In Birmingham on April 7 Mrs. Susie McMillan, wife of a city policeman, gave her eight month old baby a large dose of carbolic acid and then shot herself twice in the breast. She was found by her husband who broke in. the infant lay dead and burned on the bed. Mrs McMillan sustained burns from a discharged revolver. No motive is given.
The body of Joseph I. Meehan a wealthy stockman living near Akron Colorado was found shot on a prairie close to his home. Authorities suspect ambush Friday night after a feud with local rangemen following a December pistol duel with rancher John Irwin. Meehan popular locally and threats had followed the prior clash.
President Roosevelt traveled through South Dakota delivering twelve speeches in one day from Sioux Falls to Aberdeen. He praised national prosperity and the tariff, noted many children in audiences, and highlighted individual contributions to national growth amidst cheers from crowds and support from Senators Kittredge Gambler and Representatives Martin Burke.
Ramsey Webster, a white man, quarreled with his wife in Girard, leading to Marshal Girard being speared with a knife as he arrived. Bishop, who tried to intervene, fired on Webster, wounding him fatally, while Webster killed the marshal and Bishop lies in a dangerous condition.
Kloskowski alias Chapman, a Southward saloon keeper, was hanged in Wandsworth jail after murdering three women who lived with him as wives in separate parts of London. He collapsed during the execution and claimed innocence, insisting his real name was Chapman and that he was American by birth.
Walter Hickley shot himself four times including in the head and abdomen near Milford tracks. He staggered to his feet with two sticks, waved at an express train, then collapsed. The engineer stopped the train, Hickley was taken to New Haven Hospital and expected to recover.
The Mississippi at New Orleans remains at 20.3 feet while Lake Providence shows a two foot drop due to the Hollybrook breach. Much of the water is expected to return downstream and recede before reaching New Orleans as Hymelia crevasse work continues. An inspection party, led by Admiral Walker, General Haines, and Major Black, departs New York for Colon to evaluate ongoing canal work to be carried out by the French company until transfer of property to the United States.
John Turner a colored man was lynched in Warren Arkansas Sunday night for alleged attempted assault on Mrs Neel ey a white resident near town. Turner identified by Mrs Neeley before mob action, shot not fired, coroner held inquest naming unknown parties.
In Chicago the Chicago Board of Trade sought injunctions to fix ownership of quotations for future prices of grain and other commodities. Judge Adams in the United States district court denied the petitions and condemned futures dealing.
Indiana unveiled twenty two monuments at Shiloh costing 25000 dollars to honor regiments from the state. 600 people arrived from Indianapolis aboard trains and boats for dedicatory exercises led by General Lew Wallace. Members of the Indiana commission presented the monuments to the government, with officials including Governor Durbin and Senator Beveridge in attendance. James W. Riley recited Old Glory as Confederate veterans and local residents observed the ceremony amid a strong turnout from the region.
