San Domingo forces engage revolutionists as lines of attackers clash in ongoing action. Both sides exchange fire amid urban combat, with reports of shifting positions and mounting casualties.
From New Orleans April 6 Advices report the Magnolia levee breach closed with a large labor force building cribbing and mud box behind the levee to prevent further disaster. Sacking starts at Hyme lia plantation as center cribbing strengthens and central joints tested. Water drains from Magnolia as river level sits around 20.2 feet with oscillations between 20.1 and 20.3.
At a midnight meeting Holland workers proclaimed a general strike of all land and water transport. Rail lines stations and wharves are guarded by troops while foreign express trains run under military protection. A workman was wounded by a soldier’s revolver shot as he walked beside the rails. The strike aims at anti strike laws and wage demands and may extend to other industries. Shipping staffs trading with London and Hull stopped work in sympathy.
Indiana monuments on the Shiloh battlefield were dedicated with ceremonies in Shiloh Tennessee on April 6. Governor Durbin and staff, General Lew Wallace, U S Senator Beveridge, Assistant Secretary of War Sanger and other prominent Indiana citizens attended.
Oscar Barcliffe, engine driver in Newark, recovered physically from the Clifton Avenue collision that killed nine and injured thirty, but his mind remains altered. He raves about his engine, acts on imagined throttles and valves, and fixates on a red cloaked statue of St Michael near the hospital entrance.
Ayres April 6 Charles Moulton of Clinton attempted to kill Miss Lillian Wheeler at the railroad station by firing twice at her head. He then shot himself in the brain and died instantly. Wheeler, formerly Moulton's wife, had recently obtained a divorce and resumed her maiden name. Authorities say jealousy and despondency likely drove the incident.
Cincinnati reports the first municipal elections under a new code with officials serving two-year terms. Over 100 warrants are issued for illegal registration arrests. Huntington notes a sale of 150000 acres of timber and coal lands to state capitalists for development worth three million dollars. A London dispatch says Mrs Mabell Townsend, once with the Alcazar theatre, committed suicide on a doorstep in London.
