The chinch bug infestation grows in Missouri with wheat and oat fields plagued by pests. Corn fields face cornflees, and farmers fear substantial losses unless controls cut in before wheat harvest. In Albany on May 8 1934 Mary M Johnson writes to the Browning Leader-Record editor Joe Nickell enclosing currency to pay her subscription. She praises the paper for keeping her in touch with old-time friends. She notes pleasant weather, blooming flowers and ripe home-grown strawberries.
The Linn County Wool Pool opened in Linneus with 20,000 pounds of wool received on day one. An efficient crew handled receiving and preparation for grading, with several workers from prior pooling duties returning to Linneus.
A Thursday gathering in Milan drew corn hog signers from across the county. Mr. Wood of the College of Agriculture and other speakers led talks on how to use land rented to Uncle Sam this summer including pasture and seeding strategies. Local attendees included H. F. Kille Carl Daniels Truman Stephenson and W. B. Arnold among others.
A Tobacco Raiser Al Brown of near Purdin made a pleasant call in the city on Saturday. He is one of Linn county’s largest tobacco growers and plans a crop larger than last year. His curing barn has been expanded to handle the season’s curing. Brown is described as a mighty good farmer and happy with his tobacco operations.

The state approved a ten million dollar bond issue for improving state institutions and easing crowded penal facilities. City voters supported the measure by a wide margin, while rural areas leaned against it as overall turnout was low. The result favored issuance about two to one.

The Love Circle met at Miss Virginia Ford’s home on May 1. A noon meal was served, 14 members answered roll call, and the program opened with the theme song Will The Circle Be Unbroken and a prayer by Mrs. Alta Smith. Winners of contests included Thelma Badger and Catherine Collins. Eleven visitors attended, and birthday presents went to Gertie Bertschman and Leone Woodall. The next meeting is set for May 15 at Mrs Elmer King’s home in Roger.
The Friendship Circle Club met at Mrs. Mont Cumbo's home at two with Old Spin ning Wheel singing. Ten members and seventeen visitors attended, new member Cathrine Blender joined, showers awarded to Hazel Gooch, Margaret Bagley, and Wacyl Smith, and Kathryn Cumbo provided music with several singers.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Reinhard have opened an implement and repair department for the International Harvester Company in the Ben Slater building. Reinhard is well known locally as former school superintendent and a successful businessman.
Miss Kathleen Rice of St Marys Ontario left teaching for a frontier life in northern Manitoba. She homesteaded a quarter section, built a cottage, prospected for minerals, and now lives on an island near Herb Lake trapping in winter and prospecting in summer.
