Ed Helms longtime manager of the Purdin Telephone Exchange dies at 69. Born May 10 1874 near Milan Missouri he married Luella Belt in 1898 and had son Orvyl who died in 1937. Survived by grandson Orvyl H Helms Jr sister Lydia Seals brother Dr E T Helms half brother Wallace Helms and many relatives. Services held January 14 1944 at Purdin Methodist Church with Rev L M Hines and Rev Jesse Slover. burial in Purdin Cemetery with local performers providing song.

Fifteen students of B. H. S. met in the commercial room on Friday to organize a needle work club. They planned to complete a hand finished tea towel with an original design for display next Friday. A prize of embroidery floss will go to the best piece. Members will bring materials for applique next week.
On January 14 1944 the Craft Club sponsored by Mrs Thurlo met in Room 2C with fifteen students present. Officers elected were President Phillip Britton Vice President Lehman Fuller Secretary and Treasure Bob Moore. Members decided each person would choose their own handwork to work on.

John William Nichols born March 20 1862 in Lake Forest Illinois died January 12 1944 at his nephew John Henry Hines home in Browning Missouri aged 81 years 9 months 22 days. He lived in Missouri since youth on a Sullivan County farm near Scottsville married Viola Atwood at 15. six children Roy Flora Wallace Anna Crose Thurman Grace Foster survive with his wife predeceasing him in 1932. Interment Fields Cemetery after services at White Oak Church Browning conducted by Rev C G Tiahrt and Rev Iva Creason with long service by Rev and Mrs Creason and Mrs Tiahrt.

The Stitch and Chatter Club met with Mrs Irene Kelly on January 7. Members worked on quilting and enjoyed a noon dinner. The business meeting opened by roll call as a pot holder project. Nine members attended due to rough roads and cold weather. Allie and Doris among others.
W B Bill Haley of Browning died early Monday January 17 1944 after a brief illness. He was a star mail route carrier from here to Winigan and is survived by his mother a daughter Reva two sisters Eva Foster and Isabel Gooch and four brothers Dan Roy Louie and others Funeral services will be Sunday January 23 at the Methodist Church conducted by Rev Gregory K Peole with interment in Jenkins cemetery.
A covered dish dinner was hosted Tuesday evening at Mrs. Ira Nevins home to honor Mrs. Hazel Peterson who will spend several months in New Orleans.
