Ken McLaughlin, a Wyoming rancher’s son, bets on Flicka the quirky mare’s foal. After Flicka injures herself, Ken seeks a path to friendship with the wild filly while his father doubts Flicka will recover. Ken remains hopeful he can tame Flicka and prove the bond between them.
Ken defies a grim order to shoot Flicka the filly and slips out at night to the pasture. He finds her near death in the stream and, in a silent, desperate effort, drags her to safety. As dawn approaches, Flicka’s life is saved by Ken’s compassion and strength.
Ken endures freezing water to cradle Flicka as a storm looms and dawn grimly breaks. Gus retrieves the gun and returns to the calf pastures while Rob and Nell tend Ken, Flicka flickers between life and death amid a night of peril. Flicka recovers as the fever fades and life seems to return.
