King announces the reopening of the old meat market in the H. B. Johnson building. He pledges first class service with fresh meats oysters celery and bread, inviting customers to try the cheerful, courteous shop at affordable prices.
Rachel Susanna Mairs, born November 30 1842 in Jackson County West Virginia, died November 8 1911 at age 68 11 8 in Milan Missouri. She moved with her father to farm near Brownings in 1866 after her mother’s West Virginia death. A longtime Presbyterian member at Grantsville, she was praised as conscientious and selfless. Funeral held at Curtis residence, interment in family cemetery. She leaves four brothers J A Mairs John Bev and Joseph and a sister Mrs Thomas Curtis plus many relatives and friends.
The list honors individuals who recently joined or renewed subscriptions to the Leader-Record. Names include J. P. Pipes, J. W Crookshanks, Hiram Kenley, Cora, J. H. Dunkin, Mrs. J. R. Lantz, W.S. Neet, W. A. Smith, W. L. Patterson, G. P. Ginter, John L. Mairs, Albert Baker, J. W. P. McQuown, Wm. Warren, Mrs. Zee Tonge, J. J. Smith, J. D. Burwell, and Mrs. Harry Engle.
Notice states that hardware stock was sold to Messrs Moore and Calhoun effective January 1, 1912. It thanks Browning and surrounding area for patronage and requests all notes and accounts be settled by that date. Signed Jno. Gable.
Browning staff recounts a Missouri gathering held November 9 to 11 in Hannibal. The trip included visits to Laclede and Brookfield with educators E A Watkins and local figures. Speakers included Dr Karl Barnes Dr W C Bagley Dr Henry Sizalo and Dr C H Judd sharing views on curriculum reform and educational philosophy.
The report covers lectures by Dr. Hill, Dr. McMurry, and Dr. Barley at a Presbyterian church event in Washington DC. It notes department meetings, excursions to Mark Twain Cave and a cement factory, and praises the gathering as broad minded, constructive, and uplifting for future growth.
Presley Robinson born May 31 1857 died November 9 1911 after years of ill health. He married Miss King about 32 years ago and left four children George Golda Gertrude and Lillian. Funeral services were led by Rev W O G Potter at the family home and burial was at Jenkins cemetery with many townspeople attending.
Browning Missouri banker J J Harmon and Col L F Fife visited, with Col Turner, and bought a two year old jack from Mim Pearson for 1100 dollars. The animal stands fifteen and a half hands high and is hailed as perhaps the finest young jack in Howard County. Shipment moved Monday from Fayette to Mr Harmon.
Col Turner boasts a finer herd of brood mares in his county than in Howard. He notes the need for Howard raised big jacks to cross with local mares. J T Stocker estate is bid $1000 for a young jack at the Armstrong street fair. Harmon plans return for more quality jacks and jennets after a Clark survey failed to find suitable stock. Messrs Fife Pierce and Harmon toured Clark but found nothing to fit.
Fuller Brothers announce an auction of prize Pol and China hogs at Galt Missouri on Saturday November 25. L. E. Fuller Chas. Fuller and Ross Fuller are noted breeders with championships at county and Sedalia state fairs. Buyers from across states are invited to obtain pedigreed hogs and request a catalogue from Fuller Brothers Humphreys Missouri.
Linn County records show 17 deaths in August with causes including heart disease six, typhoid three, measles one, tuberculosis one, nervous system diseases one, respiratory diseases one, diarrhoea one, acute nephritis one, puerperal state one, and other causes one. Births total 35. Frank B. Hiller M D State Registrar.
A rapid weather shift saw a morning temperature just above seventy degrees with a warm southerly wind. By noon a cold wind from the north brought rain sleet and a gale. Temperatures fell to near zero by Sunday morning and the area resembled winter with ground ice and freezing conditions.
