Bryant will travel Thursday to Temple for talks with managers from eight nearby J C Penney stores about expanding each store's trade territory. Ina Harrison daughter of Mr and Mrs J C Harrison and Stephen F Austin high school graduate has joined a Dallas law firm office. Mr and Mrs J C Culpepper of Cameron are visiting and saw Mr and Mrs Mike Coleman.
The American Legion Auxiliary elected Mrs. Ed S. Martin as president at its annual officers meeting at the Legion home. Other officers include Mrs. John Patranella vice president and Mrs. Willard Chambers secretary. Delegates to the Mineral Wells state convention were named: Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Sosolik, Mrs. Chambers, Mrs. Krenek, and Mrs. Luke Patranella.
In Germany on August 7, Adolf Hitler delivered an emotional eulogy at Paul Von Hindenburg's funeral, saying the late president had "opened the door" to Nazism. The 86 year old leader was buried in a national war monument tower as thousands in uniform attended.
The Emergency Crop Loan Office of the Farm Credit Administration in Dallas says the planting allowance for forage crops in Brazos county ends August 15. Seed loan applications are accepted in Brazos county by Alia Stanford at the relief office in Bryan. Feed loans continue on a monthly basis with a minimum $25 first application and 5.5 percent interest due November 1, 1935. Mortgagees must sign a non disturbance agreement if mortgaged, barring foreclosures before January 1, 1936.
Ernest Jones was held to the grand jury by Justice J. T. McGee on murder charges in the fatal stabbing of George Walker Friday night. The case proceeds to the next session for grand jury consideration.
Jack Liner, a youth said to have sold electric fans, stamped envelopes, stamps and other stolen property to Lake Palermo, was lodged in the county jail Thursday evening. He faces felony theft in two cases and police recovered the stolen items from the Palermo store.
Resolutions approved at the Hazen County Democratic convention in Bryan call for submitting the statewide prohibition issue to voters. Delegates to the Texas Democratic state convention were chosen, with 55 named to represent the party in Galveston. The measures urge including a plank backing immediate submission of the prohibition question to the people and endorsing President Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration.
Two hundred miners were trapped at the 100-foot level of a French coal mine after 20 Polish miners protested the discharge of two comrades. The group blocked galleries cut air water and electrical connections paralyzing the mine. The trapped workers descended the shaft and were blocked by the rebels at the 1000-foot level.
Ernest Jones, a Bryan man, was charged with murder for the death of George Walker after an 11 p m Friday stabbing on the west side. Jones is held in the county jail awaiting a preliminary hearing before Justice J T McGee next week.
C Stokes of Washington DC praised a rural pastors conference attached to the agricultural short course at College Station. He urged nationwide replication of such gatherings at state agricultural colleges, noting cross denomination cooperation and rural rehabilitation potential. About 1200 attended vesper services nightly with C T Sprague of College Station singing at the final service.
Johnny Hudson of Jeanerette Louisiana, a Bryan boy manning an infield post, was spiked by an opposing runner while attempting a double play. He may miss up to three weeks but hopes to return before the season ends.
The Bryan city commission reduced the tax rate from 1.75 to 1.63 for the current year on a $4,502,038 valuation. The budget projects $212,396.50 in income and expenditures, with funds set for utilities, a $59,000 emergency reserve, cemetery land, street gravelling, and a new motorcycle officer. A public hearing is set for August 10 at city hall.
Brazos County Democratic Executive Committee members and Chairman W. S. Higgs met Thursday to check unofficial election returns. They found the Eagle’s Monday figures nearly correct, with minor changes not affecting standings, and noted no notification yet on August 25 runoff candidate placements from the state board.
William Rice 76 and Mrs M L Tyer 62, both longtime Iola residents, were married Monday shortly after noon by Justice J T McGee in the Grimes County courthouse office. The couple then returned to their Iola area home amid a warm reception from friends.
New traffic policeman Joe Howard and veteran Lee will split city routes to enforce traffic laws and promote safer driving as a cost effective choice. The initiative begins immediately to persuade motorists that compliance saves money and improves safety.
Paving of Highway No. 6 south of College and to the Grimes county line, and closing gaps north of Bryan, plus those in No. 14, are assured per W. S. Barron of the X-All Highway Association. Work on No. 6 south of College may occur this fall with other gaps possibly closed before winter. The Highway Commission Wednesday discussed a new highway from Valley Junction on No. 43 to No. 21 and ordered widening No. 2 from Brenham west. It also designated a road from No. 90 to Independence on condition the county secures Baylor University site for a state park.
Ed Ford, a Black farmhand from the Allen Farm area, is held for murder in the fatal slashing of Reuben Criss about two weeks ago. Justice J. T. McGee ordered him held to the grand jury with bond set at $500.
James Hill and Ed Mack, referred to as negro boys, were arrested Monday morning by Chief T. K. Tillis and Constable Horace Reed on burglary charges. Authorities say the pair broke into the Poriskie John Bo riskie grocery twice in one night. The juveniles have prior petty theft brushes but no other action has been taken.
W T Bennett of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration said Texas cannot ship as many cattle to southern states as hoped because many cattle are not fit for long-distance shipment. He leads a program to place about half a million drought stricken cattle in grazing lands across ten southern states, with Georgia Arkansas and Tennessee noted as important destinations.
Independence Homecoming Association announces the eleventh annual Homecoming day on Sunday August 12 at Old Independence Baptist church in Washington county. Hon Robert L Cole of Houston will be guest speaker as old settlers Baylor University and Baylor Female College alumni attend. Basket dinner with shade and ice water planned. highway improvements noted along Independence Brenham route.
A M C A Cobb administrator of the cotton reduction program defended the government plan and the Bankhead act in a Friday morning address at the Farmers Short Course held at Texas A and M College.

Brazos County Red Cross executive board met at City Hall to review July activity including 49 new and reopened cases with 38 white and 11 negro. The group reported Matagorda County as hardest hit with 11 dead and 260 homes destroyed. A $40 quota for relief was set and donations were urged at Bryan banks.
Wayne Bickerstaff 19 of Malone died after an airship piloted by E V Gaither of Houston struck a steel cable over the Brazos River near Pitts Bridge and plunged to a sand bar. Gaither sustained only bruises and cuts. The accident occurred as bathers were nearby. the cable, part of gauge equipment, was reportedly unnoticed until too late. Bickerstaff’s body was shipped to Mexia for forwarding to Malone. interment will follow there.
The Texas state game commission and federal authorities set a restricted duck and geese season for winter. North zone opens Oct 26, statewide. south zone ends Dec 30. The commission kept Friday Saturday and Sunday shooting days, resisting a two day per week limit.
Texas property owners face another year of paying the maximum ad valorem tax rate 77 cents per $100 valuation. Gov Miriam A Ferguson notes the rate will be set at the limit as auto tax board meets at the governor’s call. Taxes due Oct 1 1934 to Jan 1 1935, with accounting Sept 1 1934 to Aug 31 1985.
