Convicts at Missouri Penitentiary swap stripes for blue suits
After more than seventy five years male prisoners at the Missouri Penitentiary were issued light blue woolen suits replacing stripes. About 100 of 2279 inmates still wore stripes. most will be released soon and given citizen clothing. Warden Andrae praised the reform as a fresh start for meritorious inmates. The day passed without incident, and all suits were locally made with convict labor. The change cost about $11000, with suits priced around $5 each.

Last Saturday John Fields sold a fine span of mules to Johnson and Fleming for 500 dollars. The team drew a crowd at the barn and won over fifty dollars in premiums at county fairs. The seller called the better mule the finest ever seen in Browning.
