The Linn County Corn Growers Association held its first annual corn show at Brookfield. Winners included Ora Bennett and Roy Haley in yellow and white corn respectively with top prizes going to Ora Bennett for the silver cup and Cecil Crookshanks for the gold watch in the boys judging class. Six towns competed with Browning dominant in premiums and a community entertainment at the Lantz home concluded the evening for over twenty attendees.
A new meat market has opened offering home killed meats at a small profit with good weights. John Hatch assists the venture and invites patrons to visit. The note thanks customers for their patronage and requests continued support.
The junior class of our high school, nearly twenty students, has formed a structured division system. Division No. 1 includes Doris Harvey, Vesta Duncan, Vesta Sayers, and Ray Nickell as members.
Last Thursday through Saturday the county teachers gathered in Brookfield with Supt Joyce presenting daily programs. Although our local school did not attend, several staff will join the state teachers association in Hannibal and return with new ideas and energy.
J. H. Calhoun and J. M. Moore will take over the hardware business from John Gable who has operated the store for years. Calhoun brings long hardware experience while Moore, previously owner of the Moore Feed Barn, joins with ambition. The new firm is expected to do well.
William Campbell born February 29 1825 in West Virginia married Mary Ann Wilburn later Mattie Woodruff. He left several children across two marriages and lived in Missouri Iowa and near Winigan before settling in this city. A longtime M E C member his health declined until death at twelve oclock Saturday night. He lies in Price Cemetery awaiting resurrection. The widow and children receive community sympathy.
Mrs Emma Biswell sold her property to Mr and Mrs Atk ins who will take possession this week. The price was about 1500. The old bachelors James Osborn Dr Bartlett J Y Schrock and C M Thornton, long time lodgers, seek shelter as moving begins. Rumors hint Thornton and Schrock may marry.
Early Sunday neighbors of C. L. Godsey were awakened by a shout of Fire and learned Claud was running through Strip hollow, crying Pa’s Boy. Mother and baby are reported to be recovering well and there is hope Claud will be alright soon.
Fuller Brothers near the city will host their second sale of registered Poland China hogs at Galt on Saturday November 25. The lineup includes 34 boars and 26 sons, all prize winning quality. The brothers have rapidly built success, earning county and state premiums, including first and grand champion at Sedalia. R M Calhoun fell while fixing a stove pipe and struck his head, leaving a noticeable bump over the eye. He has handled stoves for years and suspects the mishap happened while working on one for himself. Mrs Calhoun's account remains unavailable. They reside in the M E parsonage and host friends there.
