with watermelons sold in the area.
Dr. L. B. Elrod pastor of the First Methodist church will depart Monday for Fort Davis in the Davis Mountains to spend about ten days. He will be away for one Sunday August 19 and has arranged the church services for that day. In the morning Rev. Robert L. Jackson of College Station will preach and in the evening Dr. Thomas Gordon Watts of the First Presbyterian church will fill the pulpit.
County Clerk Clyde Goen received ballots to permit absentee voting. Residents wanting ballots or absent on August 25 may vote through Wednesday August 22. A record absentee vote was cast in the first primary and heavy turnout is expected for the runoff election.
Miss Sarah C. Orth of College Station chairing the Brazos County American Red Cross Life Saving and Swimming group has completed another senior life saving course at the A and M College pool. She applied to the Midwestern Branch in St Louis for official registration of nine students and their grades.
In Ashland Mississippi mobs seized two Black men from officials and hanged them from a tree near Michigan City in vengeance for an earlier incident. The victims named are Robert Jones and Smith Honey, who faced trial over a serious case involving Dennis Gillispie from over a year ago.
Lions Club luncheon highlights Bryan Boy Scouts camp plans as 10 day outing begins August 20 at 10 o clock. Scouts and leaders depart for camp August 20 and return August 30 with Court of Honor games crafts pioneering and outdoor activity. J Coulter Smith notes funds and preparations.
James A. Patterson, a prison guard, was sentenced to 15 years after pleading guilty to aiding Raymond Hamilton and two other condemned men in July 22 escape from the state penitentiary. He admitted smuggling three pistols inside the prison walls. the trial lasted 55 minutes with limited prosecution evidence and no defense testimony.

Bryan and College residents use two new roads adding access to Campus and College Park. Commissioner Guy F Boyett opened them and plans call for graveling after the roads settle. The Boyett estate and late WF Boyett contributed right of way.
Centerville August report on the admitted murder and arson plot by Mrs. Charles Salsberry and Ibb Bass 22 as they pleaded guilty in the killing of her husband. Judge Adkisson ordered them held for the grand jury without bond. The confession detailed a cold blooded plan to “get rid” of the husband after a year plus of illicit romance.
Brazos county commissioners at their monthly session fixed Monday August 27 at 9 am for a public hearing on the current fiscal year budget. After adoption the county tax rate will be set. They appropriated 500 for indigent hospitalization matching the city and added funds to be provided by Good Cheer.
Three negro boys accused of petty theft and burglary were paroled Monday to John K. Carr and will be employed in picking cotton on his plantation. A fourth member did not appear in court.
Rudy Guzeman, linked to an alleged warehouse burglary attempt at Gordon Sewell Co, was moved from Houston Monday by Sheriff J H Reed and Constable Horace Reed after Houston police took him into custody.
Assistant Secretary Chapman, after a West tour, says rising prices and crop reduction payments, plus drought relief funds, will carry Western farmers through the crisis. He notes conditions are improving since four months ago and that many farmers rely on crop reduction checks and the AAA program.
Members of the American Legion Brazos County fair board met Monday to outline this sixth annual Free Fair schedule. The event runs from 6 pm Wednesday November 7 to Armistice Day dance Saturday night, with the Bill Hames carnival providing free acts nightly and a Bryan Community Band opening program. Friday Rural Schools Day features attendance based prizes, and a Saturday night negro choir contest plus a big Armistice Day dance. A barbecue for division chairs and school principals will be held in September with date to be announced.
All Bryan public schools will open for registration and the start of regular work on Monday September 10. S. M. Brown announced the date. Teachers will assemble for meetings on Saturday September 8. Travis Bowie and Stephen F. Austin teachers convene at the high school, while the two Negro schools meet at Kemp.
Raymond Phelps, unable to walk, crawled to the summit of Pikes Peak Friday on hands and knees taking thirteen hours. He started with friends William Townley Bill Rapp and Ralph Teeters at about 4 p.m. Thursday and reached the 14,000 foot peak at 7 a.m. Friday amid rain. The rancher then descended by cog train.

The county commissioners court held its regular monthly meeting on Monday with only routine business on the docket.
Memphis firefighters saved a family dog during a city outskirts blaze. With only a 50 gallon tank, they kept a water stream on the frightened animal as walls collapsed, and after the fire eased the dog emerged unharmed from beneath the burning building.
Brazos County officials report cattle will still be bought for slaughter at Texas A and M College and processed in Bryan cannery. Shipments to other areas are halted due to congestion. 500 to 600 cattle weekly will be purchased for the pen and cannery until further orders.
Brazos county relief rolls send many men and women to local cotton fields. Labor demands are matched with squads assigned to farmers. Names are forwarded to employers and nonreporting workers will be removed from relief lists. The relief bureau continues to place workers for house service and other labor needs.

Bryan lowers its tax rate to 1.60 per 100 of value for all including schools. The levy rests on a 4,502,038 valuation, about 40 percent of appraised value, about 50,000 higher than last year due to new property. The reduction comes from retiring 25,000 of long term bonds and refunding 22,000 of a 47,000 issue at about 4 percent to save interest. Taxpayers showed little turnout at a budget hearing.
Announcement was made at First Baptist church of the exchange of pulpits on Sunday next. Dr W H Andrew of Bryan church and Dr John L Whorton of First Baptist Longview will preach in the city services. Whorton, former Bryan pastor, will speak in morning and evening in this city. Andrew will preach at Longview First Baptist Church.
West 27th street residents watched hoboes tumble from box cars along the Missouri Pacific right of way Tuesday. Trainmen tossed stink bombs into occupied cars in an effort to dislodge the uninvited passengers.
E. H. Astin and George G. Chance will attend the Wednesday meeting in Waco to discuss plans for complying with a proposed government expenditure of 50 million dollars for river improvement. Jno. W. Lawrence will not attend. The program features navigation irrigation soil erosion prevention flood control reforestation and hydro electric power development.
The Bryan Woman's Club issued its 1934 35 yearbook outlining the club year from October 5 to April 8 1935. It lists officers including president Mrs F L Henderson and vice presidents Mrs J Webb Howell and Mrs M Frances along with committee reports and program notes.
